He related to college kids at WVU just fine. The 3-3-5 like any scheme works if you have the horses, it's the Jimmy's and Joe's as they say. The issue is whether his style works with West Coast kids. We all know football is a bit different out here.

I have no problem with the scheme. I just thought it was dumb because RR knew nothing of it. That was Jeff Casteel's baby. When Casteel decided to stay at WVU, RR had English foisted on him, and then he forced English, a die-hard 4-3 guy, to run the 3-3-5. It was a catastrophe by design.

Unless he's bringing in someone who really knows the 3-3-5, I don't see it succeeding at UA, either. It would be like trying to run the Double Eagle Flex without Larry Mac Duff.

English was never retained by rich Rod. Rich Rod first hired Scott Shafer then went with Greg Robinson but your point remains that those guys weren't 3-3-5 guys either. He's trying to get Casteel from WVU since him and Holgo aren't on the same page but you never know.

Dadgum. You're right. English went to Louisville and the Bears. Sorry. I should never write off the top of my head.

One domino down, Leach to WSU. They've instantly become relevant.

Yeah... pretty good for WSU, they were going to have to overpay like hell to get a name coach, and while he'll be among the best paid coaches in the PAC-12, he is best case scernio for them bar none..

I was lukewarm about Leach landing here, but I don't like seeing him in Pullman

I like our chances of Casteel coming. Money will not be a problem from what I know. They also have players now that can play the 3-3-5 but it looks like they will be playing some 3-4.

On the doug and wolf show, they were talking about Mora Jr. I think WSU gets the best coach they could get.

If I hear Randy Shannon's name lobbied as a candidate one more time, I'm going to vomit.... Repeatedly.

I'd rather them bring DE, Dirk or John Cooper back than Shannon. Hell, I'd rather them ask Kush at 82 to coach again over Shannon.

I'm reading Three and Out and I am getting a much better understanding of what Rodriguez had to face when at Michigan. By the way, I really hope the new strength coach will be Mike Barwis. This guy sounds like he would have the Cats stronger than any other team in the conference and in the best shape possible.

In a sentence or two, what were the issues for Rich Rod in Michigan, as explained by that book? All I hear is that he wasn't a "Michigan Man", which I have no idea what that means.

Houston Chronicle's recent article re Sumlin
http://www.chron.com/sports/solomon/article/Biding-time-might-be-best-for-Sumlin-2309570.php
Apparently, Houston's stadium is worse than many high school stadiums in Texas. There's one plus for ASU.

Interesting that UCLA will be offering Boise State's Petersen $3 mill/per year. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...boise-state-coach-to-resurrect-fallen-program
But I don't think he is going anywhere. Stanford tried to lure him in to be their coach last year, but instead he signed a big extension with Boise State.

It's not quick if your University is dedicated to becoming relevant. Something ASU obviously doesn't understand. Though I woudn't mind Sumlin one bit I think Leach was the prize IMO.

ESPN may have something to say about that.

While I don't trust Lisa Love's decision making process any more than most, I'm ready to wait and see on who ASU hires before declaring them "unwilling" to pursue relevance.

Just because it shines doesn't make it gold. If all of us could do the mulligan on the search for Dirk's replacement, I don't think one of us would have chose Erickson over the ex-NFL QB and then "unproven on the BCS level" head coach from San Diego University (Jim Harbaugh).

I've got no insight, but I'm almost 100 percent sure Kevin Sumlin is Option 1 for them and they're willing to wait to see what happens with Houston in the next few weeks, then actively pursue.

When he starts winning at Wazzu, they'll forget real quick IMO.

Seriously? ESPN owns the BCS and college football. If you want to sue them, good luck, even if Leach drops the suit there will be hard feelings.

So the ABOR gripes about Sean Miller's contract extension yet will give $2.5 annually for a guy who went 5-7 last year and an athletic department that runs in the red every other year? Makes sense.

To be fair before Miller's extension they didn't have the tv deal worked out. Each school gets $20 mil per year. Makes it easier to okay the deal.

It's easy to be quick when the guy you're hiring is out of work. ASU's targets have a conference championship game to play in this weekend. It delays things.

That's the new $1.5 million. If you want to be competitive, you have to pay market value. As long as the ABOR is on board with ASU's mission to be a top 3 program in the Pac, they know ASU can't afford to go cheap with the coach. And as someone else pointed out, that TV money needs to go to the program that has the best chance of reviving ASU's department coffers.

I'm guessing I don't have to say that will never be basketball, so ...

He is not without Risk and red flags... But Sumlin is a better choice than most...

Anyone know how he will be in recruiting?

Will he bring the Houston offense to ASU? Or is that more of a Case Keenum thing...

The other side of the coin is we could be getting Chris Petersoned here, and Sumlin is using us as leverage for a big extension, which while unlikely is still very possible..

Him and Mozzone apparently know each other and run the same type of offense. If he does come here, there's a good chance Mozzone is kept on the staff.

After Calvisi's tweet last night about "multiple sources" on the Sumlin discussions, I was expecting the Arizona Republic would be following up and have some details on their website this morning. But they got nothin!

Barf, I hate Mazzone's offense. I do however hope Sumlin (or whomever the next Coach is) keeps Steve Brussard on the staff, he seems to be ASU's best recruiter and put together a good portion of this nice class....if he stays maybe the majority of the class can be held together.
