I just visited the 'niners board, they would prefer a good DE over a good QB "like" Warner.

I wonder if this backfires on Kurt...

C'mon, the man wants to play two more years. What's the problem. 2 yrs. at 20M / 10M each guaranteed,.

What was the problem, they couldn't anty up to the only guy that's helped lead them above mediocrity?!

The problem would be if Warner decides to not play in 2010...then the Cards "guaranteed" contract still gets paid. This one of the issues MLB works with...players getting paid their salaries for years after they have been cut, or retired from teams.

There is a new report on ESPN by Michael J. Smith that says 1. our offer is 2 years 23 mil. , 12 mil. guaranteed. 2. says Cards will not budge off that offer. Sounds reasonable to me. The plot thickens!

That would be my line in the sand too. I think that is a very fair offer.

Well if you think that there's no sense in going on with the conversation. And NO one yr. at 10M with a team option for the second is not a competitive offer IMO. Not for what the team accomplished this past season.

2 years @ $23M, $12M guaranteed is a very good offer. It could make things close. Maybe this isn't so cut and dried after all.

The Cardinals' offer to Warner was respectable...but not exactly flattering...not for someone who just took a perennial loser to the Super Bowl.

That's why Warner is in SF and will likely be a 49er in matter of hours.

Seriously?

that's more than fair and Warner's stupid for not signing it on the spot. Go to SF. I wouldn't even care if the Cards pulled the offer once the plane hit the tarmac in SF.

The market is pretty bleak for a 38 year old QB.

You think that it is a coincidence that Warner went to a team within the division to do this? He's doing this to create leverage. Plain and simple.

I'll just disagree with you, along with most here in the thread.

I wouldn't budge either. That's a take-it-or-leave-it offer, IMO.

We don't get the Superbowl without DRC and the way that he shut down Roddy White and Steve Smith. Give that man 10M.

We don't get there without Antonio Smith and the way that he played in the playoffs. Give that man 10M.

Dockett. 10M. Fitzgerald, hell give that man another 10M. (I'm actually semi-serious on the last one) :D

Bob Kemp is interviewing bay area reporter. The 49ers have sent a private jet to pick Warner up and he will arrive in 20 minutes. They have supposedly never done this before.

The guy also thinks they will do more guaranteed money and maybe do a 3 year deal or something. He thinks they MAY go to $15 million per year.

I get the feeling...listening to the radio...this deal may happen...with the 49ers. They will probably sell Warner on maybe being able to play longer because he can hand the ball off more - per the reporter.

If Warner can get that deal, he should take it. It would not make sense for him to take lot less money and stay in AZ. Good luck to you, except against Cards.

I loved what you did for us last year, but life goes on.

Five thoughts on the Warner saga

March 2, 2009 4:28 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando

Five things to know while Kurt Warner and his wife, Brenda, are meeting with 49ers officials at team headquarters in Santa Clara:

1. This is starting to get ugly. Or at least edgy. Warner's camp is now releasing unflattering information about the Cardinals' offer. For example:

From Yahoo! Sports: According to a source close to Warner, he has been offered what amounts to a one-year deal, with one season at $10 million, and a team option for a second year at the same terms.

From ESPN.com: According to the source, the Cardinals' offer is $10 million in 2009 with an option bonus for $10 million in 2010. There are not any guarantees in the contract, so it is effectively a one-year deal at $10 million if the Cardinals don't want to bring him back in 2010.

2. The 49ers are committed at the ownership level. They paid for a private jet to escort Warner and his wife from Arizona to San Jose, near 49ers headquarters. Private jets are not cheap. If you know what it costs for a business to use one, please let me know. Also, if you know where to find flight information for private planes -- something akin to flightaware.com -- please point us in the right direction. Thanks.

3. Warner is not going through the motions. He brought his wife, which suggests the couple will make this decision together. That is no surprise, but Warner might not waste his wife's time if he were making this trip only to help his agent.

4. The 49ers are open to changing their offense. Former 49ers quarterback Trent Dilfer, now with ESPN, said that is the word from coach Mike Singletary. See video below.

5. Arizona remains the best place for Warner. We can debate whether the Cardinals should offer him more. We can debate whether Warner should be happy with the Cardinals' offer. There's no debating where he belongs. It's in Arizona and it's not even close.

That's what I was basically arguing about.

The Bidwill's need to step up.

13M this year to Warner still gets the Wilson deal done. Fitz is done. Boldin could still get done. Dockett has another year to wait. DRC??? Dansby has his money allready and a deal might bring that cap hit down.

:p

PLUS we can sign FA McFadden.

I think Whiz' long term goal is to crank up a good running game. I think he went with KW's wide open passing style because that is what fit the personnel and won games. It will be interesting to see if the Cardinals can become more or less a 50/50 run/ pass team.

They already have. They refuse to overpay for a 38 year old QB. The fact that they don't give a damn what you think shows me that they have turned the corner and that they are more concerned about winning then PR.

At this point if he goes he goes. He is showing that he is just money hungry if he does this. Nobody was willing to give the guy a chance after NY and we did and this is how he is going to repay AZ? I hope he stays but if he doesn't and God told him to be greedy I will of lost a lot of respect for him.

Is he money hungary or are we cheap? Should a super-bowl QB not make as much as one of the top 5 QB's? Results are what count and Kurt delivered. I think we have embarrassed him and our owners. We should have done a deal with him immediately after he decided he would come back and play football.

:biglaugh: I love your logic...by letting go the cornerstone to our super bowl run, and a starter in the pro bowl, we are more about winning than PR. Brilliant.

:) The cornerstone of the Super Bowl run LMAO. Brilliant. I guess you will be putting serious coin on the 49ers to win it all this year in Las Vegas as soon as Kurtis the stock boy and Brenda the cashier sign in San Fran. It was all Kurtis afterall.

A 38 year old who's been considering retirement is not a cornerstone.

Fitz is a cornerstone. DRC and Dansby are cornerstones.
