We're in week 10 of the first season in which we had zero offseason (Kolb got the playbook in the first week of training camp in which he couldn't participate). Its a bit premature to say how good or bad this trade is.

Furthermore its not looking that bad as DRC has been awful in Philly.

Everyone's looking awful in Philly. The Trade looks all right if it's DRC for Kolb, but we also threw in a second-round pick that's looking like it might be in the Top 45.

That makes the trade terrible, because at least DRC's absence for the Eagles was glaring once he went down (like how our offense started operating). This team improved once Kolb went down.

Take your time getting better, Kevin.

One thing is for sure, the coaches should definitely start the guy they don't want their long-term answer to be next week, as the Niners pass rush could very well turn that guy into David Carr in just one game!

Graves went out and spent a whole bunch of money on Kolb to be the starter.

And Rod Graves is an embarrassment to this organization, so one more embarrassing move, and signing is not going to be anything new.

Just throw it on the pile.

Agreed.

Kolb is 6'3" 218 lbs

Skelton is 6'6" and 244lbs

Better start Skelton just to be safe. :D

DOUBLE DEUCE!

I was going to contest the thread title but the NFL Network referred to it as a QB controversy so I guess that's close enough to official. Now, the question is, does the coaching staff consider it a controversy. Hopefully, yes. We are such an irrelevant team right now that a little controversy could be a very good thing. It might make us worth discussing nationally in addition to sparking a little local interest.

You didn't think there would be a controversy.

Skelton is showing some promise, and ability. I don't think that can be disputed. He is far from "dominating", but he IS a clutch QB. And a winning QB.

On the other side of things, Kolb has looking pathetic and worse by the week.

I don't see a controversy, Skelton is winning, so we stick with him. We lose next week, Kolb probably returns. We win, we stay with Skelton. Today was a good day, let's see if he can continue to improve.

I have no problem with the Kolb trade and the fact that we now appear to have a qb controversy. Kolb is still not healthy so start Skelton next week but have Kolb as his backup. Let's go do this on a weekly basis, whoever is doing best should start. We are not going to make the playoffs. We paid big bucks for Kolb but so what. If Skelton is better keep Kolb as an overpaid backup until it makes financial sense to trade or drop him. I care more about winning than anything else.

To quote the Wizard of Futility:

"I'll have to look at the film," Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "Kolb has done a good job for us this season. They've both had some games get squirrelly on them, but we haven't won on the East Coast in forever, so I'm just going to enjoy this right now."
Fitzgerald had two touchdown catches and made a sensational, over-the-shoulder diving catch to set up the go-ahead score in the fourth. He supported both QBs.
"I don't like to compare," he said. "That's not fair. Both of them, we feel we can win with and that's a good problem to have."

Maybe we can trade Skelton or re-sign him so he is a free agent this year. You know, keep that talent flowing out of Arizona.

Unreal.

Nah, I knew there'd be a controversy amongst us. Let's face it, had Skelton not been here we'd have been another Kolb embarrassment away from resurrecting the "play Hall" crowd. I just didn't think anyone outside of us diehard Cards fan would even notice. It's kind of hard to call it an official controversy if the coaching staff and the national media completely ignore it. Fortunately, it might actually gain some momentum now. It won't make a difference as to who starts but at least it might create a little buzz.

Skelton has more wins than Kolb, and has shown an ability to play in the clutch.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg of this epic discussion.

I say that you start Skelton next week regardless.

:claphat:

No we don't. I'm not saying Skelton sucks, but it took two ridiculous bounces for John to get the win today.

I'm also not saying Kolb is the long term answer. Just that they eye test tells me that KK is a better QB.

The eye test says Kolb?

The W and L test says Skelton.

41 for 75 54.67 completion rate 7.16 ypa 4 TD's 2 interceptions QB rating of 84.13 or so over two games against the 11th best and 12th best pass defenses in the league.

Stats wise it's not HOF or anything but for the guys 5th and 6th start you should be very much encouraged.

IMO there is no controversy at all, he's better.

His most worrying stat is his completion rate IMO, it's too low by quite a bit but you'd expect that with limited work with the number one's and having that little of experience.

The key is his progress, is he showing any?

To me he is but maybe that's just me.

I don't expect domination of any kind yet, I don't expect much of anything frankly but what I've seen is someone with a lot of poise and some promise and some wins.

I just don't see what there isn't to like here, if I'm the coach I want to see more.

I went into this in more detail in another thread, but starting Skelton over Kolbis incredibly short sighted. I understand the argument as I, like all of you, want wins. What makes the move short sighted is that you can never go back Kolb if Skelton fails. You have nothing to lose if you start Kolb and give him every opportunity to succeed this season as the season is lost already. However, if you start Skelton over a healthy Kolb, you have ruined any chance that Kolb has to develop in the future. You have given up on a QB that you went to great lengths to acquire after 7 starts for a guy who has looked mediocre, albeit impressively mediocre, against two sub .500 teams. We can always turn the reins to Skelton down the line if Kolb doesn't pan out. The only way that we can lose in the deal is if we bench a healthy Kolb for Skelton.

Its funny no one was saying don't get the best QB available in the offseason because we have John Skelton on the roster! No but after we win 2 games against bad teams 1 from a punt return in OT against a terrible 1-6 rams team and one against a banged up Philly team with Skelton playing decent, he is all of a sudden the guy that should start? Hopefully Whiz is not as shortsighted as some of you fans, the much improved D that has showed up is much more responsible for the wins than John Skelton! To judge Kolb on playing much tougher competition and losing very close games with the D playing like complete s%# much of the time is just ignorant. When Kolb is healthy he should be the starter.

I've said something similar a few times now. As a fan I'd much rather watch Skelton play than Kolb. However, if this coaching staff still believes that Kolb can become a decent QB than it makes sense to put him back in there when he's fully healthy. You don't destroy a player's confidence just because it increases the chance that you'll pick up an extra meaningless win or two. I'm not convinced that he'll ever be much but despite all the Whiz hate here, I'd have to trust his judgement on this one.

Confidence? What do you think it would do to his confidence if you put him back in there and he starts losing and playing the way he did before the injury now after Skelton won a couple games? The fans would start screaming for Skelton. Players may start giving up too. They were looking like they already have. But now are playing with Confidence. I dont think Kolbs confidence would be hurt if the team is winning games and they are going with the hot hand with the momentum albeit small. With that I think its opposite of what chopper stated. You can always go back to Kolb if Skelton starts losing. Stay with your Keeper so to speak. But you have to ride the Kolb ride once you do.. Wont be able to go back to Skelton and hope to get it back. You may have lost the team by then. And potentially fans. I am a big Kolb fan. Was ecstatic when we got him. But I would have to go with the hot hand. Would have to play my pair of Dueces rather than the potential of one king in hand. Wins are what keeps fans. What sells seats. And as a fan, i am just glad to see them win. They have momentum. Are getting more and more confidence. I'll stick with that.

What board were you reading? There were several people who said that the price was too high for Kolb and/or the other available QBs weren't that good and that they preferred we just go with Skelator to see what he had.

We're in great shape at the QB position. We have one guy who will stand in the pocket in the face of intense pressure but can't hit the broad side of a barn and another guy who we think can throw the football but won't stand in the pocket.

Fitz' amazing athletic ability was the key to today's offense not Skelton. Meanwhile Kolb has looked like a slowly sinking ship getting worse every week.
