Jaws stated he believes the Colts will be fine without Edge and that in fact the Edge is on the downhill side of his career. He pointed out that Edge had x amount of carries between 5 and 10 yards and only x amount of carries over 10 yards. He went on to compare Alexander numbers which were better.
The funny part of the show was Micheal Irvin speaking up on behalf of Edge and he said to Jaws, "1500 yards dude. Do you think there are a bunch of 1500 yd rusher laying around on a couch somewhere?" Had me cracking up.
Basically was telling Jaws whether it's 5 yard runs 10 yard runs or 20 yard runs , it still adds up to 1500 yards. That makes Edge a special back.

What a joke. Nothing angers me more then when a journalist does a stupid break down of a successful season and says someones on the decline. Who gives a crap how many less 10 yd or more gains Edge got last year. There are so many different factors that go into such stats that its asinine for someone to say Edge is on the decline. He is the most consistent RB in the league for cripes sake. The NFL season can't start soon enough, especially when idiots like Jaws are doing work like this

Exactly, he had the most runs of 10 - 15 yds in the NFL. That coupled with his pass blocking and pass catching make him one of the most complete backs in the NFL!

I just don't understand it. Obviously Jaws has nothing else to do if he's talking about BS like that. Edge has averaged a hair under 1500 yds per season for the last 3 years so you know what your getting. And since when does it matter how many runs he has for 5 yds or more or 10 yds or more? Just start the freakin season, I can't wait till Edge makes all these idiots shut up

Don't forget that James only played 15 games last year. You'll remember he sat out the exhibition game against the Cardinals.

What would you rather have anyhow??

10 X 5yd gains = a ton of clock (like 5 minutes) and 50 yards

OR

1 X 50yd gain = about 20 seconds and 50 yards

For resting the defense, keeping the other offense off the board, and controlling the tempo of the game I'd take the guy who gets me 5 everytime.

You can spin stats how ever you want......

Only stat I care about: 4.2 yards per carry. If he can crack 4 yards per carry this year then I will be happy as a clam!, compare that to last year for us we averaged just 3.2 yards per carry, give me that extra yard and I'll give ya 5-7 more wins last year.

It is why I liked the Cardinals signing Edge.

We don't NEED Edge to run for 2000 yards or 1500 yards. Our offense is like 60 - 40 pass to run nd therefore isn't going to produce a league leading rusher. What Edge brings and what the Cardinals need is a back that can get short yardage first downs, touchdowns in the red zone, capable blocking and the ability to close out games. Folks, this is what Edge does. He fills our weaknesses and fits our offense. I am not a huge Edge fan but he was the perfect back to sign.

Edge has morphed from when he first came into the league

Pre-knee injury he had home run hitting ability --

post knee injury, he has become a very smooth power back -- he may not take it 60 yards for a td, but will get you a tough 3,4,5 yards when you need it.

were a 5-11 team that cant worrie if a back is on the downhill or not. He was the best guy out there. A guy that is so talented he had no buisness ever making it to freeagentcy. We need to count our lucky stars and hope we can get a freakin Oline to block for him.

Anyone else see Edge on the sideline of the FSU/Miami game? His cousin is a true freshman running back for the canes.

Exactly! And I think a lot of the experts fail to see that.

As focused as we are on the passing game then Edge would solve the problem with 1000-1100 yards season. Between Edge, Milford, Liwienski, Latui, Looney and the rest of the OL ramaining relatively healthy - that should be possible.

I liked Jaws as a player but as an analyst, he's just as bad as Hoge. Both of them together are one concussion away from drooling on their teleprompters. I don't like Jaws talking about anything because he is usually wrong. I understand be skeptical about coming to AZ and playing behind theis O-line (especially after his pre-season rushing) but that was pre-season and with the pick up of Leweinski(sp?) Edge will be just fine.

I have a theory on it but I have no idea if I'm right we'll see this year. No question Edge lost a step with the knee injury and time but my theory is as follows.

The Colts throw the ball so well that everyone plays them defending the pass and that in part means deeper drops by the LB's, and safeties. What that means is more runs of 5-10 yards but less long runs because the LB's and DB's are further downfield?

It's something I noticed a lot in Colts games where Edge would get hit by a safety or LB and you'd think wow that guy must have ran a long way to get there. 8 in the box or short yardage defense is tougher to run against at the point of attack, but if you break the first wave, you get long runs. Seems to me that Alexander sees more of that type of defense and thus is able to bust some long runs despite not being all that fast, but Edge sees sagging zone defenses worried about the pass?

I guess we'll see this year how many long runs Rhodes and Addai rip off for the Colts.

You could be on to something there. All I know is Emmitt Smith had nearly 900 yards( behind basically the same line) in less than 16 games and I'd bet he didn't have more than 5 runs over 15 yards.

Yep, I think Edge will get yardage. He had 9 runs of 20+ in each of his first 2 years and since then 6 is the highest(2 years ago). Seems to me that as their pass game got better the chances for long runs lessened. But Edge had 94 first downs running last year, Shipp and JJ combined for 37 last year so I think we're pretty clearly right to expect a large improvement this year.
