:yeahthat:

I just dont understand how you can say a 23 year old kid is a "huge disappointment" so early in a season. The guy had a bad stretch in May but the baseball season is freaking long. We're still right there with the Giants after tonights win and considering that almost everyone predicted this team would be a non-factor this season, I'm pretty excited about what they are doing.

I know that it's easy to come into a thread months later and say haha you were wrong, so thats not what I mean, but the point is that we should give Upton a little more time to mature and develop before we declare him a disappointment.

This reminds me of that link someone posted in the Suns forum from a Knicks message board where some NY fan declared Amare was a total bust for the Knicks like 12 games into the season.

He's been playing great lately. Grace and Schulte talked at length after the game about how Upton was finally becoming what the team had been hoping for.

Let's not jynx anything... We're not even at the All-Star break. No doubt, thus far this season he's been very solid. He's batting .290 which is very good, but not great. Can he keep that type of average all year?
He's on pace to hit roughly 16-17 HR's by the break. Let's see if he can keep that pace, or something even close to it, by the end of the season. Would love to see it!
His OPS @ .893 is terrific. His RBI total is lacking, particularly given the run production this team has had...

Anyway, if at the end of the year he's sitting at a .285 or higher average, with 30 or more dingers, 90 or more RBI's and an OPS of .850 or higher - I would say he is well on his way toward becoming what the team had been hoping for. His 2009 season set the low-water mark... A guy with Justin's gifts should be consistently at and/or above that type of season. Last year was a major set-back. However, thus far this season, he is showing signs of getting to his '09 level and perhaps beyond - which is exactly what this team needs!

It is funny. He's increased his BA about 50 points since this thread was created.
Gibby got through to him. Great for both of them. And us.

Next stop -- Kelly Johnson, who is our runaway leader in strikeouts. That is a surprise. Then some fine tuning with Chris Young.

If Johnson drops below .200 again they've got to make a move.

He's the highest paid player on the team. Coupled with the year he had last season, he's going nowhere and the team will not be making any moves to deal with his crappy season thus far.

Kelly is a good player, I dont know what his deal has been lately. He keeps getting behind early in the count and its absolutely killing him. It seems like everytime he's up he's behind 0-2.

We NEED KJ to get going, IDK what he needs, maybe he needs to follow the Mark Grace model and get himself a slumpbuster or something.

I was thinking more like sit him for a couple of games or move him to the 8 spot. How long can you leave a guy in the 2 spot that's batting .200? The Dbacks are scoring runs but Johnson is killing a lot of rallies.

Actually, it was a platoon move. Gibby benched Johnson, as well as Montero and Parra against a lefty starter, as he has been doing.

Drew was the only lefty hitter in the starting lineup (in addition to the lefty pitcher Dukes).

Huge disappointment = 2011 All-Star. I nominate this as the worst thread of the year.

He was a disappointment when this thread posted. It is great that Upton has finally begun to listen to the message -- don't swing for a homerun every pitch, every at-bat . . . then throw a childish tantrum when you strike out.

Hopefully, his huge step forward won't be temporary, but rather a step in fulfilling his potential.

Hey, maybe if he begins to take steps back someone can show him this thread. :)

People need to be patient with ballplayers. Justin is only 23 years old and has more growing up but to say he is a huge disappointment and an average player at best is absurd.

Huh? I didn't say he is a huge disappointment. I said, "Hopefully, his huge step forward won't be temporary, but rather a step in fulfilling his potential."

And I didn't call him an average player at best. I don't remember anyone calling him average at best. Once again, I referred to him "fulfilling his potential". His potential is certainly better than average.

Although, frankly, I'm hoping he will eventually put up Ken Griffey, Jr., type numbers. But I don't think Upton (or Young) will ever be a feared middle-of-the-batting-order type hitter, game in and game out.

He's obviously referencing the OP where all the things you bolded were clearly stated. Not you.;)

That is correct. I thought it was pretty obvious myself.
