The Oakland #Athletics have a contingent, led by president Billy Beane, meeting today with Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray in hopes of persuading him to forego the #NFL and play baseball for them. They drafted him 9th overall last summer and gave him a $4.66 million bonus.

The #Raiders own the 4, 24, & 27 overall selections in the 2019 draft. If QB/OF Kyler Murray is on their radar, drafting him with a late 1st-round pick would mean a 4 yr deal worth approx. $11.5M ($6.5M bonus).

Also, the A's AAA team will play in Las Vegas starting in 2019.

He's pretty damn good being a top ten pick in baseball is a big deal.

I think he's using the NFL for leverage I think he goes baseball at the end of the day

It's looking that way and can you blame him? Baseball is a crap shoot in regards to making it to the show, while football will reduce your life span. Do what you can to get paid now in case you can't hit a MBL curveball. This would give him $20 million guaranteed to never take a hit in the NFL!

Sounds like MLB will allow it and some rival GMs are ok with it for the betterment of baseball. They are going to let them sign him to a MLB deal and put him on the 40 man roster. That means they have three years to promote him or they have to release him.

Good for Murray if he can pull this off. It's a smart move to try and save his head from concussions from the NFL if he can and still get paid.

Also if he ever becomes a very good MLB player he will make a lot more money in baseball than he ever would have in football.

Justin Upton makes about as much as Aaron Rodgers and Bryce Harper is about to make more than Rodgers, Wilson, and Garrappolo combined. If he grinds out in the pros, he has a better chance at making more money and a better quality of life

Baseball money is definitely better than football, but it usually takes 7 years for athletes to make life changing money. I don’t think Kyler wants to wait that long while he can get money quicker by playing other sports.

If he can get another $15m guaranteed from baseball, that would be close to $20m total. Similar guaranteed money for a #8 pick in NFL Draft.

Apparently not only are the A's all in on this but as has been mentioned MLB REALLY wants to help the A's they understand they are losing prospects to other sports and they don't want it to happen with Murray.

I get baseball prospects develop differently but remarkable amounts of money being proposed for a kid that hit .122 as a freshman, much better as a soph. The A's apparently think he's got a chance, combination of power and speed. He's going to be 22 in August so he's already a bit old for a kid that will probably start in A ball. I read something the other day that said the ceiling for him is a poor man's Rickey Henderson, yeah let's not put too much on him just compare him to a HOFer.

I think it's just hype. People forget but Rickey was a very highly rated RB in HS in Oakland, but he smartly chose baseball. All time great 100 walks a year, all the stolen bases, very good LF and a 300 hitter with pop. Just no way it's fair to even mention him in the same sentence as Murray right now. IIRC Rickey was 20 when he broke in with the ML A's, Murray is already older and nowhere near as advanced. They said the same thing when Deion was trying to play baseball.

I do hope Murray pursues baseball if he really wants it, much better long term health circumstances, but yeah I also hope the A's don't hype him too much. If they pay him all that money there will be a tendency to want to rush him and that's not a good thing.

Don't think he will affect our 1st overall pick in any way. Exceptional talent, exciting player, who can probably be successful in the NFL if he goes all-in. But the whole baseball thing is worrying and should put any hope to bed that Murray will have something to do with the 1st overall pick.

Like @Veer said, I'd argue it doesn't make that much of a difference. I can't see Kyler being the #1 pick with his height and the looming baseball concern.

Haskins is probably the safer pick that high for a team looking at QB.
