Actually, Desmond "changing" future events by altering current events is plausible given all the philosophical references they have gone into plus the idea of "possible worlds" is still out there as a viable explanation - in my opinion.

Using that rationale, you're saying that the backpack they found could still be Penny's even though it wasn't her that fell from the sky?

I tend to suspend disbelief for this show, but that's just a little too much, IMO.

no - it is either all penny and her stuff or else it is not. the philosophical concept of possible worlds has more than been hinted at during the show in other episodes - particularly when it is dealing with Desmond's character.

I am so looking forward to seeing where this goes--looks like Sun becomes the centerpiece the rest of the season--about time she got some screen time this season.

And as a side note, did you guys notice where Sawyer got his "mix tape"?

At least it was a nice reference to our missing couple.

So... did Desmond misread his vision and incorrectly assumed that the parachuter was Penny, or did he accidentally change who that person was supposed to be when he saved Charlie?

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the flash's of Penny makeup the photo or the place of the photo? I think it's plausible to assume that Des just didn't understand what he was seeing.

I also don't think he altered events. So far it appears when he does things like saves Charlie....he only delays events not actually alters them. I have seen no evidence to suggest that the things he does causes any major changes but to those who he can save....a la Charlie.

I am loving these new episodes! So much to take in!

Did anyone else notice Ms. Hawking in the picture on Brother Campbell's Desk? I wonder what their connection is?

Yes. So him ending up with the Monks was no fluke. Remember that a MONK came to him while he was passed out. I think it was to set him on the right path so to speak.

All in all a good episode. I didn't think it was great as the others lately but still good. I expect the next couple episodes to be in the same vain to setup the season finale.

I enjoyed them marching along the beach whistling the tune from the Bridge of the River Kwai (or the Breakfast Club if you prefer). The slivers of humor in between the mystery are one of the things that make the show so good.

On another note, I just watched the last 2 episodes again from Season 1, and I think they are probably the best the series has ever done. Instead of a single character having the flashbacks, they pretty much show every character throughout the episodes in their mini-flashbacks (except for Sayid and Claire, but those flashbacks are in the special features of the Season 1 DVD).

The last 5 or so episodes of this season are finally returning to that kind of quality, although the way they intermingled the raft, Sayid and Charlie trying to get Aaron from Rouseau, and Jack/Locke/Kate/Hurley with the dynamite was brilliant.

And watching this now, even though I don't like Michael much as a character, they really need to bring him back in the finale this year or at least definitely next year.

I've always liked Hurley's episode from season one about the numbers. At the time I first watched it I thought the first episode of season 2 was great because they told us right away what was inside the hatch.

That said, I think my favorite episode was the finale from last season. I think that Desmond back stories are some of the most revealing... maybe not the last one.

Just got through the first 4 of season 2. Amazing how this show keeps the continuity really perfect. And their reveals are pretty amazing. Watching Desmond's scenes for the first time, there are a ton of things they revealed in his first big ep that you remember from later episodes (even the one from last week) -- namely the picture of him and Penny and the fact that the Orientation film was behind The Turn of the Screw on the bookshelf. I also remembered when we find out that Bernard is one of the Tailies it was such a strong scene--it followed a very good sequence where Hurley is giving out the food they found to everyone and he becomes everyone's hero.

I still don't find Michael very likable, but you gotta appreciate the dynamic that those 3 actors have (Josh Holloway, Harold Perrineau and Daniel Dae Kim). You really believe that they are who they are portraying. It also helps my opinion of Michael to find a character that is even more unlikable (Ana Lucia). Well, until Henry shows up in a couple episodes, that is... :D

Has anyone here ever read "Atlas Shrugged?"

This season has reminded me of parts of that book - just wondering if anyone else thought the same thing.

Why do the monk and the lady from the jewelry store care so much that Desmond gets to the island?

I'll tell you why: because they can see his destiny--and his destiny is being a central player in exposing the island. The monk and the lady are NOT in league with the Others, in fact, quite the contrary--they're the opposing force to the others. They're the ones who were displaced by the others (as hinted at by the Russian, and even more vaguely by Juliette when she admitted to Kate she didn't know what the smoke monster was).

I think to a degree, Desmond is the pawn of this "opposing force." IIRC, Des is the only one in the flashbacks who is seemingly influenced by other people to push him towards the island.

they're replaying last week's episode before this week's on wednesday. i think i'm gonna watch it again before the new one. too much going on...
I've been saving 3 week's worth at a time and watching them back to back. I might just save the rest (four?) and watch those all together.

I had last week's episode on the TV while I was working yesterday. One thing I noticed was that the first time they show the series of flashes from the future there is a flash that they don't show later in the episode. It's Desmond and Penny holding each other and then giving each other a kiss. It looked to me like it was on the island, but I'll have to wait until Wednesday to check it out.

I thought the old lady was insistent that Desmond make it to the island because it was important that he would be there to push the button and ultimately save the world by turning the key.

They always do a good job of making the next episodes look great, but they forgot me really stoked for these last five episodes. I only wish we wouldn't have to wait so long for next season to start.

I think that's what they want you to think.

My question is how did the girl in the parachute get the picture that Des has? I mean they took the picture together from a street photographer before Des left Penny, right? Do they generally give you the negatives along with the picture you payed for when you do that?

'splains alot about why Ben plays mind games with people...but not why he doesn't seem to be able to throw a football over a mountain.

Penny gave it to her so she knows who she's looking for.

Okay, but I've never had a picture taken by one of those street photographers, so do they give you the negatives, or does anybody remember how many pictures she paid for?

I think he ment there was only one picture and Des had it... How did they get a second picture?
Oh. Why wouldn't they just have developed 2--it's not a polaroid, is it?

Or, maybe since Des seems to be time traveling (or at least he did once), maybe he left a "future" copy behind.
