I think you never give up a sure thing. Especially when its about 75 to 100 million dollars worth.

You are assuming there will be no rookie wage scale in place in the new CBA?

Sure there will be a draft this year but none of them can sign until the new CBA is done. So even if they are drafted before the new CBA they will still be subject to new CBA salary rules.

Unless he falls completely out of the 1st round next year he will not be losing as much money as people think he will.

People like to say, "Life is not all about money" but then skewer anyone who actually puts that philosophy into practice.

Yep!

Which wont happen barring catastrophic injury. Look at Bradford with a shoulder injury still #1 overall.

I don't know. I think it's strange he announce before Harbaugh has decided. That tells me he's staying no matter what. It kind of takes some pressure off Harbaugh leaving too. Now Harbaugh doesn't have to take Luck's future into his consideration in that Luck didn't tie his decision to Harbaugh's.

Or maybe he hopes to influence him to stay. Either way I think it is foolish. 60% of his Oline is graduating.

You guys are crazy he is sitting with a winning lotto ticket in his hand or go back to school and take a chance it's no good in a year. So dumb it's not even debatable Stanford is not going anywhere he can finish his education anytime especially if he is filthy rich! Ask leinart if he should have went back hell no if he would have came out he goes one and is filthy rich and probably starting for miners still!

It's a moronic decision for sure. It's the EXACT same moronic decision that Leinart made which landed him at #10 for us instead of at #1 for whoever drafted in that spot the previous year.

There is no upside as someone already stated, but it's his decision to make and his priorities to set....

It's pretty rare that the #1 overall pick is going to walk into a great situation - especially as a QB ..... usually the problems run much deeper than that one position and the QB will have to learn and earn their chops while being impacted by those other deficiencies

I think it's a curious decision in that there was a lot on the table - hard to pass up that much money from being the sure fire #1.

Maybe he thinks he can win the Heisman next year, win a national championship and improve to the point where he thinks he could perform better as the "QB saviour"

Maybe he's not concerned about injuries (referencing sam bradford still going #1 and performing) or feeling that if he drops he won't fall out of the 1st round and worst case is falling into a better situation (like leinart, roethlisburger & rodgers did) - that he'll still be a multimillionaire, just not as much.

So trade off a few million for another year in college, the opportunity to do things that haven't been accomplished at stanford and then still transition into the NFL.

I think it's a pretty big risk though

I love Luck but I don't think its out of the realm that Matt Barkley passes him by this time next year, especially with a worse team and no Jim Harbaugh in place.

Don't see how this was the educated decision ;)

Would you want to play for Carolina in the first year of a capped rookie scale, or take your chances next year?

Ill take my chances.

Exactly.

So how does that make the kid a moron like most of you are saying? He obviously isn't a moron. You can't be a moron and get into Stanford. He just has different values than most football fans.

Even if he never gets drafted at all he's still going to be more successful, and comfortable, in life than 99% of the people ripping him.

He comes from a family with money.
You keep saying this, but even people "with money" can't sneeze at millions of dollars. That's why you have wealthy-beyond-their-dreams people jumping ship for better-paying jobs all the time.

It's not matter what you or I say: we disagree. I'm not trying to convince you of my position and I won't be swayed to yours. IMO, this was a poor decision (the only thing that gives me pause is Nashman vehemently agreeing with me).

Same decision Peyton Manning made.

Did Manning project at #1 the year he decided to return to school?

I know that he went #1 when he actually entered - but there was TIGHT debate about Leaf being #1. Manning wasn't a concensus when he did come out because Leaf emerged.

Even if he projected to #1 the prior year, when he eventually entered the Draft, he did not improve his position by staying another year. #1 is #1 and no one can pick before that....

I've already adjusted my initial response to be m=limited to this decision.

so what? Let's remember you're making this point the next time you have a criticism of a pro athlete. You know, because they're way better at their sport than you'll ever be.

He could not do as well next season with Harbaugh gone. Manning's coach didn't split did he?

From all accounts I've read and heard, Harbaugh has built a powerhouse that will last for a few more years. Stanford will be another solid team again next season, and now with Luck returning, they have a legit shot at competing with Oregon for the Pac-10 title.

Secondly, were you joking about the Barkley thing?

He's not a moron, but the decision is certainly exists on moronic qualities, IMO. There is no upside in terms of the NFL. However, there must certainly be non-NFL considerations with personally-held upside for him to have made this calculation....

MESA! :thud:
Yup all valid points. But in the long and short of it he still isnt a moron. He comes from a family with money. He will have a Stanford education. He will have some sort of insurance policy that will pay him handsomely should something occur.

He needs to do what is best for him in his mind. not anyone elses. Still not a moron in anyway shape or form.
There is 6-figure money, and then there is 8-figure money. Which do you take?

If there is one, the class of 2012 (Luck's year, now) will be the first. The deal won't get done before April of this year.
