Cards could afford it. Easily actually. Just depends on how serious they are at "upgrading" the pass rush.

Out of all the free agents talked about, this guy is one that I would spend a lot of money on.

It is worth the risk. 25 years old, so far has bottomed out at around 7 sacks, meaning you get about 7 sacks out of the guy on a bad year. 6'2" and 275 lbs.

What more do you need ?

We're not going to find better in the draft. Over paying for a position of need is fine once & while. Especially with legit SB shot.

I would like the Cards to sign Oliver, but I am ok if they don't. So many ways to manufacture a pass rush, and I'm not seeing too many guys who can do so on their own. William Hayes can get you 8 sacks a year. Robert Ayers the same. Draft and develop a guy. Draft a DE who can push the pocket. Sign or draft a 4-3 rush end for sub packages. The one thing I do know is that Von Miller is rare, and I don't see a player like him available or that we have missed out on.

Jeff Darlington ‏@JeffDarlington The Giants just made Olivier Vernon the second highest paid defender in the NFL. Jaguars bowed out as soon as it reached record numbers.

The Giants have spent nearly $100 million on two DEs who have three double-digit sack seasons between them.

Did the Giants get duped by the fake story and up their bid?! Holy smokes, what a stupid contract!

Why'd they keep JPP if they're going to blow 15% of their entire cap figure on another DE?

Agreed. It was painful to watch the Panthers game, Newton could have had a tea party in the pocket.

There is only so much you can do as a secondary.

EDIT: But $85 million dollar contact would strap this team in other areas, NO WAY!!!!!!

I know I keep repeating myself.. But this is total insanity. 17 million per year for maybe a slightly above average DE? That's almost top tier QB money. What is the world coming to?

How does a guy whom entering the 5th year of his career with basically zero accolades, no All-Pro, no Pro-Bowl, one double digit sack year (3 years ago), and a member of one of the lousier defenses in the league get one of the biggest contracts in the league?

I watch quiet a bit of football and I only vaguely knew of this guy before today.

Having several good pass rushers is different than having a few ok ones. Our defense was over it's skates last year anyways. Campbell was average. No one stepped up opposite of him at DE. Rucker is a sub player only. Okafor regressed, Freeney was good in spurts. Golden was a rookie. No pass rush from the ILB spot.

We didn't have personnel to try and manufacture one. Carolina manufactures a pass rush and does a pretty good job of it. That is what we can strive for in an offseason. Von Miller isn't and wasn't available.

The Panthers manufacture a pass rush. It seems to work pretty well.

Bunk... The cards could easily afford a high dollar free agent... And have money left over... This team is almost there and has a very small window to win a Super Bowl sometimes it's worth it... Nobody saying you have to go on a shopping spree with a bunch of free agents but they need to improve the front seven and especially the pass rush if not we're just a good team with NotSh nobody saying you have to go on a shopping spree with a bunch of free agents but they need to improve your front seven and especially the pass rush if not we're just a good team with no **** at title.... Whoopeeee
Like I said. There was no way the Cardinals could afford to bring in a guy like Oliver. Too many other teams with tons of cap space and in need of pass rushers.

Because you need 2 good DEs, maybe? Along with Hankins and Damon Harrison, the Giants have gone from a DL that sucked to one that can be pretty good against both run and pass. Which will make their LBs and DBs look better. I'm not sure Vernon is worth that money, but Ayers wanted $10M and Jerry Reese's job is on the line, so hopefully he's right with a gamble like that, for his sake.

Carson's got 2 years left, IMO and there's no such thing as sustainable success without a QB. The time is now. This is the time to roll the dice.

Yessir! Denver did with all those secondary players & Ware & it got them a title.
