Bosa has the right to ASK for certain things. Chargers have the right to DENY those requests.

And that is the "Rights to both the teams and players" we're talking about.

Also correct. Chargers are not following the precedent. But precedence is simply a tradition. Not a obligation. They can say no to the precedence. That is their RIGHT to do so.
But you don't Seem to get that the Chargers are obligated to offer Bosa a higher dollar amount than Elliot (i know in theory it's last year #4 + increase in cap) and Bosa Can wait to sign until november. It's Bosa's right to do so when the Chargers don't follow precedence.

But bang up job by the Chargers not offering the same terms as all other 31 teams. But as you said. It's their right to display thenselves as a cheap team that doesn't follow CBA precedence. I'm sure that will work out Well for Them in attracting free agents

If I ever get drafted, I'm hiring Bodha as my agent. That way I'm guaranteed the worst possible contract and just accept whatever the team offers.

Where he is missing the point is that SD holds his rights to play in the NFL. Unlike the Target employee who can quit and go to Kohl's, Bosa can't "quit" and go play for the Chiefs if he doesn't like what SD is offering.

no...but he can quit and go play for the Milwaukee brewers...
the NFL is the employer really with the way revenue sharing is done...each team is like a division, or branch, of the league...
Bosa should sign the day before the season starts, then "pull a hammy" on his first play from scrimmage...nagging injuries those hammys...could sideline him right up until he gets the other half of his signing bonus....shame...

The more I read about this, the more I think the Chargers have no clue what it's doing.

The team is trying to have its cake and eat it too. Since 2012, every #3 pick has either had offset language removed from the contract, or the signing bonus was paid in full by the end of the player's rookie season. The Chargers want offset language and to complete payoff of bonuses by March 2017. Just in this draft, by comparison, Goff and Ramsay, who went #1 and #5, have no offset language in their contracts and will have their bonuses paid by the end of 2016, so the Bosa camp has been pretty flexible.

By the way, Bosa's agent is Tom Condon. Who TF does Tom Telesco think he is? The Bosa camp has been more than flexible, just do the damn deal and move on.

But he's not a baseball player. My point is, if he wants to play in his profession, his rights are limited to SD for the 1st year, at least.

Personally, I don't agree with giving him the offset language but I don't see why SD is balking at giving him his signing bonus at once.

I have a long history of siding against rookies...but the slotting has really offset the risk for teams....that guarantee is the only safety net a player has... they really should just give him his money...they get to pro rate it anyway....are they broke?

There is if you can be cut without the team paying 100% of the money that they agreed to pay. Clearly this issue isn't as black and white as you make it seem.

If you're so bad at your job that you get fired by the team, and don't even show up for work for three of the five years, why should they have to pay you? You're not entitled to their money. This is just part of the normal negotiation, and unfortunately it's gone on long enough to become sports news.

What this really means, since SD is making a show of breaking precedent, is that they have concerns about Bosa. Either his ability to hold up or his ability to stay clean or something.

We aren't talking about $$$$, we're talking about offset language which the team has the power to offer or reject.

They chose to reject. Bosa mad. He can sit out if he wants, but when November comes that same offer will still be on the table collecting cobwebs.

Again, obligated means legally or morally bound by law. If the Chargers don't give Bosa what he wants literally nothing is going to happen. The NFL isn't going to punish them. Its not an obligation, its an option.

See, you do get it.

I never said I agreed with their choice. However, I do defend their right to make that choice (even if its wrong).

Pretty sure It's an obligation under the CBA

The offset language is not under the CBA, that's why they are negotiating it.

negotiating = options

options = can be yes, can be no

Chargers chose no. Bosa either has to accept it, or sit. But if he sits, hes not getting paid. And Chargers have 100% right to not give in to his demands.

And it should be pointed out the WHYS of both sides.

1.Chargers don't want to continue paying Bosa if he busts and gets cut. Understandable.

2. Bosa wants to keep getting paid if he busts and gets cut.

The argument of "Bosa wants to protect himself in case of injury or being unfairly cut" is pretty thin. Because hes the #2 overall pick. The Chargers aren't going to cut the guy for almost any reason ACCEPT for if hes a Rolando Mcclain type screw up or Trent Richardson level bust. If youre a great player, and you know youre a great player, why put all this effort into getting "bust insurance" for yourself?

Bosa focusing on the extreme unlikelyhood hes cut, rather than focusing on becoming a great player and getting to work, is concerning.

It's always been amazing to me that people will defend the billionaire owners of the NFL to the hilt over the players when athletes in other sports leagues get every penny of their contracts guaranteed. Yes, sometimes players take hardline positions on pay that are debatable compared to other NFL players. But NFL players take risks that no other athletes have to take.

I don't know if they should 'have' to pay you. All other major sports in America operate that way. I know that I don't believe that only one side should have the power to terminate contracts for any reason. That's not how most contracts work either, sports or otherwise. Throw in the fact that NFL players risk much more with long term health effects than any other sports, and it seems even less appropriate.

There might be a chance Joey Bosa is overrated and he himself might think he's a bust.

This thread and your argumentation is just stupifying...

You draw up all these conspiratory theories about Bosa's motives for this.

There is a CBA in place. The Chargers are obligated to offer Bosa x amount of money as the 3rd overall Pick. Under the slated system the amount is fixed and all the contracts have been formed in a certain Way. The Chargers are offering Bosa a contract worse than all other 31 teams would. How about Bosa's motive is that he wants a standard contract under the CBA as the 3rd overall Pick.

With the New CBA and the slotted system top draftpick contracts Were reduced to almost 1/3 in value and 50% in signing bonus. To balance this out the players have gotten this offset language and single payout into their contracts. The Chargers don't want to do what all other teams see as standard

And they have that right to go against custom.

CBA should've negotiated offset language so these situations didn't happen. Lifes not fair.

Great article breaking down whole thing... I still agree with the Chargers

Reiterates what Ive been saying.

Chargers position is a long-standing team policy. Applies to everyone. Mentioning that it even applies to guys like Phil Rivers pretty much smothers any chance Bosa has of winning this standoff.

Bosas position is "Hey! He got 2 and I only got 1! Wah! No fair!". (in reference to top 3 picks on other teams)

Well. This is the first time the Chargers has had a top 5 Pick under the New CBA.

No comparison

Disagree.

San Diego is being very inflexible in this situation. This quote from the article sums up pretty much the entire process:

Bosa's camp is willing to accept a contract without offsets where a portion of the signing bonus is deferred to 2017 or a deal with offsets but the entire signing bonus is paid in 2016. The Chargers want a contract which has offsets and signing bonus deferred to 2017. The two sides reportedly have been an impasse since late July where the Chargers still haven't responded to Bosa's latest offer.

In summary, Bosa's camp is being flexible by providing shared control of the situation:You (Chargers) can put in offset language but pay us all bonus money by the end of 2016, or take offset language out and spread the money until 2017. The Chargers are falling back on their own personal history of dealing with contracts, which evidently is not working. In addition, the table is set for San Diego to get this done swiftly with the new CBA slotting system. This is beyond Rod Graves level of embarrassment.

BTW - Bosa's agent is Tom Condon. He knows what the hell he's doing, more so than Telesco.

Exactly. Bosa wants special treatment compared to everyone else on the roster.

Tom should have known from the beginning that this is how San Diego has done business...especially since he's the agent of both Antonio Gates and Manti Te'o...and Te'o should have been drafted and signed with the new CBA, right?

The Chargers remind me of the old Cardinals before Michael B took over and UoP Stadium opened up plus throw in a little sprinkle of Rod Graves.
