Just giving props to the Mercury (aka the only basketball team in Phx that can win a title :() who are now up 1-0 over San Antonio in the Semi's.

The Mercury are trying to win their 3rd WNBA title and go back to back after winning it all last season.

Go Phx!

It's a shame they don't get more fanfare. I've tried my very hardest to watch and get into it. I just can't seem to do it. The one sport my town is the best in and I can't get into it. Of course.

Heck, I love watching them. They are beating San Antonio! At least one basketball team in the valley can beat San Antonio! LOL! They have some real tough competition once they get out of the first round. It's not going to be a cakewalk for the Mercury. Also, I am proud of Steve Nash going to their games and supporting the team!

I've watched their playoff runs in the past and it was fun to watch. Didn't even know they were in the playoffs. I'll check it out. Big weekend for US Mens Basketball though.

Hmm, I know it's been a little while, but you do know we SWEPT the San Antonio Spurs in this year's 2nd round of the playoffs, right??

ummm who cares

Someone still living in basketball stone-age??
They are an exciting team to watch. I took a niece and my boy to go see them once and we enjoyed the game.
It will be interesting to see if they are able to win back-to-back.
Will that make them the first AZ professional sports to do that?

The Mercury have won two WNBA championships in the past three seasons.

They've started up 1-0 in their quest for a third in four years.

They adjusted to a major chemistry change this year, and are now playoff-strong (a lesson their parent Suns have never learned).

Diana Tourasi considered taking off next season to play in Europe (where the pay is higher), but has decided to stay with the Mercury for another title run next season.

And they achieved despite a coaching change during this time.

Why in the world is anyone making fun of them for being the best at what they do? Our hometown team.

Go Mercury! Keep up the good work. Maybe the Suns will get the idea before they hit fifty years.

You know the two titles they won were under a perimeter oriented run and gun style you continually decry, right? They traded away one of their smalls (Pondexter) for a big and had a significantly worse regular season record, only getting into the playoffs b/c the West was so lousy this year.

They are professional athletes. They work hard and represent the state city well. I wont pretend to be a huge fan, I've been to exactly 1 Mercury game and I was taken there. I just thought the ladies could use the smallest bit of aknowledgement for actually winning it all in their league, sorry you disagree.

But the Mercury did get into the playoffs, despite a sub-.500 record and are now strong for the post-season.

Today's headline tells it all. "Mercury likely to stick with bigger lineup."

San Antonio, because of injuries, is going with three Guards, using the Suns long-running philosophy -- put your best players on the floor regardless of position.

The Mercury, despite being built on speed, can smell the kill and are going with a bigger lineup.

A bigger lineup . . . strength in the post-season. Oh, if only the Suns would think that way.

Watching the game and their rebounding is impressive. no 2nd chance points for the stars, at least 3 players are available to fight for rebounds, and they are always running, despite the fact they are mostly playing big!!!
With thier size and the speed they get up and down the court, they have a good chance of repeating.

So the Mercury are playoff strong now because they are bigger but weren't playoff strong when they won 2 titles going small? Didn't the Mercury set a record for most ppg allowed this season?

Quick, ask the Mercury center whether she'll play for the Suns! That would solve everything, right?

So then how did the Mercury win their last 2 titles when they didn't have this ability to go big?

You're too hung up on style and basketball cliches. Any style can win a NBA title, its more a matter of having the best players. If one style was vastly superior, wouldn't everyone be running the triangle? A team that runs the triangle has won 11 titles in the past 20 years. Coaches are smart though, they realize its Jordan, Pippen, Shaq, Kobe and Pau that matter, not some system or style.
