Stanford did it as has several college teams over the years.

I'm amazed that in 2013 people still act like they don't get the name is intended to be a slur.

Jack Kent Cooke the prior owner spent years and thousands of dollars running an intentional disinformation campaign to protect the name. he went so far as to hire an actress, who it appears wasn't even Native American, and have her portray a Native American princess. everytime it would come up he'd trot her out and have her give a little speech where she talked about how the name made her feel proud of her heritage. After she passed away someone did some research and found out the tribe she claimed to belong to was not real, and that she wasn't using her real name and it was very unlikely she wasn even Native American. I think it's pretty obvious if an owner goes to those lengths, he knew something was wrong.

I've also never understood the money angle, will people be mad when they change it, sure, but eventually Washington fans will go out and buy new hats, new shirts, new jerseys, and they'll make a ton of money as the fans repopulate their closets with new logo clothes.

You nailed it Russ. The name will be changed. It's just a matter of time.

N knocking, heard of it. DDD is a much better term as it's both alliterative and perfectly discriptive. :)

Smear the queer, played it, no idea what kids call it today

N toes for brazil nuts, didn't ever know of that until some old lady called them that. I love brazil nuts

One you did not mention mulli, is n-rigging for basically MacGyvering something. Correct term is jury-rig, people say jerry-rig and I remember hearing n-rig a lot. No idea why.

The only Sambo's still open is in Santa Barbara, CA. So, if you make it over there to eat "every chance you get" you are much more of a high roller than I thought. Especially surprising with the way you push Dave Ramsey's stuff.

Sambo's on the Beach. We get there at least once or twice a year...sometimes more. I've posted about it before in posts about our travels.

Best part of Dave Ramsey's plan is being debt-free except our mortgage. Makes a trip to Sambo's no big deal at all.

When I was much younger - and in mixed company - I said I n...eatly rigged something. I grew up with my grandpa, Uncle, Mom, etc. all using that phrase and it began to roll off my tongue...until I caught myself. Yikes.

Truly, the only reason the term Redskins is still in place, is the lack of societal and electoral presence of Native Americans. That is why it is still cool to use blatantly racial terms in regards to them.

So we need to step in and have Red Mesa High up North ditch their team name too, right? If it is offensive to Indians - we can't allow a tribe to use the name, right?

Another difficult word in that same vein is "********" as in describing something stupid. While you don't hear people say "that's so gay" much any more, ******** is easily used, a lot. With friends that have kids with disabilities, it can be awkward when someone says that, and I catch myself often before looking like a jerkface.

Huh, I always thought "Redskins" was reference to being sun burned bad.
I was as red as a lobster once after a bad burn.

Yeah, pointing out that you budget well has nothing to do with spending money on having fun. Being on a budget doesnt mean you live in your closet

Old habits die hard.

"We" really don't have anything to do with it.

However, it's a false equivalence to compare a high school deep in the reservation to an NFL team. It is not hypocritical for the Native Americans on the Navajo reservation to use it, and for a big corporation like the Washington Redskins, that never had any connection to Native Americans, use it.

Okay, forget that one high school. What about the other 59 or so that also use the name? Or the 500 plus that use Indian names in general?

Change them all?

500 high schools use ‘Redskins,’ ‘Indians,’ or ‘Braves’ as team name

http://blogs.marketwatch.com/thetel...-use-redskins-indians-or-braves-as-team-name/

"We" didn't even change every geographical location in Arizona with "squaw" in its name (even though Indians will say it is not offensive anyway) when that was a big political deal here. There are still many places in AZ and hundreds if not thousands of places nationwide with "squaw" in their name...and plenty of products sold on Indian land using the name like "Squaw Moccasins" for sale, etc.

Just more ridiculous political correctness.

"Cracker" is widely known as slang for white people. How long until we go after Nabisco and anyone else that thoughtlessly uses the word "cracker" ??

How long until someone attacks the use of "the dark side" as a negative?

Clearly racial.

I would reply that it is far more ridiculous to equate the term "redskin" to "saltine cracker."

And to post a wiki link about the term "Sambo" that clearly describes it being used as a racist term, but still failing to see any big deal about it.

The name does not seem to have acquired the intentional, open racist connotation until the first half of the 20th century

That is from Wiki.

Ooh. It's from wiki.

So is this (same wiki)

Sambo is a very common name (used both as a family name and as a first name) in Madagascar and is also the Malagasy word for "boat."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo_(racial_term)#Etymology_and_usage

Here's a different wiki:

Sambo is a Russian martial art.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo_(martial_art)

Whatever.

Sambo is not a bad word to me - clearly, since my dog is named Sambo. It is the name of a character in an old children's story. Even the wiki says "The book's success led to many pirated, inexpensive, widely available versions that incorporated popular stereotypes of "black" peoples." People turned it into something racial over time adding their own crap to the original story - which was a harmless tale of a boy outwitting tigers.

Any word can be taken and turned into something other than its original meaning.

Spook Hill was named for supernatural spirits believed to be in the vicinity. Years later black leaders protested the name and demanded it be changed because they considered "spook" to be a racial slur against blacks.

That kind of political correctness is ridiculous.

The Vortex!
Breaking News! The Washington Redskins will change their name!

Washington has been determined to be too embarrassing of a term so they will now be known simply as The Redskins.
