I would reply that it is far more ridiculous to equate the term "redskin" to "saltine cracker."

And to post a wiki link about the term "Sambo" that clearly describes it being used as a racist term, but still failing to see any big deal about it.

That is from Wiki.

Agree - Brian - you are being obtuse on this.

So you wouldn't have an issue with the Chicago Faggots, or the New Orleans *******?

Because Redskins is equally offensive

Well that F word means something else to someone somewhere, so I would think some have no problem with it.

Okay, forget that one high school. What about the other 59 or so that also use the name? Or the 500 plus that use Indian names in general?

Change them all?

500 high schools use ‘Redskins,’ ‘Indians,’ or ‘Braves’ as team name

http://blogs.marketwatch.com/thetel...-use-redskins-indians-or-braves-as-team-name/

"We" didn't even change every geographical location in Arizona with "squaw" in its name (even though Indians will say it is not offensive anyway) when that was a big political deal here. There are still many places in AZ and hundreds if not thousands of places nationwide with "squaw" in their name...and plenty of products sold on Indian land using the name like "Squaw Moccasins" for sale, etc.

Just more ridiculous political correctness.

"Cracker" is widely known as slang for white people. How long until we go after Nabisco and anyone else that thoughtlessly uses the word "cracker" ??

Squaw is offensive - things take time.

No, it is not ridiculous political correctness - words have meanings, and can hurt.

Just because as a straight white male you don't have a clue about discrimination doesn't make people's complaints any less valid - just shows you are boorish for not understanding, or wanting to understand.

As for the high schools - again, it takes time. 30 years ago, Pekin HS was the Chinks (Pekin, Illinois was named after Peking, China).

That's just as ridiculous as bringing up cracker.

Let's just get rid of all Indian names period. No argument about it then. Otherwise someone will target the Indians, the Chiefs, etc. next.

Maybe if CNN discusses the history of the word you'll see some similarities. The word got a lot of attention in a recent trial you may have heard about:

'Cracker' conveys history of bigotry that still resonates

http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/01/us/zimmerman-trial-cracker/index.html

It fits our discussion in this thread. It's a word that is not offensive to all people, but is to a certain group, especially when said by certain people.

Washington has been determined to be too embarrassing of a term so they will now be known simply as The Redskins.

:D

Awesome.

Redskin is not equally as offensive as the words you chose. Not even close.

What are you talking about? Is there some team named Cracker? Do you have a problem with it or something? Why would you have a problem with it, since you don't seem to be the type that would have a problem with the Washington Pastyfaces. Since you aren't the type that goes in for "ridiculous political correctness".

Lost me again.

Fun story: I remember being bummed that Sambo's wasn't Sambo's. When I was a kid. Then I grew up, and didn't care because the food was the same at Dennys or any other breakfast diner place, and I found out the book was called:

the funny thing is people still think cracker is a comparison to a saltine.

Your calling me a slave driver. Cracking my whip.

Thats offensive.

Washington odor? I find that offensiv e as I forgot to shower today.

Washington cheeseburgers? HEY! IM A VEGAN!!

Anyway, redskin is a little derogatory. Hopefully if they do change, they remain an indian, keep the same logos and colors. I love the washington logos and uniforms.

If it became the washington capitals or something, they can go hang out with the cowboys for all I care.

Plus watching the game the other night, it was cowboys and indians. Always like that matchup even as a kid.

How about the washington tribe? is tribe racist?

Not so sure about that. Times might be a changing. :)

no chance. Redskin is nowhere near that derogatory. Nothing will change my mind. The N bomb itself is the undisputed champion of racism language.

But the NFL would NOT allow a franchise to call themselves the crackers and show some white guy as the logo would they?

If they called themselves the crackers and their logo was a saltine cracker it would be a different argument.

Washington didn't take a name that was for something totally different and start using it to mean Native American, they took a word that already meant native american, and by the time they started using it there was already a history of use with it that suggested slur, and then that got worse.

I mean Jew is just a shortening of the term Jewish, lots of Jewish people refer to themselves as Jews. But you try and call an NFL team the Jews and watch the complaints, with Daniel Snyder front and center.

And it is a reference to the color of someone's skin, right?

Are we playing the obvious game? im on record saying redskin is a racist term, dont need to convince me.

Some things have been racist terms and stopped being racist over time too, just like some things that werent racist become racist.

Another example of being too entrenched in one's position. Sports Writer Rick Reilly said he refuses to just stop writing the name as others have, and said one reason why is his father in law, who's part Blackfoot Indian and says he doesn't care at all about the name.

Great, except his father in law says not true, you misunderstood me I said if its offensive to some people they should change the name, and that term IS offensive to many people.

Reilly insists he didn't misunderstand him, they've ironed it out, and he'll continue to use the name in print.

In other words I don't want to admit that my example of a Native American who doesn't mind the term wasn't correct, so I'm going to just pretend I was right.

So is the stance for eshool Reilly, "it is not offensive to some, so I will keep using it?"

Seems that is the stance those who don't see a problem with the name are taking.
