I certainly don't believe Palmer is the long-term answer at QB, but I'll believe he is a joke when he is completely ineffective with Larry Fitzgerald on the same team and field. With all due respect to Ocho, Larry Fitzgerald would be far and away the most talent WR that Carson has ever had the chance to work with.

Yeah, that might have been a bit harsh calling him a joke. I didn't mean to put him in the Skelton, DA, Max Hall class. But, I'm just not sure his decline is primarily related to the quality of his wide receivers. I think he's an improvement for us but I don't see him as the solution if it's going to cost us anything more than a 5th or 6th round pick. We have too many other holes to waste a 3rd or better on an aged QB who's game has clearly slipped.

His stats for the Raiders last year were good if you just look at it on paper. Likely good enough that it would cause our team to give up a much higher draft pick and hit decent escalators if he did the same here. Yet the Raiders were still awful.
If part of the conditions to make it a high pick have to do with making the playoffs and being successful in the playoffs than it would pay for itself. If say the only way we give up a first is if he has good stats while leading us to the SB for instance that would be well worth giving up that first for. Or if the only way we give up a 2nd for him is if he puts up good stats while leading us to at least say the second round of the playoffs than I would also say that was worth the pick we give up.

The issue simply isn't what Oakland may want as sooner or later they'll release him. At issue is whether they consummate their trade with Seattle and, most important, whether our FO wants him and Carson's willingness to come. The Cards would probably pay some small stipend to the Raiders to get him sooner rather than later.

And the Raiders are...what? The Gold Standard for evaluating and developing QB's?
No the Raiders are a bigger dump than we are, I hear they even take muffin stumps. Palmer is not the good, thirst quinching, lemoney glass of ice tea some make him out to be. He would do just fine for our tank job, but why pay that much to go 3-13? Our defense is gone, but Levi and Palmer are not only going to overcome that but they can make us relevant?

This new team loves them some youth, and Palmer isn't worth going after, you just wait and see if he shows up at your door step.

Stanton turns 29 in May but right now he's our guy. I agree with 88 I'm even typing this while sitting at my piano. The Cards are not as bad as so many seem to believe in other areas than QB. They could win with Carson.

But Palmer isn't coming to the AZ. Arians has his guy in Stanton and that's who we're going to roll with. Yet another in a long, long line of 2nd or 3rd or 4th tier QBs the Cards have tried. I'm having a seance after the draft to get the ghost of Trent Green to inhabit the body of Drew Stanton.

Personally I don't think it means squat what the Raiders want to do with Palmer means anything. That organization has flat out sucked and made every wrong decision possible since Al Davis seemed to go senile in the early 2000's. Since his death they've seemed to make even more questionable moves. I think at this point the worst organizations in football right now seem to be the Raiders and Jaguars.

The Palmer and Cinci situation seems to me to be like a Boldin and Arizona front office situation but worse. It didn't make Boldin any less of a warrior on the field. Also he didn't go public with his trade demand, someone leaked that, perhaps in the Bengals organization.

Lots of players request trades, especially on teams that at the time were a walking prison roll call, and people forget that after his request was denied, they drafted Andy Dalton, the Bengals still refused to trade him, and they made him sit out after drafting his replacement almost an entire season. If you ask me, he was thrown under the bus more by the Bengals then walked out on the team.

He requested a trade, it was leaked, they drafted his replacement, and told him to kick rocks for almost a whole season.

How that makes him a quitter is beyond me.

I think the plan is to get, groom, and keep a QB next year in the draft. The NFL has shown that 9 times out of 10, superbowl QBs were drafted very early and they don't get traded. Arians has shown that he is willing to start a rookie, and this just means we don't like the Geno's pizza rolls at all. Stanton is playing for a future back up job with the Cardinals, as long as he doesn't Skelton all over himself this year he can back up whatever rookie stud we get. We wouldn't have let Kolb walk if we planned on paying big money this year at QB is what I'm thinking. So in conclusion, I'm kinda just sippin a martini, leaning on your piano, and I'm singing beautifully about nothing in my smoking jacket.

Honestly can anybody explain to me why Carson Palmer for 2 years 12 million and maybe a 7th round pick would be a bad idea?

Are we seriously advocating because then we wouldnt be in a position to draft a top QB in 2014? Damn talk about loserville.

Bring in the guy let him compete and let the chips fall where they may. If Arians even a little bit better manging QBs and Drew Stanton with or without Palmer we should be out of the Top 5 anyway with the talent we have elsewhere.

Palmer is a stop gap for this year and IMO is 10X more likley to be successful then Drew Stanton. And there is some upside although I agree with DDawg that he is likely used up goods.

I HATED the Kurt Warner signing at the time and was dead wrong. If its low risk and at most costs a Brian Hoyer a roster spot I dont see what the big deal is. If he doesnt work out then cut him in the offseason.

People are acting like weve got something to lose here. Crazy.

Yeah, Palmer's been pretty putrid the last couple years, but beggars can't be choosers. He'd at least give us a glimmer of hope.

I agree with everything you said except why he is not coming here. I think he wants to be the backup in SF and is using us as leverage. He has stated he does not want to move his kids from the West Coast and we an easy target since he are the only team that is West Coast that needs a QB.

Yes, so when he quits again he doesn't have to move too far. He's basically demanded to be traded from 2 different teams in the last 2 years. I think the Arizona heat would make him demand a trade if we got him, let him go to frisco and be in the back up scenery like he wants. If Moore wants him, I'd be shocked, if Arians wants him I'd be afraid, this is one QB jersey the dawg will never buy.

He is demanding a trade? That is news to the entire universe. The Raiders are demanding he take a pay cut after he renegotiated twice already. He has not once said he did not want to play in Oakland this season.

I should have said that better, when a team offers you 10 million bones to play football and you say "no", than you are either looking for a trade or your a really, really, really good quarterback. ;)

If your employer asks you to take 3 pay cuts in a row and does nothing with the cost savings to improve the team...at some point, you tell them no. $10 or $10 million, doesn't matter.

I'd give a 4th rounder this year and a conditional next year dependent on playing time, completion percentage, touchdowns etc. Palmer may not be elite, even good, but he is streets better than anything on this roster, and will make the team a little more bearable to watch this year.

There isn't really anything to lose, provided that he wants to be here and still has fire in the belly. Would keep BA's track record of getting to the playoffs with a number 1 pick in the draft alive (Manning, Couch, Luck) - we can dream, can't we?

Can't go into a season hoping to improve the next year - things change and those dead certs have a way of morphing into something very different.

Why? You are in effect negotiating with yourself. Oakland has three options: pay Carson his money, send him to a team that he's willing to play for or release him.

Fair point. I believe the Raiders are not under pressure to release him, even if they trade for Flynn. Not sure though what their cap situation is. If the Cards want him and he wants to be here, then they would probably want him here next week. A trade might be the best way to make this happen.

Everyone thought Kurt Warner was done when he was with the Giants. You never know. Playing Palmer is better than playing anyone on the Cardinals roster.

Peter King wrote about the rumor in his MMQB column.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nf...palmer-kevin-kolb-monday-morning-quarterback/

Two deals feel inevitable this morning: Carson Palmer to Arizona, Matt Flynn to Oakland. They make too much sense not to happen. Sense, yes. Whether they'll solve problems in quarterback-needy places ... that's another issue. Palmer has a much better chance when it comes to raising Arizona than Flynn has to save Oakland.

Palmer to the Cardinals. It's likely Oakland gets a fourth- or fifth-round pick in return, and Palmer, 33, signs a deal commensurate with his recent performance but recognizing his chance for a revival playing for Bruce Arians and playing with Larry Fitzgerald. I understand why Palmer wouldn't take a financial haircut in Oakland: I wouldn't have either, knowing the Raiders were a short-term place and understanding if he held his ground, the Raiders might enable him to go to a place that fit him better.
A couple of things about this move that I like: Last year, I remember going to Indianapolis to write about the Colts when Arians was the interim coach. "I hate the West Coast Offense,'' Arians said. Arians wanted a big-armed quarterback stretching the defense, and it showed in Luck's numbers. In 2012, Luck had the second-longest average pass length in the league, 10.17 yards downfield. Match that with Palmer's desire to show he can be the big-armed thrower Arians needs. Believe me, Palmer chafes at the impression he doesn't have the arm he used to. In his first half-season with the Raiders, he was among the NFL's yards-per-attempt leaders, because coach Hue Jackson liked to stretch the defense.
Let's not be delusional about Palmer. You can't say he's a premier player anymore, but you also can't say he can't play. He threw for 4,018 yards, and his interception percentage (14 picks on 565 attempts, 2.5 percent) was lower than that of Drew Brees and Eli Manning. He wants to play the Arians way. I believe Arians is the best coach in the league for Palmer. I also believe Palmer wouild buy in totally to Arians' plan, and I hear he's excited about a chance in Arizona. A move would allow him to stay close to his southern California home, and to play in a system that wouldn't be a reach for his game. And Palmer would have the kind of reliable deep-threat receiver in Larry Fitzgerald that few quarterbacks have at their disposal.
Does that mean Arizona will contend? I doubt it sincerely. The leaky offensive line must be significantly better to give the immobile Palmer a chance to play well. But of all the quarterbacks on the market or in the 2013 draft, Palmer gives the Cardinals the best chance to be competitive as the fourth-best team in a suddenly very good NFC West.

Interesting I was wondering where in Cali he had a place, isn't Phx about the same distance from LA as San Fran?

I do agree Palmer is the type of QB Arians wants.
