Raiders discuss trade for McCown
posted: Thursday, April 5, 2007 | Print Entry

The Raiders have zeroed in on a veteran quarterback they would like to acquire while they ponder the possibility of drafting LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

Oakland has entered into trade negotiations with Lions backup quarterback Josh McCown, who signed with Detroit last season with the idea of being a starter, but he lost his job early to Jon Kitna. Instead of pouting and sulking, though, McCown was a model teammate to a point where he helped out when the Lions needed someone to run some wide receiver routes.

The Raiders have only Andrew Walter and Josh Booty as their main options at quarterback. McCown fits because he's had starting experience and he's mobile in the pocket. Plus, he has a strong arm for downfield throws.

"Josh signed with the Lions and wanted to play," his agent, Mike McCartney, said. "He deserves to play."

McCown is in the final year of a two-year contract and scheduled to earn $2 million this season. While other teams might be interested in considering him as a backup, McCown is definitely interested in the chance of going to the Raiders. If the Raiders acquire him, it would take the pressure off playing Russell early in the 2007 season.

Good luck to him wherever he goes. However, there is a good chance that the Lions and Raider will both have a qbotf by the end of the month so maybe he is just screwed reguardless.

Personally though, I think Walter is a capable backup and if the Raiders were to aquire McCown they would then take Calvin Johnson with the #1.

i guess that friend of mine was right last week when he said the Raiders were going to go after McCown. He'll have three of the best WR's in the league to stare down or miss when they are open in Moss,Porter, and Johnson. Robert Gallery better sharpen up his receiving skills though :D .

ESPN's John Clayton reports the Raiders have entered trade talks with the Lions concerning backup quarterback Josh McCown.

McCown has a big arm and is more mobile than Andrew Walter, but isn't regarded as a smart QB that's normally preferred in the West Coast attack coordinator Greg Knapp brought from Atlanta. Of course, Al Davis calls the shots on offense anyways. If they can swing a deal for McCown, look for the Raiders to take an early second- or third-round QB to develop.

McCown will easily outperform Andrew Walter who has been utterly worthless as a pro. Walter makes Bledsoe look mobile and Vick look smart.

Maybe. I still don't understand this affection for McCown. As a person, he is one of the nicest people you'll meet. As an NFL QB he sux. He will never be anythign better than a back-up...at best. He is Sean Salisbury without the ego...and a better personality

I'm not going to totally disagree but he has more skills than some of the QB's who have won the super bowl (insert Dilfer, etc. here). To say he flat out sux is an overstatement. A stop gap with a strong arm is a better desription.

The biggest compliment I can give McCown is he's teachable. When he first started the guy had happy feet syndrome, he corrected that, not that he became a lot better.

I wish him the best, as you pointed out he's a hell of a nice guy. Somewhat preachy. Homer Simpson "Save me Jeevus" Overall a great person.

What's the over/under on how many weeks of training camp before he gets a blanket party (Full metal Jacket style) for missing wide open receivers all the time?

I give it 3 weeks.

So the Raiders are going to pass on Leinart and Russell in successive years? If so, you can bury that team for the next three years at least.

Russell doesn't even compare to Leinart as a prospect. Leinart won two national Championships and almost won a third. He shined against top competition when the spotlight was on him. Russell never won anything. He looked good in one bowl game against a classically overmatched opponent.

Russell might do well in the NFL, but Vince Young he ain't! While I hope the Raider or others make him one of the top four picks, I don't by the hype about him. It's like kerouac has stated, "one bowl game against an overmatched opponent..." It's seems as though some people equate the bowl game to Russell vs. Quinn, instead of LSU vs. Notre Dame.

This is from Micheal Silver at SI.com:

Still, I'm skeptical enough to wonder whether Russell, who doesn't have great mobility, isn't this decade's version of Druckenmiller. And since I'm realistic enough to know that I'm not qualified to supply the answer, I spoke recently to four experts who are. All are respected NFL scouts or personnel men who preferred to remain anonymous.
What they told me, essentially, was this: Yeah, we hear you about the workout-wonder thing, and drafting a quarterback is always a risky proposition. But as far as we and everyone else in our business can tell, this guy is for real real.
"His workout dazzled everybody, but I don't think it's a novelty act," said a veteran scout for an NFC team. "He is f----- legit."
Said another NFC scout: "Every single guy in our organization who evaluated him gave a monster grade. I've never seen a guy with such a consistent mark across the board like that. He's got so much talent. He can roll away from pressure, he's accurate and he's just phenomenal throwing the ball."
When I asked specifically about Druckenmiller, this scout cut me off and said, "No, no, no, no, no! He is nowhere near a Druckenmiller, who could throw the ball through a building but was a big stiff, like a linebacker playing quarterback. And don't give me the (Byron) Leftwich comparisons; this guy's a much more accurate passer, and he can move much better.
"He should be a star, a guy who can carry a team on his back. For Al Davis, who's obsessed with throwing deep, this is the guy he's been dreaming about all these years."

I dunno --

I watched the guy single handedly beat ASU two years ago -- including a roll out under pressure, frozen rope 35 yarder to win the game on 4th down -- to a receiver that was covered pretty well

Russell has such physical skills that a team taking him is betting that if he can get the mental side of playing QB in the NFL ( granted, a huge IF) - you would have a monster QB

I think it's safe to say the Raiders will stay buried until their owner get the same treatment. Not wishing death on anyone, but they ain't ever gonna get back to the top as long a Al Davis is breathing.

Finallly -- Russell is kinda of the anti-Leinart

Russell is ranked where he is due to dominating physical skills

Leinart was known as the smartest, most NFL ready guy -- but slipped on questions on his physical skills -- arm strength, moblilty, etc

At the end of the day -- it seems far more QBs fail in the NFL because they cant master the mental part of the game --

So who does have "legitimacy" in your book?

The Sporting News, Pro Football Weekly, Lindy's, ESPN.com's Len P and Clayton (But not Mortensen), Scouts, Inc.

Generally, I like to get my real football information from a publications who's more interested in reporting stories than they are in reporting sports stories. But that's just me.

And it's hilarious that you post that quote taken totally out of context in an article that's generally skeptical about Russell as a prospect.

It wasn't taken out of context. It was posted in direct response to what Cardlogic posted. And it was the only part of the article where NFL scouts gave their opinion. Making it more valid than any sport's writers or self-proclaimed internet football guru's opinion, if you ask me.

Where do you get these magic "stories" about football with footbal information that aren't "sports stories"?

Like the sports-heavy swimsuit issues? Seriously, 85% of everything the SI publishes now is crappy puff pieces of the athlete Flavor of the Week. I read more biting sports journalism in Details or GQ. I know that I really needed that article on NBA players' Chinese tattoos. Thanks for keeping me up to date on some serious sportswriting, guys.

Hey, you can use SI as your main source for football information. Have fun with it. It was really great. In 1960.

When did I ever say I use it as my "main source of football information"?

I read info from all over the internet. If it seems reliable (like quotes from scouts) and pertains to the discussion at hand then I'm going to post it. I'm far from worried about whether it will be taken seriously because the same magazine has a swimsuit issue. :doi:

No, not Mccown.

As a Lions fan, I would rather have McCown QB'ing instead of Kitna. I think McCown with Martz's teaching could be a top-flight QB. I was disappointed when he wasn't named the starter last season. However, personally I am biased. McCown is a quality person, he spoke at my church, and is truely the best of what sports has to offer as a role model for young people. How can you not want a kid like that to succeed. I can only hope for the best for McCown and hope he finds a home in the NFL and kicks some A$$. He deserves it....just my .02 cents.
