Difference is Warner learned the timing game from Martz. Say what you will about Martz's offenses, with a smart QB he can make them see the game much better.

Trying to draw interest for the corporate NFL to a nothing massacre. Even if he is the long term answer which I doubt he will have huge growing pains this year. Top 10 pick to come next year.

I like the kid but lets see him perform at a high level for at least half the season first.

Yeah, lets not get carried away. The comparison to Warner is off a bit in my mind. Hall has moxie and wants to do well but he did not get seasoned like Warner did in a fast paced league like the Arena game and playing time in NFL Europe. Hall has Mountain West experience which is to say he passed alot at BYU so you can see that he can throw the ball but that does not mean that he has all of what Kurt brought to the table. I would love to see him be our Qb for the next 5 or so years however. What a great story it would be if he can rally this team and win in front of the home crowd. I am ready for that but think it is a long shot.

I just read that,
I hope but i disagree with the pressure part King describes,
Max Hall has everything to gain and nothing to lose!

I liked the one play at a time philosphy but Kurt Warner He is not, AFL had alot to do with Kurts success.

I have Matt leinart garded as a borderliner elite "90" QB as an AZ Card in this system, but will never really know now will we?

I have Hall graded in a slot from 60-80 cause were about to find out.

I stll have Skelton graded a "for sure " higher than hall because of really elite measurables according to predraft sports science show.

DA is at 70 back up borderline worse starter in the NFL, I got something right.

There's nothing wrong with that either. Hall is probably not going to look good early on, but we have to see how he develops as the year goes on. If he's looking like the real deal by season's end, but we wind up with 4 wins, that can actually be a good thing as we'll have high draft status and can bring in some quality players in the draft.

We're going to have losing seasons from time to time, and I surely don't like to lose, but when rebuilding sometimes these are gifts in disguise.

Late in the first half of the final preseason game against Washington, Hall was driving the Cardinals. On one play, he missed an open receiver, the check-down receiver, in his progression. And on another play, Hall took a big hit trying to get a couple of extra yards, instead of going down and protecting himself. When he came over for the two-minute warning, Hall got an earful from coach Ken Whisenhunt.

"Look, you can't miss that checkdown!'' Whisenhunt yelled. "And you can't take a big hit like that! Think out there!''

Hall fired back at him: "OK, it happened! I screwed up! Fine! Let's move on!''

"You know who that reminds me of?'' Whisenhunt said to me over the phone.

"Kurt Warner,'' I said.

"Kurt Warner, that's right,'' he said."

Kurt Warner, doing color for the Saints-Cardinals game on Sunday in a delicious bit of TV gerrymandering, will stand and shake hands with the man he used to be. And Max Hall, probably, will blush a little bit.

"Max Hall is Kurt Warner 12 years ago,'' Warner told me Thursday night from Phoenix.

May the Cards be so lucky.

Kid does have some leadership skills and some major maturity for a rookie.

Level headed observation, what the hell did we expect when Warner retired? The QB in all of professional sports can make or break their team, we don't replace a future HOF and expect to tread over the rest of the NFC West, even if they do stink.

I'm going to relish the fact we may have a QB of the future while still retaining hope that the playoffs are not out of reach, that's the benefit of playing in a weak division and having a good coaching staff.

I'm confused how people can think the arena league can prepare a QB for the NFL better than playing D1 college football can? How many QB's from the Arena league have even stuck on an NFL roster let alone be a star, Warner was very much the outlier in that regard.

Arena league is a totally different game, different size field, different rules, different everything. It helped Kurt because he got to throw the ball over and over and develop confidence, but he succeeded in the NFL because he had talent. People forget Green Bay wanted to keep Kurt, they just didn't have the numbers to do so at that time.

I agree with what Pariah said playing for Martz helped Kurt a lot, Kurt has told that story repeatedly Martz made Kurt become a disciplined QB, how to hold the ball how to release it, how many steps etc.

The very same stuff Whiz was doing with Leinart that confused him so much.

We'll see if it's the same with Hall but you get the impression the reason they like Hall so much is that he picks that stuff up quicker than just about any other QB Whiz has worked with?

Saying he'll be another Warner is complete guesswork, but I don't know that not playing in the AFL really matters. Grieb was a superstar in that league for years with the Sabercats, he couldn't get past tryouts with NFL teams, let alone get signed and survive OTA's training camp and preseason like Hall did.

If playing in the Arena League was really beneficial for QBs it would have become the NFL minors long ago.

I'vev gotta feeling that the main reason why King gives so much love to Hall is that as he is the only one that believes in him at the moment he can shout and rave about his player recognition skills in the very unlikely scenario that Hall becomes a good quarterback.

So far in Halls short career he has made the most with his opertunity. I am not going to compair him to great QBs.

I do however think he has shown everything you want in your leader. Fearless, confident, smart, accurate, fast release, mobile.

To think he going to light it up is crazy. But I see no reason why he cannot move the chains and try to limit mistakes.

If nothing else he will be much funner to watch than DA!

Russ I am pulling like all heck that the kid makes it...BUT I think you are being generous in even saying it is complete guesswork.

Well....according to King he possess all of the mental aspects of the game like command, fearlessness and intelligence that KW had. I agree with him in that regard. The difference is he does not have the experience under his belt. Like Kurt, he came from a relatively small school (even though BYU was ranked while Hall was there). But the fact remains as a QB, he still needs to adapt to the much more elevated talent and scheme of the game.

IMO, it is not fair to put the pitchfork in him only because he is an UDFA. Admire the fact that he went from camp fodder to 2nd string in 4 weeks and purged our former 1st round QB selection from the team. The kid has grit and an insatiable appetite for success. Undeniably. Let's see if he can translate that onto the field.

Warner said it helped him

It probably did the point is to my knowledge he is the ONLY guy to come out of that league and have any success in the NFL. I suspect Warner would have been good if he played in the AFL or not, the main thing is he had to get a chance in order to succeed. Green Bay liked him but numbers forced them to let him go. If he'd never been given another chance, we would have never seen Kurt Warner. He got lucky to get a chance and that's where AFL and Europe helped him.

Hall got lucky in that his chance came on a team that just lost Warner and realized Leinart wasn't the guy, and they were willing to give Hall a chance.

If he makes good on that chance is anybody's guess. I just don't think not playing in the AFL etc is going to hurt him, he's old for a rookie, he threw the ball a ton at BYU, he took some bad teams to some great success(BYU is HORRIBLE this year without Max). If he's going to sink or swim now it's really on him, I don't think he needed another league to bring that out of him or to get the opportunity, he's got that chance right now.

I am as high on him as anybody on this board, I don't think he's going to be another Warner. We're talking HOF for Kurt.

I do think he can succeed, if that means starter or solid backup I don't know.

There is a HUGE difference between BYU and Northern Iowa though. And Kurt only started one year in college, Hall started for 3, he is the alltime wins leader at QB for BYU. He played LOTS more football than Kurt did before Kurt got his chance with the AFL.

Kurt was in Green Bay when they had Favre, Brunell and Detmer in front of him. That's why he didn't get the shot. Mariucci was the QB coach, he says he actually loved Kurt, thought he had more talent than Detmer even, but "he wasn't ready, he hadn't played enough."

Max has. If Max fails it'll be because of other things besides just not playing enough. Kurt didn't play against Oklahoma and some of the other talented schools with NFL prospects like Hall did, it was a much bigger jump for Kurt than it was for Max. And let's be honest, Max wouldn't have made that Green Bay roster either he wouldn't have beaten those 3 out. He got the right team to give him that chance.
