I thought Johnson played pretty well last year as well. Rarely out of position in coverage, and he tackled well.

Who took 1st team reps at RT?
You say Ryan Williams DID take part in full contact drills? I thought they were pulling him back.

Thanks for the updates Chris. Just what an out of towner needs to get into the season. Saw a portion of the NFL network coverage. Unfortunately it was the part that showed both of Kolb's interceptions.
One of the NFL Network announcers made a valid point on preseason. If one or two players make a mistake on D somebody can still break through and make a play/sack to save the play. On offense a mistake by one player most likely will ruin the play. It will take some time for the offense. I am as nervous about our QB situation as anyone but will remain hopeful....

Count me as a third person that thought that Johnson played well last year. Like you I thought he was always in position and tackled well.
I don't know what these guys are thinking who say he is one step from being out of the league.

I was there Friday and Saturday. Near the end of Friday's practice, I saw Schofield level one of the backup RBs on a sweep. No idea who, it was a halfback with a # in the 40s.
Williams did a few light things on Friday, but didn't wear pads. Today he did. Looked good. I actually think he's the starter if he stays healthy. That, and maybe its just me, but most RBs have insanely huge calf muscles, and Beanie looks like he has very small, thin lower legs. But maybe that's just me.

My take from the last couple days at camp:
QBs:
The second half the scrimmage seemed to be about the QBs, they both got about equal time and towards the end, Whiz really started mixing them up. He would swap them in and out ever couple plays.mthey both had reps with first team and second team.
Kolb- clearly plays with a lot more accuracy than Skelton. He fit the ball into a couple nice places to Floyd and some others on the sideline. Outside of that, he was staring down recievers, threw awful picks to the second team, and flushed the pocket a couple times to his right like usual. I think we was making an effort to step up in the pocket however. The fans clearly want skelton, they booed Kolb pretty heavily once.
Skelton - i know people say it all the time but he really does look the part. Hes just massive, commands attention, is a lot louder than Kolb, and has a nice swagger. I think he may see the field a little better and was reall shooting for the big risky play a few times. He just really struggles with accuracy, he had larry on a go route wide open that he overthrew. I just dont know if you can fix a QBs accuracy to a point.
In all fairness, neither of them really missed wide open recievers, there wasnt a lot of open recievers from my perspective.

Man he is big. He is really big. His upper body is huge, his legs are sort of thin but i was really surprised at how big he was.

This guy walks around like a pro bowler now. I dont know if its a good thing or a bad thing but hes definitley very confident. He was messing around trying to field punts behind his back. He seems to have the respect of adrian wilson back there though. Also, his legs are huge, i can see why hes so fast. His legs are bigger than anyone in that secondary.

Its pretty amazing hes not 100% because he was sure cutting like it. He wasnt scared. Like somebody else said, he broke away on one play and celebrated a bit. I dont have a problem with it - good for him. Adrian wilson blew him up the next play.
Housler
Looks like a big reciever, similar size to floyd. He looks like he may have some value. He made a few plays.
Heap
Looks like a corpse. Love the guy, but he doesnt move well to me.

Love the reports. Great, great stuff guys. Yeah, I think it's a little early to read too much into the QB situation and to start going crazy. Sure, Skelton didn't complete much, but give him time. Yeah, Kolb made some bad choices, it sounds, but it's still early. We still know nothing about how this will all pan out. As I like to say, 'Chill, Win-stahn!'

I hate to sound like thesmel too, but when I was a child, Leroy Kelly was the Browns RB them and the Steelers that won like 4 Super Bowls never started out training camp expecting to be good at the forward pass.
Now I know times have changed and Blah Blah Blah, but they were fundementally drilled on core bread and butter running plays. They were on automatic pilot fundementally , Grimms Champion Redskins did very few plays very well.
If we want to get the best out of our HOF WR and rookie 13th overall, We need to master 3 plays regardless of the Qb and even the RB. I could care less if we attempt a forward pass in the HOF game.
Our system is fundementally flawed regardless of the players, I'm tryig my level best not to call Coach Whisehunt poisonous names again, but the penalties, undiciplined breakdowns, blown assignments on more than 50% of the offensive snaps are his baby to resolve. It is too many times in a row to blame the players.
We don't have Kurt Warner to bail out our 1 step forward 3 step back high risk- big play offense. We have less high percentage pass plays called than when Kurt made decisions his 3rd and 4th reads in 4 and 5 receiver sets.
whiz is taking his time to get back to the coach we hired. But he better do so this year, it is his choice and his responsibility.

Thanks for the excellent reports! Missed the live broadcast on NFLN, but caught the Solomon Wilcox interview with Larry Fitzgerald afterward. You could not miss his disappointment with the offense's performance. I have rarely seen him so down. It isn't time to panic yet, but there may be some reason for concern if I'm reading him right.

In Kent Somers' story in today's Republic, he likened the offense/defense to going on a trip with a large family. You can't please everybody. Well in NY, and I'm not sure if the Giants are still doing it, they used to play first team offense against second team defense. In that way BOTH could come away feeling good about themselves. Also, it opened the door for a couple of second teamers to stand out. Just a thought.

Great job Chris - I watched the NFLN coverage. Take-aways:
- It probably doesn't mean much but the drills looked kind of shaggy (i.e. not crisp).
- Casserly mentioned Potter as a sleeper (& at RT).
- Jefferson's breakup of pass to Floyd is worth mentioning.
- Ditto the pick by Walker and nice play by Bethel. (If Bethel continues to make plays like that, I think he makes the final 53).
- It's still way to early to figure out Kolb v. Skelton.
- Because their actions are so visible, the skilled position players tend to get over-covered by the media (& linemen on both O and D under-covered)
- Yesterday represented the first decent media coverage of the Cards since we were in the Super Bowl .
- UPDATE - Rewatching tape - Everytime I saw Lindley throw, he seemed "scrunched up" around the shoulders - like he was steering the ball instead of throwing it (perhaps an overreaction to criticism that he lacks "touch?"). All I know is that this seemed to cause him to lose 2 - 3 inches off the top of his release point and made it even more difficut for him to be accurate.
- Interesting commentary by an off-camera dude (sounded like Lombardi) who pointed out that an unwritten rule of Bill Walsh's Niners org was that "you built the rest of your team first" before you worried about strengthening the WR position and that he felt that, by drafting Floyd, the Cards violated that basic principle (considering the state of our OL - i.e. number of sacks, weak rushing numbers, injuries to Kolb etc). When asked whether or not he felt everything in most organizations (specifically the Cardinals) flowed from the quality of their OL, he answered in the affirmative. While I'm leery of "rules" that can never be broken and tend to get snippy over the certitude that underlies a lot of the stuff coming out of the mouths of NFL fans and commentators - I have to concede that the one thing that's kept me up at night over the years has been the play of our OL. (This doesn't make me right - & there's been a lot of worthwhile counter-arguments about improved play by Levi late in the season, etc. etc. - but it's the single biggest thing I continue to worry about).

One of the funniest posts in ASFN history was by Section 11 after a game at SDS in the halftime meet thread where he wrote: "I introduced myself to Kooter for the 14th time".
KOC and Kooter looked like they were ready to fight you until after a couple of minutes it dawned on them who you were. Spent many an interesting halftime drinking beer with Kooter.
