the Miami game. On the endzone INT the defender, who made the interception, CLEARLY shoved Fitz out of bounds. If the Replacements were still reffing there is NO WAY they let a PI in the endzone go uncalled, after what happened last Monday. And the pass from KK was probably a good one and my money would have been on Fitz to make the catch.

What's really amazing to me is the lack of attention the PI got. Didn't look like a tough call to make.

Thats because Kolb was out of the pocket and Fitz was close if not within the 5yrds so no PI was called. Even Fitz later stated it was the right non-call...

Simple. It wasn't a PI under the rules. When the QB is out of the pocket the DB can shove a player out of the way and even out of bounds.

The regular refs didn't cost us anything. Serious victim mentality going on here.

Fitz made the rule clear...even on a designed rollout, the rules change.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/76631/why-a-pivotal-play-didnt-produce-penalty

"If the quarterback leaves the pocket area with the ball in his possession, the restrictions on illegal contact and illegal cut block both end, but the restriction on defensive holding remains in effect," the rulebook states.

Now, they blew a HUGE call on Toler, flagging him for PI when the receiver wrapped his head up and flagrantly interfered with him. Should have been offensive PI.

Fitz agreed with the rule; you just don't understand it.

If anything, Miami should've gotten the ball at the one yard line; there's no way that the ball was still in the end zone when he went out of bounds. That being said, I'm not familiar with the touchback rule there, either.

Wow I never knew that rule before that's gotta be fairly new because I sure don't recall ever hearing that one?

I guess I'm still confused why you can't hold the guy but you can push him?

To further overthink it, what if Fitz pushes Smith instead is that a penalty?

as mush as I know
this situation usually favors the Def

"a defensive back is allowed any sort of contact within the 5 yard bump zone except for holding the receiver"

this is different in College or High School

true but you get my drift. If the contact rules go out the window where a DB can push a WR out of bounds, couldn't the WR push the DB? Technically unless it's in the back he would be blocking since the QB is out of the pocket with the ball and thus a runner.

Interesting rule twist.

but yeah I am pretty sure if Fitz pushes Smith out of bounds and catches a TD pass it's going to be called.

My forum super-power is to make short comments that detract from the overall thread... I thought you knew that?

I believe that is true until the pass is in the air. At that point, it is back to standard PI rules.

That said, I'm not 100% certain if the push was before the pass or after. I thought it was while it was in the air, but I'm not certain on that either.

So Fitz could've shoved the DB out of the way?
IMO there is no difference...but knowing how the NFL rules contradict each other I'm sure he can't. :D

yeah the rule that was quoted here says the QB has to be in possession of the ball so that means the pass can't be in the air so you're 100% right there.

And I have no idea if Kolb had thrown it or not when the push happened.

I'm just curious same scenario Kolb still with ball, Fitz pushes DB out are they still going to call nothing?

My guess is the rule is one way for the defense not for the offense.

But then I didn't know there was such a rule until today so I'm completely guessing.

If you could, pick plays should be run all the time. Just have the QB roll, and have the inside WR block the CB over the outside one. In other, basically what we did on Fitz's TD. :D

I thought Kolb was in the throwing motion but hadn't released the ball while Fitz was pushed... It was close...

When the DB pushed Fitz, Kolb hadn't thrown yet. I watched the play again.

bump-and-run:
a technique used by pass defenders, where they hit a receiver once within 5 yards (1 yard in college) of the line of scrimmage to slow him down, and then follow him to prevent him from catching a pass.

What I know that receiver can push back but CAN'T initiate the contact.
So if the DB is trying to distrupt the receiver, the receiver can push back to get on his route. But if the DB establishes his position obstructing the receiver route, NO, the receiver can't push.

well I'm guessing it's related to blocking rules about blocking downfield before a screen is thrown etc.

But again rule is totally foreign to me I was as mad as anybody that it wasn't called, now I know why

To me it still makes zero sense. IMO there isn't any difference in Smith doing or Fitz doing it...one guy should be allowed to do the same as the other is the same circumstances. :bang:

Is everything
Regardless, it should have been overturned and ruled incomplete. The defender did not have full control of the ball before it hit the ground. I was surprised the call stood.
