We are enjoying the show. Still too early to tell if it has any staying power.

For me it keeps getting better each week and is what I thought it would be. When the google guy saw the PC parts and then explained why he was so upset was cool. I also like how the no power story is really a side story to the Revolution against the militia. I also like how they are starting to devleop the characters and back story.

Also, it was pretty cool when the iPod came on and the British lady saw her kids.

Better episode last night - more of the backstory

As the story builds, I am liking it more and more.

I am a little bummed the British lady died, I wanted to see her reunited with her kids.

episodes three and four were good.

I feel like I'm watching 'Lost' all over again. Not that it is the same story but it is filmed the same way, Plot layout is identical, dialog isn't much different, and what you think is a main character gets axed in the first 4 episodes...

The girl is killing the show for me I like everyone else but I want to fast forward through her scenes. Like the way the story is setting up though.

I'm glad to read that you guys are saying it's getting better. We just watched the 1st episode and I was underwhelmed. Too made-for-TV-like. I'm not sure how Lost did it, but it always seemed more movie-like.

Ill say it here and now: I know NOTHING about this show besides what I saw in the trailer.

With that said:

I assume the show is about the world losing electricity or something? And theres panic and how will we survive and etc.

Thats such a shallow American show.

No electricity, we will all die!

They forget that more than half the world has never interacted with any sort of electrical device (or running water for some) and yet they are doing just fine.

Nope this show is about people who have already transitioned, no panic. They are just searching for a way to turn it back on or find out why it went out.

Thats a little better.

But still. No electricity is not the end of the world. Dumb premise.

Might as well make a show about the global bacon shortage. Now thats panic.

Bodha, every person who has studied the use and effects of an EMP disagrees with you. Casualty estimates, within the first year, are estimated to be 200 million plus.

The issue isn't that people don't know (or more appropriately relearn) how to live with electricity. The issue is that almost everything we need to live is transported to is using electricity.

I'm not sure about other cities' infrastructure, but in Vegas, we would run out of water in 24 hours (some places sooner) without electricity.

No more food could be imported for consumption without trucks and trains. Even if the EMP didn't affect them, the petrochemical refineries wouldn't be able to function without power. When the fuel runs out, the goods stop flowing. Most people couldn't grow a chia pet, much less enough food (if they had the land) to feed themselves or their families. Most stores keep between 1 to 3 days worth of goods on the shelf. Not enough to go around for everyone.

Further, modern farming is dependent upon chemistry (fertilizer and insecticides) and heavy farm equipment, which is all based on electricity.

This is before we have even discussed social unrest.

No no, I totally get that. The United States as we know it would be totally screwed.

I was more focused on the commentary that its pathetic that society as a whole would not be able to function without the luxury of technology.

We as a people are so dependent, that the lack of something thats only existed for 133 years can lead to our downfall. Humankind has been around for tens of thousands of years. We are by nature hunter-gatherers. Yet alot of people would quickly die of hunger and exposure because they dont have survival skills. And its even sadder to call them "Survival" skills. Millions of people on this earth call those skills simple day by day living.

See what I mean. You are 100% right. The US and most everyone in it would be so SOL. And thats just embarassing as a nation.

Not really. Pretty much every developed nation would be screwed as well. Oh, and those that are living without electricity and many of the 'luxuries' that go with it, as you put it, are already screwed now.

It is not as simple as lack of survival skills. Technology, and electricity in particular, has allowed humanity to greatly exceed the carrying capacity of this planet. 130 years ago the population was around 1.5B, now it is over 7B and rising exponentially. This would not be possible without technology. People would die not because they lack survival skills but simply because the environment cannot support that many people.

Not the end of the world. End of the 1st World, specifically America. It would, in fact, totally deconstruct civility as we know it.

The show's much better 5 shows in. I couldn't anticipate the improvement for the horrific first episode, but it's on an upward climb. Character development is stronger.

Still just OK for me, but waiting for more digging.

Why do you say that?

We're talking about living here. I know life without your iphone isnt an extistance you ever want to face, but you dont need it to live. You need food, clean air, water and shelter.

Have you ever seen Apacalypto? Besides being attacked, would you say their little civilization was "screwed"?

You're overstating things. Because 7B people wouldnt instantly suffer from an event like this.

Currently 1 in 5, or approx a quarter of the earths population, already lives without electricity or any sort of technology. And so theres a portion whos already supporting themselves. They dont rely on trains and farms and someone else to bring them their food.

So cut it down to about 4B.

and even in that situation, youre probably still right. Its not that the earth couldnt sustain them, its that those people dont know how to sustain themselves off of the earth. Theres millions of miles of uninhabited land that is chalk full of everything a person needs to survive. Cities exist because of technology and dependence. If I didnt have to live amongst 5 million other people, I wouldnt. Look at Canada. Something like 80% of their population lives within 200 miles of the US border. And they have all that land. Same goes for Russia. We absolutely have the space for people to spread out and so they arent sucking up limited resources in 1 place.

Theres game just about anywhere you go. And it will thrive with the lack of tech control (see I am Legend, except not as dramatic).

Millions of people currently have vegetable gardens in their backyards.

We got along just fine before 1879. 4B (or even 7B) people COULD survive and live fine. But they wouldnt because they dont know how.

Yep, and a majority of the Third World unfortunates that live without electricity struggle to find food, don't have steady supplies of potable water, and have patchwork shelter, if any at all. So, those in the Third World are already largely living this nightmare.

As for the First World nations, sure, maybe about 1 or 2 percent have the knowledge and equipment needed to survive without modern technology. We'd have deaths in the billions worldwide if this scenario should ever happen.

This has nothing to do with iphones, luxuries, or any of that stuff--nice try at deflection. It has to do with the collapse of global infrastructure and the absence of basic survival skills in almost the entirety of the First World population.

Again, your overstating their struggles.

You sound like us Americans in the colonial days trying to help the indians. Those poor savages. How will they survive?

But for those millions who do struggle to find food and water, why do you think that is?

Maybe...because theres millions of people in a concentrated area vying after limited resources?

If your hungry, in the 3rd world, you dont go towards other people. You go away from them. But they are also dependent on society for food, water, shelter, which is why they live in cities in the first place.

IVE BEEN SAYING THAT THIS WHOLE TIME
