Will Shipp and Emmitt last in Green's system? If you look at his backs in Minny,he had Robert Smith and Bennett. Both of those guys are burners that could take the ball in from anywhere on the field.Shipp and Smith don't fit that mold.Steven Jackson and the JOnes boys aren't really burners so i don't think they would be considered at #3.Jones from Vtech is probably the fastest of the bunch.Damien Andersn could fill a role but i'd look for a mid round pick to maybe be used on a speed back.

What he really values is a RB he can use out of the backfield as a receiver as well, those guys tend to be fast. When they drafted Bennett that was the question, is he a good enough receiver to play for Dennis Green? Shipp made his mark with us doing just that before getting the regular job. So no he's not nearly as fast as Smith or Bennett, but I do think he can play for Green because he's a good receiver, and I think whoever is the QB will benefit greatly from an offense that uses it's RB's more as receivers, like say how we used Emmitt against Minnesota in the finale.

Wood said in his intro to the media that he would tailor his offense to fit the talent on the club.

I do think, though, that there will be more emphasis on getting our RB's to catch better out of the backfield.

I would hope so, Marcel caught only 30 balls this year, 38 the prior year despite starting 5 more games. and his YPC number went from 10.9 to 6.1, Sullivan had no clue how to use Shipp. I would expect a lot more catches from Shipp this year, if Emmitt is back he'll be used to rest Shipp, and of course he too can catch the ball but had only 14 this year.

I'm pretty confident that Green will get a LOT more out of the same players, if we can solve the speed WR issue, and get more consistent OL and QB play I wouldn't be surprised to see us scoring 20-25 PPG by midseason when people really get Green's system. Of course I thought this years team had that potential and we didn't even come close.

The defense is where Green really needs to make solid hires, that's why Solomon as DB coach scares me.

I might be the only one on this board who would love to draft Kevin Jones.

He could be that gamebreaking back that this offense needs.

if Emmitt is back he'll be used to rest Shipp,
Unless Marcel becomes more adept at picking up blitzes on passing downs, Emmitt remains invaluable back there protecting the QB.

Regarding Krang's comment about Kevin Jones, I don't put him in the same category as Ricky Williams or Deuce McAllister (i.e. worthy of a #3) and think we have more pressing needs.

But if we could use him to extort picks from Washington (you've got to figure Gibbs wants to fill the Davis void with another big Riggins type back), trading down from 3 to 5 wouldn't be such a terrible thing.

(Assuming, of course, that we don't rate Manning, Roethlisberger or Taylor that highly - a very huge IF).

I think we will see less of Anderson and more of Scobey. Scobey and Anderson are on the same field when it comes to talent(speed, agility, ect.) but Scobey has better hands. IMO Green will want to utilize him more then Anderson.

I think we could make a play for Corey Dillon, he's a jerk but a talented one, and Green has a history of being able to get along with such types. Cincy must realize he'll never fetch full value on the trade market because of his reputation, so I doubt we'd have to give up the #3 pick for him.

I think that Steven Jackson is the best RB in the draft, but I wouldn't take him at 3, you might get Cadillac Williams in round 2 and get a very good RB. I happen to think Shipp is a much better player than we saw this year, I just don't think Sullivan had any idea how to use a RB.

I have a different opinion of the speed on the RBs you mentioned. The analysis on the above noted site, disagrees also.

I would be elated if any one of those backs came to the Cards.

Section 11 would trade the 2nd rounder, 3rd rounder, and his first-born child for Willis McGahee.

I'd like us to see us take Joe in a later round. Nothing better than a RB hitting the hole hard and quick, hell, even having a RB that can find the hole would be nice or maybe having a line that can create a decent hole !!! The Cards just don't seem to create enough holes . What will it take for the Cards to get more holes ? The RB needs a hole , it's his home, get the RB in the hole!!

They ought to take him just to give Dave Pasch a hard time.

he's pretty good but nothing special and had a lot of injuries. I seem to recall he was a bit of a fumbler too, I haven't heard him called Joe much of late, they seem to love to say his name, just like it's spelled!

he had a great year this year but didn't play at all the last 2 years, as the report said injuries and grades. He might be a solid pick later on in the draft but then he's a good athlete so he could be one of those guys who works out well and shoots up the charts. I guess I'm not sure how a guy who missed 2 full years showed "resilience" but then it wasn't just injuries.

The guy at Cal I would love to get besides Rodgers is Safety Joe Manigo, college LB pro safety. Not a great player but he has the best hair in college football.

One position in the draft that can make an immediate impact is a running back. They do not need a lot of experience since most of what they bring to the table is not taught but comes with them. You can usually get a good RB in 3rd or 4th round and some of them may have been used as blocking backs in college or hidden behind a star back on their college team.

I know I will sound like a broken record on this one, but.....

If he goes past the 3rd round , Jason Gaethers of U of Miami, will shock people. As big as Steven Jackson with super speed. His career was so messed up at the U. Started off as a non qualifier. Running back in same class as Clinton Portis, Willis Mcgahee, James Jackson, Najeh Davenport, Frank Gore, Jarret Payton. Finally qualified and was moved to WR. When Portis came out he went back to RB. This happened rest of career. Flip flopping wherever they needed him. Great hands and speed.

Here's his bio.

Once he hits the combine, he will jump up the board.

i'd do a 2nd rounder, a fifth rounder, and section 11's first-born for mcgahee.

Actually, it's a conditional first-born child. Sec 11 can keep him if he can guess the name of the Buffalo GM after Donohoe is fired.

Before every draft, the temptation is to drool over the star RB of that draft crop.

I accept the reasoning that (a) our backs might not perfectly fit Wood's offensive scheme and (b) we might need some RB depth in front of or behind Scobey (if Damien won't be back).

But we have bigger needs on this football team. And this year's talent-pool doesn't have McGahey or McAllister-quality near the top.

I think this is one of those years where you hope to find value like Michael Pittman when you draft in the 4th round - and then leap on that opportunity if it's there.

Forget needs. Look at the Ozzie Newsome approach, best available player regardless of position...

You know, Duce McAllister was selected 23rd overall. That might be an all-time great draft value. One of the three "first-round" running backs are expected to drop into the second. If we want one, we can get him, but I prefer to wait a season and see if Shipp can handle the load (I don't think that he can, frankly).

I disagree, respectfully. Kevin Jones is every bit as good as those two coming out of college, which is why he is rated as a top five pick by most draftniks.

Steven Jackson is also right up there with Jones, and it's really a matter of preference on who is better. Jones is speedier, while Jackson is a tad bigger, stronger.

McGahee hasn't proven anything in the NFL yet. I thought the Bills were pretty stupid taking him in the first round, considering the fact that they already have a very good back in Travis Henry. Clearly, the Bills could've used one more wideout...luckily they didn't catch the Boldin fever and draft him at #25. :p
