I would guess that Goodell would suspend the new coach if they did that. I think the whole point is this is supposed to be a HUGE deterrent so nobody else does this.
Well, they're not going to be w/o a coach...someone is going to be the new coach.

I think the suspension for Payton was a lesson for HIM--just like Williams suspension is one that follows the man, and isn't levied on the team. The draft picks they lost are the TEAM's penalty.

Personally, I thought the penalties were kind of light. Without knowing the details, Loomis and Payton should have gotten about double what they received and then it would have been fair.

I don't know. Loomis is just a GM and he is lossing 500k, that is a pretty huge hit for him. Payton is going to lose, what around 7 mill in pay, that to is a pretty big hit.

IMO, it was pretty steep and justified.

seriously... if the saints are just SCREWED, and Brees threatens a hold-out or just flat out WANTS out, with what they just lost, I'd offer our first round pick and next year's second to try and pull him out of there. They're already up against the cap and this is a move that could bring about a meltdown. Wouldn't hurt to try and take advantage here.

It's being reported to be about 8 million.

I'd give up the Cards entire draft, plus next years 1 ;)

Good for Goodell! Only quibble is I would have taken a first & second round draft pick instead of 2 seconds. Totally agree with the indefinite suspension of Gregg Williams in light of his lying about it. The question is what do the Rams do now? How can they NOT fire the guy?

I don't understand why Loomis wasn't fired weeks ago. The owner told him to stop any bounty system and he said he would. Then Loomis just blew Benson off and allowed the bounties to continue.

How you can lie right to the owner's face and keep your job is beyond me.

Awesome. Pretty much what I expected except I thought Payton's and Loomis' penalties would have been vice versa. Loomis got off very light IMO. I really don't think Brees plays another down for the Saints and if he does I think this is his last year.

I guess that i should have been more detailed in my statement. With the extended period of time (3 years) that it occurred and then covering up problem when confronted in my mind justifies longer than the hit they took. You could justify in my mind the penalty for Payton being as long as the policy existed and for Loomis as long as he knew about the bounty program and tolerated it. Personally, the team may have gotten hit too hard since the owner did not sanction this and told them to cease when he found out.

One more thing. I think that this would have to scare the bejezuz out of Washington because I thought I remembered that they were being investigated for this also.

Watch out for Tony Dungy, the league's designated "good guy" ,to step in as interim coach. Bet on it.

I think a fair penalty is to reimburse teams who were harmed by the bounties.

So in this case the NFL should award Drew Brees to the Cardinals since a bounty hit ended Warner's career.

Yeah but I don't think they'd just let the saints fire Payton and then have a whole new staff and no suspensions.

I think the intent is to really make it unlikely someone ever does this again.

But yeah obviously someone will have to coach the team.

My first thought.

Someone get Rod Graves on the phone with Mickey Loomis. 2 first rounders, a 2nd and Skeleton should get this done.

Oh WAIT! We just paid Kolb 7 million. FML
