Willis did have another tough outting but you do gotta like that he is still on the bench supporting his teammates. Pedro Martinez would of left the ballpark.

Koplove pitched a perfect 8th inning and Brenly takes him out. Shea misjudges a popup foul ball and the next pitch is hit for a home run. 4-3 with a Marlin on second and one out, bottom of the 9th.

Valverde gets out of the jam and the Diamondbacks win 4-3! More good news, the Dodgers and Padres loss today.

Valverde pulls through and notches the save, leaving the tying run stranded at second base....I guess nothing is easy for this team!! Regardless, a much needed win, and hopefully Webb can get a split for us tomorrow afternoon.

Whats truly amazing is that even though the Dbacks have played poorly, they are still only 6½ games out of 1st place in the NL West. They are still very much in this race

Go figure

Gnats will be flying back from Puerto Rico to greet us. Another rain-out and they could be pretty well-rested... hope they have to fit in a make-up double-header tomorrow. :D

Horrible game. Why would Brenly waste Koplove in a game like this? Stupid.

Giants were off todya (Mon.) so they were probably home last night assuming the weather didn;t hold them back.

They will be well rested...although the Dbacks seemed to be resting today as well.

This thread is getting too long.

Fossum gives up a 2-run home run to Alfonso and it's already 2-0 Giants.

Gonzo strikes out in the 9th and gets ejected from the game because he thought the pitch was a ball. Frustrations are setting in. How much more can this team take before a change is made?

The frustration is based on the horrible umpiring of this game and to be quite honest I can't say I blame them for it. This isn't frustration at Brenly

Does Cintron have a brain? What the h*ll is he trying to get to third with one out and the tying run coming up. Of course Finley gets a hit.

Diamondbacks lose to the Giants. They sure have the D-Backs number.

Umpires are human. You have to earn their respect.

If a team is performing like losers, the umps are going to treat them that way.

Not working opposing pitchers . . . swinging outside the strike zone . . . trying to pull outside pitches . . . you pay the price.

The D'backs have no one to blame, at this time, but themselves.

Damn, I didn't know NBA officials were moonlighting...

Unintentional or not, if umps gear their calls to a teams' W/L record, baseball is in much worse shape than we thought! They have historically called a tighter strike zone on rookie pitchers, but calls out on the field should be equitable towards all. How can an ump standing out at 2nd base miss a fans' glove hanging over the fence - oh wait, we suck right now, so it gets overlooked, right? I agree that badgering the umps will get a team nowhere, but I truly hope they don't screw a team simply because they are losing.

On the other hand, some umps are plain horrible (CB Bucknor, Angel Hernandez, Joe West & Laz Diaz come to mind), and it wouldn't matter if we were undefeated or not to get a bad call or crappy strike zone!

Indy, I didn't mean to make reference to W-L record or calls out on the field. By 'losers', I was actually referring to lack of discipline or a plan, as opposed to a team's W-L record.

The examples I mentioned -- not working opposing pitchers . . . swinging outside the strike zone . . . trying to pull outside pitches -- referred to batter after batter.

If a hitter doesn't respect the strike zone, neither will the ump when that batter is up. Especially if it occurs throughout the lineup.

I should hope that W-L record or calls on defense are not affected.

But whether it's a hitter being called out on a pitch outside the strike zone, because that's where he's been swinging . . . or a Randy Johnson sometimes not getting the inside strike when he should . . . or getting the inside strike when he shouldn't . . . and we've seen both . . . the umpires' calls are going to reflect the discipline of the player many times.

That's human nature.

From someone who has umpired a few games I agree with this. Its a tough job that trust me you don't want. There are mistakes made (usually subtle) but when a big mistake is made like giving a HR and potential momentum to one team you should be called on it.

You have to earn their respect.

Again I agree to a certain extent, but they shouldn't respect a team so much that they give a bad call and have an inconsistent strike zone for the rest of the game. THE STRIKE ZONE SHOULDN'T CHANGE FOR THE TEAMS! I know certain pitchers get their respect like RJ with the inside corner or Glavine with the outside corner, but their strike zone should remain consistent throughout the game.

Thats what players (namely Gonzo) were arguing about. What was called a ball one inning suddenly became a strike later on.

The D'backs have no one to blame, at this time, but themselves.

Agreed I'm not saying that they didn't lose the game but umps need to be called on their mistakes no matter what teams were playing.

*sigh*

Just when Hammock hits an RBI single to tie the game at 1 a piece. Daigle pitches to Bonds and gives up a HR ... 2-1 Giants

What do you do if you have a rookie pitcher struggling with his confidence? I'd say pitch around him. Bob Brenly and all his intelligence would let him pitch to the best hitter of this generation with the bases empty. Good call Brenly.

D-Backs get a gift call at first and take a 3-2 lead. Shea sure looked out at first.

I interpreted your statement another way, BC867 - you are correct about our lack of discipline at the plate, and how that could affect an ump's judgement.

Brenly is a ******. As soon as he took Stephen Randolph down, I knew they would lose this game.
