What does Logan do better than Sims exactly?

Having a stronger arm is the only thing I can think of.
LT is taller at 6'6

The Cardinals list Sims at 6'4, but reports have him about 6'1 at the combine & his pro day.

LT is stronger & throws a better deep ball than Sims, but he doesn't understand the concept of putting touch on the ball to make it easier for the receiver to catch. Everything is a 100 mph fastball with him whether you're 20 yards away or 2 yards away. This is why the ball popped off of Jaron Brown's chest pads & got intercepted in pre-season game #2.

Sims has great touch & throws an easy to catch ball, but I don't think he has the arm strength to rocket the ball into a tight space 20 yards downfield when he has to. He's more of a timing QB that leads a receiver to an open spot on the field. Some QBs can be successful this way (the current Peyton Manning), but I don't know if it'll work against 1st string defenses in the NFL for Sims.

I'm still leaning towards Sims right now just because he's done a better job leading the offense on scoring drives & the receivers prefer him over Thomas since he throws a more catch-able ball.

I think Sims is still a longshot though because they did invest a 4th rd pick in LT as a project QB & I don't know if they're willing to give up on that project after 1 season & an offseason.

I like them both. Wish we could keep both as I think both have a chance to be starters one day. As as of right now, I think BA will hold on to LT and try to get PS to the PS. This could all change come Thursday night if one falls on their face. If they are still neck and neck at the end of the Thursday game, LT will make the team and PS will be cut and hopefully added to the PS. Just calling it now. :D

Teams rarely/never have three QB's on their roster and a fourth on the PS. But there are exceptions to every rule.

I love watching these debates....folks get so passionate about who will be the better backup,.....all the while not knowing or understanding that while one guy may be working with 60% of the playbook the other guy may only be working with 25% of the playbook....or that the coaches may want to see if he has improved in going through his progressions so they call a play designed to fall right in to the defense,..so nobody is open,...just to see what the guy does.
especially with younger players the staff does not want to put them in a position to fail...they want the guy to succeed,.. then they gradually build on that success with a more difficult challenge, then another, and another....until a guy is running the entire offense against the first team.
Last pre season Thomas looked fantastic....but did not know hardly any of the offense,...so he was held out when Stanton went down...to protect his psyche and to not hinder his development.
Bruce Arians spent a draft pick on a fellow Hokie...one who has all of the QB measurables, fantastic athletic ability, and a cannon arm....... the same Bruce Arians who is known for preferring tall prototype pocket passers.....

Enter Phil Sims.... un-drafted,...short,...very mobile... mediocre arm.... apparently pretty sharp,.... but also apparently lacking the commitment to go down and get contacts after OTA's to see if improving his vision will improve how well he sees downfield.

Arians prefers the Rothlisberger, Manning, Luck, Palmer mold of QB....if he wanted a Flutie or a Brees he could have drafted him, in one Derek Carr........ but he didn't.

The staff didn't want Lindley around because he has no future here and they do not want to remind the team of what happened last season. So they bring in Sims...as a motivational signing so Thomas does not get complacent in his position....to light a fire under him, get knee deep in him.... but he would have to absorb the offense like a sponge to ever have a real shot at replacing him.

Not a bad analogy!

We should probably have a thread for "Favorite Camp QB" every year...Shane Boyd, John Navarre, Max Hall, Preston Parsons, Timmy Chang etc etc

Maybe we should name it "If this guy ever see's the field during the regular season we are screwed thread"

The guy is not really a burner in the vein of Wilson (4.55) or Cam Newton (4.58). He runs a pedestrian 4.85. Not that fast for a guy who is relatively small for a QB. I think he does a pretty good job with check downs and seeing the field but he lacks the speed to be a change of pace guy and he lacks the size to be a true pocket passer.

he is only 6 foot..... he is a runningback who can throw the ball

The guy is steadily losing inches of height over the last month. Clearly, at this rate, by October, he will be a dwarf. You nailed it oaken... Screw the dwarf!

I can't forget him.... he's the best QB that's played at UNM since, like, ever. That's the sad state of Lobo football... eeekk

As a point of curiosity, can anyone tell me if there has ever been a 3rd string QB that made it to be a starter and have a decent career?? Farve?? Brady?? were they ever 3rd string at one point??

Kurt Warner spent the 1998 season as St. Louis' 3rd string quarterback behind Tony Banks and Steve Bono. The next year, Banks and Bono were both released and Warner was elevated to 2nd string and was supposed to back up Trent Green. Green tore his ACL in a preseason game and Vermeil went with Warner as the starting QB...and the rest is history.

I won't be disappointed with the coaches decision either way really - I thought they both showed potential, but who knows how much of the playbook they were given relative to each other last night.
