I'm not a proponent of the Cardinals trading Rosen. I'd keep Rosen even if they drafted Murray and let them battle it out.

However, if they did trade Rosen is there a way to avoid the $8 million CAP hit such as another team sending a player back?

No.

if Rosen were cut -- the hit is $8mm due to guaranteed money paid out later in the contract

in a trade -- the later guaranteed money is paid by the acquiring team --

so in a trade, the cap hit is $4mm

The Cards are responsible for the $10.8m signing bonus of which the first prorated share has been accounted for. This is a non-transferable cost, which would accelerate into current fiscal year.

reports were basically PFT speculating that Rosen would be a low cost, young solution to WAshingtons QB problem

curious that PFT wonders if #15 overall would be enough

also: the cap hit to the Cards on a Rosen trade would be $4mm in 2019

Why is it curious?

If Haskins and Murray are gone, he is the best young QB available.

I think the 15th pick and a 4th or a player is very possible.

This is wrong.

Guaranteed money already paid out is not the responsibility of the acquiring team but the team that signed the original contract. OTC and Sportrac both say the cap cap hit on a pre June 1 trade is $8.1 million

To explain it...Rosen was paid a $10.8 million pro rated signing bonus, meaning the Cardinals already paid him that last year. That’s around $2.7 million a year, if you subtract that $2.7 from the $10.8 that leaves $8.1 million that would be dead money. He has additional bonuses that he can reach ($4.2 million in roster bonuses over the next 3 years) that any team that trades for him is responsible for.

Josh Rosen signed a four year contract with the Arizona Cardinals worth $17,597,760 on May 10, 2018. Rosen's contract is fully guaranteed. He received a $10,878,372 signing bonus. Rosen has fully guaranteed training camp roster bonuses due on the 3rd day of training camp from 2019-2021.

Trades
Sometimes, players are traded away, and this affects the salary cap in much the same way as a cut or a retirement. The team from which a player is traded is no longer on the hook for unpaid salaries or future bonuses, but is still responsible for accounting for any bonuses that have already been paid. That may just be remaining, prorated signing bonus money, but it can also include things like a roster bonus that was paid at the beginning of the current league year. Again, this all depends heavily on when the player is traded.

Rosen is better than Haskins and Murray.

A lot more starting experience and played well at a school that severely lacked talent.

beating a dead horse man. most of these guys dont comprehend the fact that Rosen would be the #1 QB in this draft....and the only one ranked as a top five talent.
both of this years guys would have went after rosen last year...and likely even after Lamar Jackson

but somehow the magic midget is worth the #1 overall pick.....go figure.........

In the 2012 draft, how many QBs were picked before R. Wilson, and where are they now sir?

I'll give you a hint. Five. Five were picked before Wilson, and exactly one can realistically match up in terms of NFL production, and that's A Luck.

Stinky Brock Osweiler was picked 18 spots before R. Wilson. Lol..

But keep telling us oaken1, with your omnipotent football knowledge, how strong is the correlation of draft rankings and actual NFL production. It's really, really interesting.

Thank you for the explanation. I didn’t know how the cap worked.

So we finally get a QBOTF and we want to trade him?

This is ludicrous to even think about when he hasn't been given a fair shot with a decent O coordinator. I realize he looked lost at times and made some bad throws, but to give on him already is not the right thing to do.

Murray has a lot of ???. He is not a sure thing. Me for one I'm not willing to gamble on this.

Now trading the top pick? Possible, but have to be blown away or take the top guy. Keim has a lot riding on these decisions.

Ok... let's draft the magic midget in the third round.

Shane, why do you think this?

Russell Wilson's combine 40 time = 4.55. I'm confident that Murray's 40 time at his pro day will be around 4.45, maybe even sub 4.4.

Murray is more athletic than Wilson, and is a more accomplished QB to boot (although not by a lot, Wilson had an excellent senior season at WIS).

What basis do you have sir, for saying that Murray will not accomplish as much as Russell Wilson has in the NFL?

Because all the evidence that we have in front of us? It says it's more likely than not that Murray will accomplish at least, or perhaps even more, than what Wilson has accomplished in the NFL.

Don't you want that for your beloved Cardinals Shane? Don't you want a better version of Russell Wilson to lead your Cardinals to victory?

We fired Wilks after his first year because him and his staff where incompetent, which affected everyone on the team and especially a rookie QB. Anyone who thinks Rosen is a bust and worth trading should then be making posts on what a bad idea it was to fire Wilks after only one year. There was a reason we fired Wilks and then got a offensive guy like Kingsberry... the problem was not Rosen and why we saw a guy like Peterson wanting out

College stats don’t equate to guaranteed NFL success. You have all fallen in love with a one-year wonder who doesn’t have nowhere near the same build as Russell Wilson.

I am a firm believer that that’s a phony 207 In the main reason his agent didn’t want him performing in drills at the combine… Now he can drop weight to where he’s more comfortable performing those drills in the 190 range...

And an even bigger reason is he has shown he isn’t Completely sold on football... he was wavering on his choice right up until about two weeks ago... he can bolt back to baseball at the first sign of any adversity in the NFL. Not a good risk for any 1st round pick much less #1 overall.

Wilson started a lot more games in college.

It's rare that a QB that started less than 35 games in college is any good.

How did Murray look at TAMU? Yeah he sucked.

The only place I have seen people claiming Rosen is a bust or that he is inaccurate is on this board. His accuracy issues started later in the season, and were brought upon by bad mechanical issues due to the constant pressure. "Happy feet" if you will. Its universally agreed that he was in one of the worst situations for a rookie QB ever. The jury is still out on Rosen. Look no further then our divisional rivals the Rams. And Steve Wilks and co make Jeff Fisher look like Bill Belichick as far as coaching goes.
