Okay, I don't like a whole lot of country, but this one by Martina McBride always gets me.

"Wrong Again"

From the day we met
You made me forget
All my fears
Knew just what to say
And you kissed away
All my tears

I knew this time I had finally found
Someone to build my life around
Be a lover and a friend
After all my heart had put me through
I knew that it was safe with you
And what we had would never end
Wrong again

Everybody swore
They’d seen this before
We’d be fine
And you’d come to see that you still loved me
In good time

And they said there’s nothing you can do
It’s something that he’s going through
It happens to a lot of men
And I told myself that they were right
That you’d wake up and see the light
And I just had to wait ’til then
Wrong again

And it seemed to me the pain would last
My chance for happiness had passed
And nothing waited ’round the bend
I was sure I’d never find someone
To heal the damage you had done
And my poor heart would never mend
Wrong again
Wrong again

Hold it up to the light: David Wilcox

I just recently moved from AZ, where all of my friends and family are, and where I'd lived my entire life. It was a gut wrenching decision, one that I'm still not entirely over. As an extremely rare 3rd generation native of AZ, I felt I was letting my family down by moving away. I listened to this song almost every night for several months. It was an enormous comfort, and still a moving song (to me), to this day. The live version (with his intro) is even better, but any version conveys the message: a song about life-time decisions that shows no trust, but in the end reminds you that no matter your decision, it's going to be a wonderful life...

It's the choice of a lifetime - I'm almost sure
I will not live my life in between anymore
If I can't be certain of all that's in store
This far it feels so right
I will hold it up - hold it up to the light,
Hold it up to the light, hold it up to the light

The search for my future has brought me here
This is more than I'd hoped for, but sometimes I fear
That the choice I was made for will someday appear
And I'll be too late for that flight
So I will hold it up - hold it up to the light,
Hold it up to the light, hold it up to the light

It's too late - to be stopped at the crossroads
Each life here - a possible way
But wait - and they all will be lost roads
Each road's getting shorter the longer I stay

Now as soon as I'm moving - my choice is good
This way comes through right where I prayed that it would
If I keep my eyes open and look where I should
Somehow all of the signs are in sight
If I hold it up to the light

I said God, will you bless this decision?
I'm scared, Is my life at stake?
But I see if you gave me a vision
Would I never have reason to use my faith?

I was dead with deciding - afraid to choose
I was mourning the loss of the choices I'd lose
But there's no choice at all if I don't make my move
And trust that the timing is right
Yes and hold it up hold it up to the light
Hold it up to the light, hold it up to the light

Don't Cry Out Loud - Melissa Manchester

This song has ALWAYS made me sad...even when my life was perfectly happy...

Baby cried the day the circus came to town
'cause she didn't want parades just passin' by her
So she painted on a smile and took up with some clown
While she danced without a net upon the wire
I know a lot about 'er 'cause, you see
Baby is an awful lot like me

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside, learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all

Baby saw that when they pulled that big top down
They left behind her dreams among the litter
The different kind of love she thought she'd found
There was nothin' left but sawdust and some glitter
But baby can't be broken 'cause you see
She had the finest teacher-that was me-I told 'er

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost made it

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all

Love that song. One of my friends sang an upbeat version of it at the Teen Arts Festival in high school. She was very talented. Loved it!

For me pretty much anything from Outlandish, and lately it's been "I only ask of God"

No, it's the not the best of subjects. And, no, it's not the best of songs. But I still like it.

"Lips Of An Angel"
Hinder

Honey why you calling me so late?
It's kinda hard to talk right now.
Honey why are you crying? Is everything okay?
I gotta whisper 'cause I can't be too loud

Well, my girl's in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on
It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak

And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

It's funny that you're calling me tonight
And, yes, I've dreamt of you too
And does he know you're talking to me
Will it start a fight
No I don't think she has a clue

Well my girl's in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on
It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak

And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

It's really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak

And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

Honey why you calling me so late?

I'll Keep Your Memory Vague - Finger Eleven

This one's been killin' me lately:

This won't break your heart
But I just think it could
'Cause I haven't tried as hard as I should
To separate you from everything I do
But I would never want to come between us two

I'll keep your memory vague
So you won't feel bad about me
I'll say the things that you said
Sometimes so it reminds me

I'll keep your memory vague
So you won't feel bad about me
I'll say the things that you said
Sometimes so it reminds me

Now I'm thinking back
To what I said before
I hope your heart won't have to hurt anymore
Cause it's really not that sad from here
Because the moments I can feel you near
They keep you close to me my dear
And if they ever become too clear...

I'll keep your memory vague
So you won't feel bad about me
I'll say the things that you said
Sometimes so it reminds me

I'll keep your memory vague
So you won't feel bad about me
I'll say the things that you said
Sometimes so it reminds me

Now you've gone away
Don't worry it's ok
That you're gone away

Now you've gone away
Further than yesterday
But you'll never leave these scenes
My mind replays

I'll keep your memory vague
So you won't feel bad about me
I'll say the things that you said
Sometimes so it reminds me

Where in the world have you gone now?

It's always older Dream Theater for me. Here's a few snippets of songs that really mean something to me. This will be long, but I promise it's a good read...

Scarred (Awake)

It's never enough
You're wasting your time
Isn't there something I could say?
You don't understand
You're closing me out
How can we live our lives this way?

You tell me I'm wrong
I'm risking my life
Still, I have nothing in return
I show you my hands
You don't see the scars
Maybe you'll leave me here to burn.

What if the rest of the world
was hopelessly drowning in vain?
Where would our self pity run?
Suddenly everyone cares.

Do you feel you don't know me anymore?
And do you feel I'm afraid of your love?
And how come you don't want me asking?
And how come my heart's not invited?
You say you want everyone happy
Well, we're not laughing.

And how come you don't understand me?
And how come I don't understand you?
Thirty years say we're in this together
So open your eyes.

Voices (Awake)

I'm kneeling on the floor
staring at the wall
like the spider in the window
I wish that I could speak
Is there fantasy in refuge?
God in politicians?
Should I turn on my religion?
These demons in my head tell me to

I'm lying here in bed
Swear my skin is inside out
Just another Sunday morning

Seen my diary on the newsstand
Seems we've lost the truth to quicksand
It's a shame no one is praying
'Cause these voices in my head
keep saying...

'Love, just don't stare.'
'Reveal the Word when you're
supposed to'
Withdrawn and introverted
Infectiously perverted
'Being laughed at and confused
keeps us pleasantly amused
enough to stay.'

Lines in the Sand (Falling into Infinity)

We fabricate our demons
Invite them into our homes
Have supper with the aliens
And fight the war alone
We conjure up our skeletons
Enlist the den of theives
Frightened from our closets
Then sewn upon our sleeves

In the stream of consciousness
There is a river crying
Living comes much easier

Once we admit we're dying

Misunderstood (6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence)

It challenges the essence of my soul
And leaves me in a state of disconnection
As I navigate the maze of self control

Playing a lion being led to a cage
I turn from a thief to a beggar
From a god to God save me

How can I feel abandoned even when the world surrounds me
How can I bite the hand that feeds the strangers all around me
How can I know so many
Never really knowing anyone

If I seem superhuman I have been misunderstood

And then some of my own and that of my band that really matter to me:

This War Ends (The Asylum album)

Live for yourself
Kill the enemy
Conquer thy destiny

This is what I want
You can’t destroy the dream
In my nightmares you haunt me
I am not afraid

In reality, I control my destiny
Standing all alone, I won’t let this be

This war ends with me

Can’t take away…what’s mine…who I am, who I’m destined to be
Try to break in…into me…you can’t break me

Boundaries (The Asylum album)

Pushing me, surrounded by my last strings of sanity
Feel my boundaries, they’re closing in on me
When I have nothing but my soul, even that can I control?

Running down this hall of lies, sin still fresh in my mind
Cast a stone at these walls, forever plaguing, deep inside

By The Time You Hear This (my solo album, Screaming into the Abyss)

Every night when I look outside
Splintered shadows cast down like tears from your eyes
In this artificial womb I await your arrival
Every day I’m still alive

Each breath I take now is one less I have
Moving toward an awkward date with destiny
Cumbersome as it seems, I give nothing less

And though the darkness seems too bright
And you have come undone
All I ever wanted was for you to sacrifice
As I hear you
Feel you
Call out my name

And by the time you hear this song,
I’ll be…

Those are my kind of lyrics, and they're the kind that truly touch my soul.

It's become dated now, but I was in Europe when the wall fell, and the anthem of the time was "Wind of Change" by the Scorpions. It's probably a bit cheesy in the 2000s, but back in the early 90s it defined a momentous occasion in history--made even more poignant because I was in Europe when all those changes happened.

Mad World by Gary Jules gets to me everytime.

It's the song used in the Gears of War commecials.

I also enjoy the original version by Tears for Fears:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urW5lfAcaM8

*I actually had mentioned the Tears for Fears version earlier in this thread*

I admit though Jules captured the emotions somewhat better in his cover.

Another song that deeply moves me is the following:

"Nothingness"
-Living Colour-

Well like a descendant, I drifted far, far and wide
Isolation, separation, no where to hide
Maybe there’s somewhere I can go
Where there’s sunshine and the wind won’t blow

Nothingness
All I have to feel is my lonliness
Nothing in the attic ’cept an empty chest
And nothing lasts forever

Although there are many, I look for no one, no one but me
I search for things that are taking me high and far out of reach
But this is the place I call my home
I live with the lies and the fear all alone

Nothingness
All I have to feel is my lonliness
Nothing in the attic ’cept an empty chest
And nothing lasts forever

Nothingness
All I have to feel is my lonliness
Nothing in the attic ’cept an empty chest
And nothing lasts forever

Nothingness
Lonliness
Empty chest
And nothing lasts forever
Nothing lasts forever
Nothing lasts forever
Nothing lasts forever
Nothing lasts forever

It's funny/interesting when that happens.

It's the same thing with Imagine. Lennon's version is a classic, but A Perfect Circle's melancolic version fits the lyrics better somehow.

"Seven Spanish Angels"

Willie Nelson & Ray Charles

Played at my dad's funeral. I can hardly even hear that song now. Just looking up the lyrics chokes me up....but yet I still have to hear it so I youtubed it too.

He looked down into her brown eyes,
Said, " Say a prayer for me."
She threw her arms around him,
Whispered, "God will keep us free."
They could hear the riders comin,
He said, "This is my last fight.
If they take me back to Texas,
They won't take me back alive."

**Chorus**
There were seven Spanish Angels,
At the alter of the Sun.
They were prayin' for the lovers,
In the valley of the gun.
When the battle stopped,
And the smoke cleared.
There was thunder from the throne.
And seven Spanish angels,
Took another angel home.

She reached down and picked the gun up,
That lay smokin in his hand.
She said, "Father please forgive me,
I can't make it without my man."
And she knew the gun was empty,
And she knew she couldn't win.
Her final prayer was answered,
When the rifles fired again.

**Chorus**
