Yeah, Willie is the man though....here's another song I always loved from him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3DXyfL3HX0

"You Were Always on my Mind."

Always struck me as an incredibly sad song, and I've always thought that Willie's version was far better than Elvis'. I think it is because of Willie's everyman voice...and the song strikes me as that "i can't believe I was such a dope and lost that great girl by taking her for granted" which sounds so good coming from Willie's nasaly tones.

I like Willie's song about the guy "Paco". You know that one?

It's funny/interesting when that happens.

It's the same thing with Imagine. Lennon's version is a classic, but A Perfect Circle's melancolic version fits the lyrics better somehow.

Original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEOkxRLzBf0

Cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpqKA9_ddFk

It took pure genius for Lennon to compose/write "Imagine" in the first place, and A Perfect Circle or any band had 20-30+ years to try to perfect in some way. Good find though, not too many can capture a Beatle (whether when together or solo) as well as A Perfect Circle, because several have committed injustices in covering any of their songs.

I've mentioned this song before, but don't know if I have in this thread. It's "Angel's Son". It was written by Sevendust lead singer, Lajon Witherspoon, in dedictation to Snot lead singer, Lynn Strait and his dog (Dobbs) died in a car accident on a California highway:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZJvBK24si8

In fact, several artists got together to record a tribute album honoring Strait, which included "Angel's Song". Members of Korn, System of a Down, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, etc all contributed in some shape or form. True, those aren't the greatest bands (only Sevendust is worthwhile), but their efforts were solid in this instance.

Life is changing
i cant go on
with out you

Rearranging. I will be strong
I'll stand by you

(You were fighting everyday)
(So hard to hide the pain)
(I know you never said goodbye)
(I had so much left to say)

One last song
Given to an Angel's Son
As soon as you were gone
As soon as you were gone

I have a new life now
She lives through you
What can I do
Feel so alone now
I pray for you
We still love you

(You were fighting everyday)
(So hard to hide the pain)
(I know you never said goodbye)
(I had so much left to say)

One last song
Given to an Angel's Son
As soon as you were gone
As soon as you were gone

One last song
(I can't believe you're gone)
Given to an Angel's Son
(I can't believe)
As soon as you were gone
As soon as you were gone

Sorry. :( I mean, he is good and all...I hyperbohate on him sometimes, but he was very good. On this particular song though, it's too "grand" in the big-voice elvis style...and Willie's version sounds more "authentic" to me, a poor dolt realizing he messed up, which really works for the son. Which is surprising though, since it meant so much to Elvis.

I love "In the Ghetto" by Elvis though...great song and performance.

Lyrics by Opeth, here's Black Rose Immortal:

Opeth - Black Rose Immortal Lyrics

In the name of desperation
I call your name
A lamentation I sigh
Again and again

Spiritual eclipse
The gateways are closed for me to seek

The night...
A veil of stars, watching
My shadow is born from light
The light of the eye, in darkness

Over troubled waters memories soar
Endlessly, searching night and day
The moonlight caresses a lonely hill
With the calmness of a whisper

I wear a naked soul
A blank face in the streaming water
It is cold in here
Frost scar my coat with dust

Eyes attach to your mute portrait
We spoke only through thoughts
Together we gazed, awaited
Hours brought thirst and the rising sun

Sunbirds leave their dark recesses
Shadows glid the archways

Do not turn your face towards me
Confronting me with my lonliness
You are in a forest unknown
The secret orchard
And your voice is vast and achromatic
But still so precious

Lullaby of the crescent moon took you
Mesmerized, its kaleidoscopic face
Granted you a hollow stare
Another soul within the divine herd

I have kept it
The amaranth symbol
Hiddin inside the golden shrine
Until we rejoice in the meadow
Of the end
When we both walk the shadows
It will set ablaze and vanish
Black rose immortal

It is getting dark again
Dusk shuffle across the fields
The evening trees moan as if they knew
At night I always dream of you

Also the symphonic gothic metal band Lacrimosa (who are staggeringly brilliant) have some of the best lyrics--mostly in German, which I hardly speak, but the beauty translates to English. Here's some from their album Elodia:

Am End stehen wir zwei (At The End There Are Two of Us)

No compromises
No silent tears
No kisses whose taste leads me to you
No repetition
No deception
No painful touch from the past
Only the hope of a second chance
That is all we have left
A second chance for you and me
A second chance for the two of us
You need to say nothing now
Don’t need to love me
I have hope for us both
Because at the end there are the two of us
The music gets through from far as a stranger
I don’t recognize you anymore
Your love remains sacred to me
Your life has slipped away
A farewell with no end
A cloister in your heart
A love with no limits
A warmth with no light
Thus you lie there cold and lifeless
And yet you warm my heart
My hope shall guide me
Through the days without you
And the love shall carry me
When the pain ends all hopes

Please don't get me started on Elvis! :D

Anyways, to get this back on topic, another song that has always moved is Mad Season's "River of Deceit":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abS2WuLOKEQ

Reminds me of my final few months before I graduated high school, such a classic indeed.

At least so the prophet says
I could either burn
Or cut off my pride and buy some time
A head full of lies is the weight
Tied to my waist
The river of deceit pulls down
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down
My pain is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be
I could either drown
Or pull off my skin and swim to shore
Now I can grow a beautiful
Shell for all to see
The river of deceit pulls down
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down

No one mentioned the Star Spangled Banner?

How about America the Beautiful sung by Ray Charles?

Good point. Recently I heard a guy sing the SSB with such a deep booming voice, I thought he should be the one to always sing it to make other countries fear invasion at any moment.

Just kidding.

Oops. Pancho not Paco. Willie Nelson on Colbert was classic.

Took me awhile to find the video of that song...lots of bad sounding ones on Youtube...plus there was a Dylan/Willie duet of it but if you don't like Dylan you wouldn't like it.

Video

All the federales say..they could have had him any day...they only let him slip away...out of kindness, I suppose...

Merle Haggard is awesome too. I really love all those Highwaymen...cash, merle, willie, waylon. Just awesome, original and distinct voices.

That federales verse has been in my head since I posted about it. I'll have to listen to Dylan's version. I like him.

Waylon's son singing in the Johnny Cash movie was awesome, creepy but awesome.

I have seen that movie 5 times. It wasn't really creepy, I was just surprised the kid sounded like Waylon until I found out it was his kid.

It was the second movie I put on my iPod. Right after Anchorman. ;)

Well, I'm going to include 4 very "moving" songs from the 80s:

The first 2 have share a lot in common. Both were/are prominent bands from Australia and lost a member of their respective bands due to suicide:

First is Crowded House w/"Better Be Home Soon":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOenp3MUnh0

Somewhere deep inside
Somethings got a hold on you
And its pushing me aside
See it stretch on forever

I know Im right
For the first time in my life
Thats why I tell you
Youd better be home soon

Stripping back the coats
Of lies and deception
Back to nothingness
Like a week in the desert

I know Im right
For the first time in my life
Thats why I tell you
Youd better be home soon

So dont say no, dont say nothings wrong
Cos when you get back home maybe Ill be gone

It would cause me pain
If we were to end it
But I could start again
You can depend on it

I know Im right
For the first time in my life
Thats why I tell you
Youd better be home soon
Thats why I tell you
Youd better be home soon
Following that.. INXS "Never Tear Us Apart"...Featured here is a very intimate live version performed in '94 (about 7 years after the songs initial release) on Jools Holland:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFOoJGQ46Hk

Dont ask me
What you know is true
Dont have to tell you
I love your precious heart
I
I was standing
You were there
Two worlds collided
And they could never tear us apart

We could live
For a thousand years
But if I hurt you
Id make wine from your tears

I told you
That we could fly
cause we all have wings
But some of us dont know why

I
I was standing
You were there
Two worlds collided
And they could never ever tear us apart

Then here's the Commodore's with their 1985 hit (sans Lionel Ritchie) "Night Shift" in which was written in dedication to both Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, both legends who passed too prematurely and right around the same time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxrkFtvE67c

Marvin, he was a friend of mine
And he could sing a song
His heart in every line
Marvin sang of the joy and pain
He opened up our minds
And I still can hear him say
Aw talk to me so you can see
What's going on
Say you will sing your songs
Forevermore (evermore)

Gonna be some sweet sounds
Coming down on the nightshift
I bet you're singing proud
Oh I bet you'll pull a crowd
Gonna be a long night
It's gonna be all right
On the nightshift
Oh you found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift

ackie (Jackie), hey what'you doing now
It seems like yesterday
When we were working out
Jackie (Jackie, oh) you set
The world on fire
You came and gifted us
Your love it lifted us
Higher and higher
Keep it up and
We'll be there
At your side
Oh say you will sing
Your songs forevermore (evermore)

Gonna be some sweet sounds
Coming down on the nightshift
I bet you're singing proud
Oh I bet you'll pull a crowd
Gonna be a long night
It's gonna be all right
On the nightshift
Oh you found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift

Gonna miss your sweet voice
That soulful voice
On the nightshift
We all remember you
Ooh the songs are coming through
At the end of a long day
It's gonna be okay
On the nightshift
You found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift

Lastly for now, I must include Tears for Fears again... this time "Head Over Heals" (which ranks as one of my all-time favorite videos as well):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2s4wbFAhFw

I wanted to be with you alone
And talk about the weather
But traditions I can trace against the child in your face
Won't escape my attention
You keep your distance fear the system of touch
And gentle persuasion
I'm lost in admiration that I need you this much
Oh, you're wasting my time
You're just wasting time

Something happens and I'm head over heels
I never find out till I'm head over heels
Something happens and I'm head over heels
Ah don't take my heart
Don't break my heart
Don't throw it away

I made a fire and watching burn
Thought of your future
With one foot in the past now just how long will it last
No no no have you no ambition
My mother and my brothers used to breathe in clean in air (Changes with those...)
And dreaming I'm a doctor (They can't stop...)
It's hard to be a man when there's a gun in your hand
Oh I feel so...

Something happens and I'm head over heels

And this my four leaf clover
I'm on the line, one open mind
This is my four leaf clover
In my minds eye
One little boy, one little man
Funny how, time flies
