Rian is a solid choice, I just think fan expectations will be higher now from both what Ep7 has for fans and his experience.
As for the prequels, I'd like to see Disney reboot them. As much as reboots are hated, I think we'd all like to see those rebooted. That's a cool idea there too.
I always thought Darth Maul should have been kept around longer and as Palpatine started to sway Anakin to the dark side that a power struggle would happen between Maul and Anakin. In the end Anakin kills Maul to take his place by the Emperors side as his apprentice.
The whole bit about wanting to save Padme was silly.
I think Rian is going to be under more pressure than JJ with Ep8. JJ had a track record of Lost and Star Trek (among others) and while Looper and Brick were good they're not Star Wars. Sure ppl were concerned with JJ, but in the end he delivered what fans wanted and set the bar high.
Rian is a big fan of Gordon-Levitt, so are the odds high he'll be in Ep8?
But even Kasden seems excited to see where Ep8 goes.
yup. JJ is a very good popcorn director, but I've NEVER seen him do anything truly original or flat out GREAT. Brick is a really good movie and Looper was fantastic.

There are two definite things I would have changed in the movie.
I would have changed the setting of Jakku to something less sand duney. It was too similar to Tatooine. You can make something desolate and remote without having sand dunes.
I also would have reworked the last act to get rid of the planet killing weapon aspect. We've already seen two death stars and didn't need a third. It shouldn't have been too hard to tweak the story to have another reason for infiltrating the base.
Not many settings that haven't been used. We've had ice(Hoth), swamp(Degobah), foresty(Yavin 4 and Endor), cloud(Bespin), desert(Tatooine), water world(Kamino), volcanic(Mufasar). Hard not to duplicate.

We still have high desert, mountainous (although Alderaan had some wide mountain shots), rain forest, beach, subterranean, and desolate (like the surface of the moon).
If something as large as a Star Destroyer crashed into a planet, it would be a planet-killer, wouldn't it? Like Deep Impact? So maybe a vegetation-less planet makes some sort of sense. It would have been cool if they had treated it like it was once a lush planet that had been destroyed by the battle decades earlier. Dead vegetation everywhere, ruin, noxious atmosphere. Oh well, a desert setting negates all of that too.
I would think a settlement that close to a crashed Star Destroyer would resemble Pompeii decades after Vesuvius.

Simply don't see it. This franchise is a different beast. I think that's why for instance they are doing things around that time frame. I mean I love a couple of the actors like EM and LN. Don't mess with it. There is a ton of material to explore still. By the way Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday everyone!!!

I was just pointing out that fans would revolt if IV-VI were touched - look at the backlash over Lucas' unwanted changes to the original trilogy.
Episodes I-III, not so much. CGI-riddled kiddie films made and directed by Lucas - and it is obvious. I wonder how different they would have been had he given over control (even just the director's chair) to others?
I don't think they will be rebooted, but honestly I would care either way.
I think the fans would want a re-do on I-III more than just about anything. I tried watching some of them the last month... they're really terrible, terrible films. There are some moments here and there, but Anakin is supposed to be the catalyst for everything and Lucas botched the character royally. I suspect they'd also really like to ditch some dumb crap that got put into the cannon (only 2 Sith, mediclorians, ect ect ect).
I doubt they'd do it for a while, out of respect for Lucas, but there is a ton of money to be made there an a fan base that would be very thankful.

Old fans wouldn't be upset at 1-3, but young fans who started up with the prequels love them. They will revolt. I have three of them. They love the Annie and Padme stuff, and even ok with Jar Jar. Which makes me sick, but that's not my movie. It is theirs.
IMO, everyone needs to just **** and enjoy the story across the board, and stop worrying about nostalgia, circular plots, rhyming, the 80s, practicals, CGI, the 2000s, wooden acting, rampant drug use, reshoots, pandering, etc. Just enjoy it if you do, and don't if you don't.

Lol... The people telling those with contrary opinions to **** and that they're crazy are the ones who need to relax? Okay. Sorry if having an opinion contrary to yours on a movie ruffles your feathers so much that you insult them, project some stupid idea that they believe their opinion is the only one that matters and wish they'd shut up. Remember, it's just a movie so R-E-L-A-X with all that garbage.
I can't believe they killed Han... and I totally saw it coming, especially with the position of the lightsaber when they came close. I was like, if he turns on his lightsaber it's going to go right through him... and it did.
I said... don't go out there... but he did. It sucks, because I love Han Solo.
Ren is crazy, but I'm thinking he's under some sort of mind control, and in the end breaking that, will be his redemption. There is also a theory that he is some sort of spy and when he asked if Han would do anything for him... a kill shot
Still can't wait to see the next two, but it sure seems like history is rhyming, and Ren is Vader, and the girl is luke. After all it was the force awakening in HER that was the title of the movie.

I'm just praying they went super safe with the 1st one, basically remaking ANH to get all the prequel-pissed-fans back in line. If this all leads up to Rey, turning Ren back to the light and defeating Snoke together, that would really, truly be pathetic storytelling. Say what you want about the prequels, (and I say they were ATROCIOUS on the whole), at least Lucas tried to tell a entirely different story of downfall of a hero. Really hoping Rian takes many more chances moving forward with the story.

There is nothing safe about killing Han and not because of the obvious reasons but because Kylo has already done what Luke could not. It's a huge difference IMO to have Kylo kill his father. In essence, I think his journey to the Dark Side is now complete....so to speak. Not to mention he didn't turn to the Dark Side out of love to save someone either. I would have to imagine his mother might still come into play but it doesn't appear to me they are going down the redemption path. Although it would be completely unrealistic for Leia not to keep trying.

I didn't think it was safe either, I thought it was an awesome movie. Just my opinion.
A bunch of my family hadn't seen it, as was revaled during our Christmas Eve party, and everyone got all excited to see it so a bunch of us caught a late Christmas Eve showing! (my 4th time seeing it lol Nerd! I cant help it, it's just a fun movie. Rey is so freakin awesome.) Honestly, everyone (even my jerk brother in law who hates everything) loved it! lol It was so fun. Another great life-memory Star Wars has provided me with. Seeing The Force Awakens together as a family on Christmas eve! Everyone was in their Christmas sweaters, santa hats, smuggled in lots of treats. lol It was a blast. Thank you Star Wars!
It's just a matter of taste. I get some of the points that have been brought up, and there are some pretty good points but they just dont bother me. I agree that Kylo wasn't as badass as I initially thought he was going to be, after he took off the mask he kindof turned into a wimp, but it still didn't ruin the movie for me or make me hate it. Maybe this is the trigger to him being the baddest baddie in SW hitory going forward. No mercy, for anyone? It could be that just as easily as it could be something dumb so I hope you dont get preemptively annoyed. The not knowing is the great part that we didn't get to have during the prequels. Everyone knew where that ship was sailing so you just kinda had to enjoy the scenery. Atleast here we are left with wonder. I mean even the guys who didn't like it as much as other are freaking stoked for 2017 I bet! We all will be!
I will say that I dont quite get why some of us feel the need to hammer points in again and again and again and again and argue about it and get all personal,, To what end? To be right? To have the last word? Is it really that important? Then again it's a message board, that's what its for I guess? Does anyone really know? Why cant I stop asking questions? I just dont get that mentality of having to be right or to "win the argument." So why cant we just agree to disagree instead of getting all pissed off at eachother? lol
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
No shutups here. No voices shall be stifled in the EPIC ASFN Star Wars thread of 2015!!! (most likely carrying well into 2017)
I love all you guys. Even Stout! Happy all the holidays lol.
