If anyone's seen anything kasdan's written in the last fifteen, they have some good reasons to be skeptical.

That vein said, these movies can't possibly be worse than phantom menace and clones, so I got very little problem Trying to reach into the way back machine to rejuvenate Tge franchise.

iphone... I mean... seriously, has anyone seen any of Kasdan's last couple movies? Unfortunately, I have. Dreamcatcher was one of the worst movies I've ever seen and I had the misfortune of being subjected to Darling Companion on a flight last month. I decided to stare at the shut window on the plane for an hour rather than watch the second half of that abomination.

my big question about these movies is simple... who the hell can possibly be the bad guy in a continuing story about the Skywalkers. And if the story ISN'T about the Skywalkers, is this even a Star Wars movie?

the only way I can see any of this making any kind of sense thematically, is if Luke somehow falls to the dark-side and it's about his son trying to get him back. But even that sounds ridiculous and even more ridiculously repetitive.

but if we're going by what Lucas and others close to Lucas have said, which was the idea was always for 9 stories to be part of one big story, how else can this go following pretty much the most important family in the galaxy?

But Mumford was ... yeah, I think I'm there with you.

If this is what they're thinking, I'm banking on more "C-Span in Space," with ET playing an integral role (again).

There were some interesting ideas for villains in the novels, an alien race that couldn't be felt in the force, a lost tribe of Sith, a new threat posed by the remnants of the Empire and a whole army of Mandolorians like Fett.

That all sounds like a different universe to me.

I see Luke as the guy rebuilding the Jedi order. He has too. It has to be his mission in life now. He must rebuild the order to keep order in the galaxy. He is not the old wise Jedi.

My guess is there would have to be some offspring of Skywalker involved somewhere. Maybe it is his own son or something that can be tempted by the dark side because Luke is too preoccupied with rebuilding the order. If this truly is a "continuation" this has to be out the next generation.

I wonder if Star Wars loyalists will be up in arms over his version like some of the Trekkies (or Trekkers) were. It sounds like he has a little more reverence for Star Wars, so maybe he will do it proud.

Didn't he just say (a few weeks ago) that he'd not direct any new Star Wars out of loyalty to JJTrek?

I like JJ, but I'm a little cautious about a guy who has been so immersed in Star Trek making the switch to Star Wars.

If true, i'm surprised he took the gig. He had previously said no and implied he didn't want to cross into SW because of ST. I reckon Into Darkness will be his last ST movie.
I just hope he reduces the lens flares in SW...

Don't forget R2 made a came in the first ST.

I'm quite sure why, but this sounds really dirty. :D

A long, long time ago, on a island in the South Pacific ...

I'm not crazy about JJ Abrams as a filmmaker who makes incredible original content, but asking him to mimc something and put a fresh spin on an old idea IS what he's good at.

if anything, this movie will be at the very least pretty entertaining and that alone will rise above the expectations I had when the idea of these movies was first announced.

My only beef so far is with them calling it Ep. VII, which I could be wrong but to me implies doing another complete trilogy arc and presumably involving a Skywalker. That could unnecessarily put them into a tight corner creatively when they could instead use the vast sandbox to create individual movies that all belong in the same universe (somewhat like say the Bond franchise)

I think it's a great pick for a Director.

I was more interested in their second choice, Ben Affleck.
