I'm a little curious about how the USA Select team is coached. Do they go all out against the best players in the world, or do they change how they play based on scenarios? "Ok, guys, you are pretending you are Nigeria. Just stand there and don't do much of anything."

Based on a story YEARS ago I think they tend to go hard at the Olympians. Anyone else remember hearing rumors of a big man just making shaq look foolish and the rest of the USAsquad work hard? I think the kids name was Duncan.

Watching the replay of Sundays game...Ulis is quick and feisty. He didn't back down when Brown(#3 pick) went at him, Ulis actually stole the ball from him.

Chriss did better this game but he still needs to adjust to the speed of the game.

I loved that sequence. Brown tried to post up the little guy and Ulis stripped him and sent it down court. He is a really heady passer, and is willing to move the ball quickly rather than dominate it. He gets into the offense quickly. Sort of Nash-like that way.

The team is clearly better when Ulis is on the court. I think he eventually could be a Suns starter. Yes, I said it. He is the best floor general on the team right now.

I've been on his bandwagon for quite some time but I keep hearing things like "I think he has a place in this league" and that implied doubt concerns me. When I watch him I see no question marks about his ability to play in the NBA so it makes me wonder what I'm missing when knowledgeable people (analysts, journalists etc) keep making him sound like a long shot. I'd have some doubts if he was just a little waterbug getting by solely on his speed or quickness but he's a very skilled and heady player. He's a force on defense and he runs an offense the way we're used to seeing an offense be run.

He's 5'9" and 150 lbs. That's it, there is nothing else to look for as that is the only reason why some of these "analysts" have doubts.

Its because he is 5-10 and people are just expecting it to eventually become a liability, somehow.

It has more to do with the 150 pounds than the 5'9". If he had 30 more pounds of muscle he would have been a lottery pick, even at his current height.

Booker seems to have all the trust in Ulis, he'll give up the ball to Ulis and let him run the show.

A Celtic fan on Booker.

One dimensional and not very athletic. Top 4 in a stacked draft? That's a tough sell at this point.

Er..no, that is the narrative now. He still isn't a good athlete, and he's primarily a shooter - he isn't a total gimp at handling the ball, but the idea that he is great at another aspect of basketball aside from shooting...."leads me to believe you weren't paying attention to his rookie year, like at all".

He's not a top 4 talent in his draft class, just because he threw up 20 point games doesn't mean he's going to be a superstar. He would go up at like #10 or #9 in a re-draft.

Talk about ignorant. Bad Athlete yet posts the best lane agility time at the combine in the last decade and one of the fastests sprints. Is a one-dimensional shooter yet is among league leaders in drive efficiency and pick and roll efficiency and has multiple double digit assist games.

Are there any post-up point guards left in the league? Livingston? Williams? Anyone else?

That's exactly right! If you have to be a bit short on one position, let it be on the PG spot. There aren't many post-up point guards around, nor are there many deadly shooters, so being two or three inches shorter than your average point guard is not a big deal. That said, I don't see how he doesn't get destroyed by stronger point guards like Westbrook driving to the hoop.

That guy's an idiot and was instantly set straight by a few of the other poster's.

And a few others agreed with him. A lot of posters on RGM just look at his stats and judge him without realizing what went into those stats. Booker often had to play out of position and was also frequently the primary focus of the defense. When you consider he was drawing that kind of attention while still being the youngest player in the NBA, what he did was nothing short of amazing.

Yet Booker leads Las Vegas in assists, he is probably a better passer than either Russell or Mudiay. He shouldn't defer completely to any PG.

Can Booker play PG to some degree? Yes. But he's going to get the majority of SG/SF duties in the reg season. Ulis needs to be evaluated in SL, so he needs to run the team as the PG not Booker.

I am not sure what more I need to see of Ulis to know he belongs. His floor is a quality rotation back up pg--one of the first two off the bench.

Im sure the Suns FO would like to see a great more of Ulis. Theyll have some serious questions on whether Ulis can run the team as a backup PG if and or when they decide to trade Knight. SL, along with the upcoming training camp will be the deciding factor.

In another thread he was compared to Gerald Green.

That so random and nonsensical.

Obviously he could stand to be bigger but the thing with Ulis is he's not weak, he's strong for his size. He's essentially the exact same size as PJC, Ulis is a terrific defender and PJC has been a liability on defense for 2 years at Arizona. The primary difference is Ulis can largely hold his ground people can't just move him without it being so obvious they get called for an offensive foul. PJC just doesn't have the same physical strength so people can push him around without getting caught doing it.

The rising up and shooting over people part is complicated by his quick hands, he doesn't make it easy for you to just rise up because you have to worry he's going to poke the ball away.

SL isn't a good barometer of what a guys role will be in the coming season. They will have training camp and pre-season to figure out guys roles. Ulis has already shown what he can do against SL rosters and now it's just a matter of what he can do in camp and pre-season in order to earn a bigger role on the team.

Thats pretty much my reply to JC in the above response. I agree. They need a hard long look at Ulis, which extends onto preseason.

I like that this year's rookies play defence. That should earn them valuable playing time. Take notice, Archie...

The Suns Are on Their Way to Something
The Suns were the most watchable team, thanks largely to the ex-Kentucky backcourt of Tyler Ulis and Devin Booker. They join Eric Bledsoe, Brandon Knight, and Archie Goodwin as part of Ryan McDonough’s plan for world domination through collecting every John Calipari guard in the NBA. Ulis and Booker revived their connection from their Lexington days and outclassed most of the guys they went up against. Booker was completely overqualified for this summer run, lighting up whoever was guarding him, knocking down 3s from all over, and effortlessly creating separation off the dribble. Ulis had no problem adjusting to the size of the pro game, and dominated fellow mini-guards such as Russ Smith at their own game. Having a legitimate point guard on the roster was a differentiating factor in Vegas, and Ulis allowed everyone around him to shine.

The biggest story for the Suns was the play of Dragan Bender, who stood out by how well he moved and how well he carried his weight. He’s 7-foot-1, 220 pounds, and the Suns often had him playing out on the perimeter with Marquese Chriss and Alan Williams occupying the power positions. A player as tall as Bender shouldn’t be able to move as fluidly as he does, and his age (he doesn’t turn 19 until November) belies his on-court savvy. The game was never too fast for him. He knew where the ball was supposed to go and he knows how to get to his spots. The scouts and executives in attendance came away raving about him. No one in Vegas seems to believe in cross-racial comparisons, though, as I had one executive compare him to Toni Kukoc and another to a 7-foot-1 Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Bender, who has wing talent with the size to play center, gives an offense almost unlimited flexibility. His ceiling might not be as high as Ben Simmons’s or Brandon Ingram’s, but he’s a much better shooter than Simmons, and he’s much bigger than Ingram. He can pair as easily with Alex Len as he can with Chriss, and he gives the Suns a ton of options in their frontcourt going forward. You never want to overreact to a limited sample size against substandard competition, but Bender was the most impressive rookie I saw in Vegas.
