Summer league 2016

Interesting article. High praise for Bender even after two lackluster games. But his praise is based upon Bender's shot form and his ability to move on the perimeter, both of which were apparent to any saavy nba buff.

I, personally, would like to see Bender cut more. He stands in the corners too much. But that might be what he is being coached to do.

With Booker out for the rest of the games, I would like them to have Bender be the ball handler on pick and rolls more. He did some of it in the first game but hasn't done at all since. He doesn't look as engaged when he's not part of the main action.

I agree. A Williams looks like a man among boys. A big body banger who has a knack for the ball coming off the rim. Def adds toughness to the squad. Something the Suns desperately need.

The only thing that has surprised me about Williams was that he is capable of making 14/15 free throws. Otherwise he is doing what he was already known for IMO. He is similar to PJ Tucker in that he is a big wide body that plays hard the entire time he is on the floor. Summer League is the perfect setting for a guy like Williams to shine because a lot of the other big men have underdeveloped strength and skills and thus they have no answer for Williams' size and energy.

The reason he surprised me a bit is because of his consistency. Playing in college or overseas doesn't always translate well even at the NBA summer league level. I have seen guys look like world beaters over there and completely underwhelm at the summer league level which means they won't sniff the NBA level. There might be something there.

His stats per/36 for the Suns last year are consistent with what he has done everywhere else. The sample size is so small, that those numbers mean virtually nothing in themselves. I would not take note of them at all except that they reflect his production everywhere he has been.

Worth a look anyway.

That's how I look at it as well. At the very least it raises an eyebrow. I just have seen to many instances were guys look good elsewhere and can't even produce the same results in the summer league. Wouldn't that be fun though if he could regularly contribute?

He is not as tall, but he is wider. I doubt he will ever that leve. But there is a possibility he could be a consistent rotation player. He is a high energy, crowd favorite. Maybe his ceiling would be a slightly better Lou Amundsen.

He fouls a ton now but no one gets an easy bucket against him - and he does come up with some steals and blocked shots. I was afraid the team would just let him go this summer so I was somewhat relieved when Watson played him 22 min in one the final games, and he responded with 11 rebounds.

78 total minutes is a pitiful sample size but in both rebounding and defense at the rim he stood out so much above anyone else on the team that you have to investigate further...happily, Watson is doing that.

I wish I could say Alan Williams caught my attention last season but his consistent play has certainly caught my attention in summer league. He is a physical player that knows how to rebound. He seems to have a decent touch around the rim and FT line in summer league.

Well, yeah that's a given as PJ is a wing and Williams is a big, but the point stands that they both win match-ups for the same reasons.

I like Williams so far too. And iirc, I believe we have him locked up to a multi year contract already.

He does need to improve on not fouling however, it will be hard for him to stay on the court at the foul rate he's currently on.

So your argument is that his rebounding could translate at the next level but nothing else he has done in the summer league? Seems like Cherry picking. I don't think anybody is arguing he is going to be a world beater. I think at the very least if we get contributions now and then off the bench...it's a win.
