So, losing 3-1, they probably go titsup on goal differential as well now, right?

Sunderland now trail Newcastle by 1 in goal differential. Newcastle have to beat Villa in order to pass Sunderland.

We just have to pray now that Hull lose or draw vs Man U's reserves because we still lead Hull by 5 in GD. Obviously, I am assuming another Sunderland loss against Chelsea in this scenario.

Keeping Sbragia on as manager was a disastrous decision!

I can't lie i actually want Newcastle to go down purely for the sake of poor ownership and the dumbest move to bring in Shearer as manager... umm yea that's a win/win right?

Yeah, Ashley pretty well sucks, but I think bringing Shearer in was the right move. It's definitely given them a morale boost, and they need every bit of help they can get right now.

Ben,

Are Man U going to play their first team against Hull? I'm sure SAF wants to maintain the integrity of the game and try to win, but I know he will want to rest his players before Wednesday's match.

Never mind. Saw this. Hopefully, Hull and Newcastle will both lose on Sunday and we won't have to stress.

I understand SAF not wanting to play van der Sar, but it sucks if he doesn't play Kuszczak.

Hull's survival hopes hang on Fergie's kid glove treatment

Sir Alex Ferguson is considering throwing a 19-year-old goalkeeper who has played just once for Manchester United into a game that could decide the fate of Hull City and Newcastle United.

It is understood that, as he looks to protect his first-team players from injury ahead of next Wednesday's Champions League final against Barcelona in Rome, United manager Ferguson is considering handing young Ben Amos his Premier League debut at Hull on Sunday.

Ferguson will not risk first-choice Edwin van der Sar, and with England's Ben Foster out of action for the rest of the season after a thumb injury, the United boss is also concerned about playing Van der Sar's other understudy, Tomasz Kuszczak, in case he is injured ahead of the European showpiece final.

This leaves only Amos, whose sole first-team appearance was in a 3-1 Carling Cup win over Middlesbrough at Old Trafford last September. Ferguson is aware of the criticism he will receive if he fields a team of youngsters against Hull because Newcastle - who are at Aston Villa on the same day - will definitely be relegated if United lose.

It is expected that the team United field will include experienced players such as Gary Neville, Darren Fletcher - suspended for the Champions League final - and Portugal winger Nani as well as talented young strikers Federico Macheda, Danny Welbeck and Republic of Ireland midfielder Darron Gibson.

Elsewhere, Hull and Newcastle fans can expect to see less heralded players such as defenders James Chester - United's Young Player of the Year - and Richard Eckersley.

Hull midfielder George Boateng joked: 'We've been talking in the dressing room about who they may pick. We are hoping that Sir Alex may even call out someone from the kit room. But whoever he picks we will be playing to win.'

Ferguson was slammed after an under-strength team lost to West Ham when Carlos Tevez scored the winner on the final day of the 2006-07 season, thus relegating Sheffield United. Ferguson subsequently rang manager Neil Warnock to apologise.

But speaking ahead of the weekend draw with Arsenal that clinched the title for United, Ferguson suggested that any team he picks would be capable of winning at Hull.

POSSIBLE TEAM
(4-4-2): Amos; Neville, Chester, Cathcart, Eckersley; Nani, Gibson, Fletcher, Tosic; Macheda, Welbeck.

Well today is the day. I feel sick as a dog :barf:

This is the 5th game in a row i've missed now because of the my broken bloody collar bone, so have to watch this all develop in the house whilst texting my dad score updates at the game.

It would be so much easier coping amongst 50000 like minded soles, rather than siting her with Mrs English avoiding me like the plague.

Happy day! With Short as owner, and a new manager, we will not be relegated again. I'm sure of it.

Decent performance today, as well. Onward and upward!

Would be a shame if Newcastle ended up like Leeds and Southampton. :D

HA'WAY!

Oh well. I won't be back to this thread again after this season, that's for damn sure. I had the script for this weekend down pat...Sundy chokes, Hull chokes, Newcastle chokes. I knew we hadn't a prayer at a point, and I knew Hull would fail to get it. No one to blame but themselves, not even putting pressure on in the 2nd half. With the team in shambles, the ownership in shambles, and nothing going right, Leeds it is. The only reason I'll visit this forum now is to check out US soccer (depressing enough, usually).

I've been sporting and rooted for us both to stay up. We didn't and you did. Still, with the reception that met with, I'll say I hope you guys drop like a stone next season. So much for wanting to keep rivalries alive. Yes, you can be happy to stay up, but you'll be in the danger area again, no doubt about it. Sunderland is just not a big enough club to make it. The problem with Newcastle is, like Leeds, it is too big of a club to do well with being relegated. Ah well. So much for English soccer. I wonder who I'd like in the Bundesliga...

Eh, don't be bitter, Stout. The Championship's not so bad. I became a Sunderland fan when they were down there. I doubt there were many tears shed on Tyneside the times when we were relegated. The Mags would be laughing their asses off if the shoe were on the other foot.

Whats the line again...'you think we are fighting, i finally think we are talking'. Your and our posts are true mackem/mag banter, doesnt me we dont still love you man.

This thread would be the same without you and trust me being in different division doesnt effect a rivalary like this one.

Just makes it better for you when you go up and and we come down next year, you can laugh you socks off.

Well now let's just see if Shearer stays with the club and really learns how to manage. Worst decision was to bring him in.. Should have brought in a quality manager at least with him to help....

I am still shocked that Castle went down and Hull are staying up.. I guess Burnley and Hull are my first two choices to go down next yr...

Steve Bruce is in talks to become the next manager of Sunderland. Wigan have already confirmed they will allow him to leave and the clubs have agreed compensation.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=651646&sec=england&cc=5739

this would be a great move sundy... Bruce is top quality

looks like it will be confirmed later today.

i think its a decent call, but there are a couple of names i would have liked to have seen more. He knows the prem lge and had a great eye for a player too. He could be just the man to add some stability in the managers role and a good move for him too. At least he will not be forced to sell decent players when he gets here, unlike wigan.
