and yet a day later, all we've seen is Van Gundy say he's heard nothing about this and Monroe has yet to sign the QO. In other words... nothing has happened to substantiate this report.

It was never reported that he's gonna sign the contract the next day. Just that he told the Pistons he's doing it. He has til October 1st to do it so why rush now, he's probably on vacation for all we know.

Now, don't rule out a sign a trade between now and the start of the season, but that seems unlikely as the Pistons have exhausted trade scenarios. He plans to sign the qualifying offer before the Oct. 1 deadline.

Monroe didn't make the decision lightly. He has been discussing options with his agent David Falk for the past two offseasons, and Falk has been impressed with Monroe's analytic, intelligent and unemotional approach to free agency.

It is a rare move for a restricted free agent to forsake financial security and a long-term deal now for the hope of something similar one year later. Signing the qualifying offer to become an unrestricted free agent doesn't happen often, but it does happen and there are risks involved — injury or a down season — that could impact the value of the next contract.

It requires foresight, confidence and boldness to sign the qualifying offer, and while it gives a player a chance to explore unrestricted free agency earlier than usual, most players don't want to take that risk.

Monroe is willing, believing the money will be there for him. Monroe will be one of the best big men available next summer and is expected to receive several offers. He received two max offers this offseason, but a sign-and-trade deal could not be reached, a person familiar with situation said.

In other words...nothing has been decided and he's using the threat to sign the qualifying offer as leverage to get a better deal.

Exactly. If it's true that he received two max offers, but a trade could not be worked out, than it would be clear that he intends to leave Detroit at all cost. He could have signed either offer and let Detroit match and would have his security. I'm sure had he received the offers, they came with the stipulation that they were only offered if a trade could be worked out. So he didn't actually receive the offers. Rather he said he would sign if the team could work out a trade. No trade, no offer.

His telling the Pistons he will sign the QO would be his next move if he wants them to believe they had better work out a sign and trade or lose him for nothing.

I'm pretty sure Portland was one of the teams who the writer is claiming to have put the offer out, but I wonder if the other was the Suns?

It seems unlikely. If your speculation about the nature of the "offers" is correct, the main reason that a team would insist on that route would be if they couldn't sign Monroe outright. (They wouldn't give up something of value in a trade if they didn't have to; and if what they would be willing to offer in a trade had negative value, there would be no reason for Detroit to agree to it.) But the Suns can sign him to an offer outright, so if they wanted to go after Monroe, they would just do it.

I wouldn't necessarily believe that either team offered, or any team offered for that matter. Falk does this with all his big money clients. He'll float a rumor about Atlanta or some other organization that he has a connection to and then he'll count on his connection to stay quiet while the rumor gains traction. Maybe it's legit this time but I wouldn't count on it until the teams confirm it.

No. He was told by two teams that they would pay him the max but only in a sign and trade. Iow they would only do it if they could unload worthless salary. The pistons said no. For the record. Market value is determined by buyers who have the means to purchase, not by those who say they would if they had the money.

I would gladly overpay for a productive player if I could unload the salary of an unwanted or unneeded player in the process.

Why would the Pistons take back a crap contract for Monroe? This makes no sense. He's a free agent. Josh Smith is a different story.

In other words...he has decided to take the QO and seeing as it makes no difference if he signs the offer tomorrow or a month later, he'll do it when he's in the mood.

While leaving himself another full month for to negotiate. It's beyond ridiculous that you're arguing this point. It makes a HUGE difference if he signs it now or in a month. If he signs it now, he's locking himself into a huge risky one year deal. If he waits, the Pistons can still up their offer... Thus, this is all negotiating. What NBA or NFL player waits a month before signing a contract just....because?

Of course they could have, just as they could have signed Thomas outright, but didn't. The point is that they would (just speculation on my part) want to know they got their guy by means of a sign and trade rather than putting forth an offer and having to wait the 3 days just to see Detroit match. Why put out an offer if you're just going to see that player go back to his original team. You want to work out the trade so the offer isn't just a waste of time. If Detroit wanted something of value back (unlike Sac.) than Phoenix or whoever would say nevermind.

Of course. I'm just playing guessing games on the info put forth. None of it could be true, but I'm just speculating.

Huh? Isn't that pretty much what I said? Except I was speculating while you're making claim of fact.

I don't think the Pistons will offer him anything more tha what they have already offered. Their hands are tied. The Monroe-Smith-Drummond frontcourt sucks due to spacing and while they would probably prefer just Monroe and Drummond, nobody wants smith on that contract so their forced to keep Smith and hope that the Smith-Drummond front court with a competent SF will have better sucess (long term after Monroe leaves).

Even if the Pistons wanted to give Monroe what he wanted, they can't due to Smith's contract and Drummond's extension coming up plus the fact that trio isn't a good front court combination.

Monroe is signing the QO. 99.9% chance that nothing happens to change that.

all of this is complete speculation...just like Monroe is going to sign the QO...and hasn't, nor has he apparently told Detroit that according to Van Gundy.

in other words, much ado about nothing.

That is my point. He did not get any kind of legit offer. You can be sure of that.

I guess i was just pointing out that it was not the fear if the Pistons matching that kept Monroe from getting a max offer. It was the fact that teams that told him they would give him the max did not have the space to make the offer. Therefore they were not real max offers at all.

If that was what you were saying too, pardon me please.

According to Jude LaCava, the Suns are now exploring a trade of Eric Bledsoe.
https://twitter.com/foxsports910/status/501876736326250497

If true, they better get some value in return but I wouldn't be too disappointed to see him go considering it doesn't look like he wants to be here all that much.

It's a dumb report IMO. The Suns have no power when it comes to a trade. Reportedly, they've looked at the possibilities all along but when it comes to exploring a trade, there's not much they can do. Unless Jude is suggesting that Paul has found a bidder for Bledsoe that is willing to meet their price and wants to work a sign and trade with us. Otherwise, this is most likely just a bunch of words.

LaCava certainly has been the most negative in his reporting of this situation. I am fine with whatever the Suns choose to do, as long as the best interests of the team are the priority.

I like Bledsoe, and I want him to play here. I think he and Dragic are a great tandem and have been extremely effective together (way more than Bledsoe alone). But I am a Suns fan. I am only a Bledsoe fan if he is a Sun.

Yeah, I dont see how this changes much. The Suns still would have to be well compensated to take part in a trade and I would assume that team would also have to meet Bledsoe's silly contract price.

If ol' Zeke Thomas were still running an NBA team I would think its realistic to find a partner but I'm not sure what front office is that rich, that desperate for a point guard AND has talent else-where to spare.

It might be a negotiating ploy by the Suns. If they would really want to be generous they could say hey, go out there and get us a sign and trade offer, and as long as we don't have to take back salary in the deal, we will either take it or match it.

The perception and impression is that Bledsoe doesn't care if he plays here if he doesn't get his perceived value. I don't see how the threat of a trade motivates Bledsoe whatsoever. My guess is this story is true...the Suns are serious about trading him. At some point the Suns need to move on.

I do agree though the Suns should encourage Bledsoe and his agent to seek a sign and trade for the salary he wants. I bet they get no takers though and that might be the right ploy. I think that would hammer home that he is overvaluing himself.

I don't think it is a threat. It is a means of making a point and trying to come to a resolution. You cannot threaten a sign and trade anyway, because the player has to voluntarily sign and want to go to the other team. This is a concession by the Suns. They are telling Rich Paul to go out there and see what they can get.

I don't think the Suns can just move on except to led Eric walk, and that is not acceptible.

What I meant is that if the rumor is to simply trade Bledsoe in a straight trade, it's going to do nothing to motivate him to sign here. I don't think at this point Bledsoe cares what the Suns do or don't do unless it's accompanied by the money he wants.

In terms of the sign and trade, as stated above, I think if you are going to use any ploy to get him to understand his own value....you encourage his agent to seek a sign and trade scenario for the money he is asking for. It will never happen IMO. I don't think any team wants Bledsoe bad enough to figure out a sign and trade scenario for the max.

Trading him straight up for whatever you can get is moving on. It might be the only viable option at this point. I agree that letting him walk for nothing isn't acceptable but trading him for something is better than nothing.

How can you trade him straight up? Its a sign and trade or nothing. Not sure what you are suggesting here. There are only three options here:

1. Take the QO offer. Its obvious that Bledsoe does not want to do that or his agent would be threatening that already.
2. Sign and trade. Not likely that he can get anywhere close to the money he wants.
3. Negotiate with the Suns.

3 hasn't happened, the agent is now pushing for #2 I assume. The Suns are saying fine, we will be as cooperative as makes sense for us. Go for it. Work out a reasonable win-win and we will do it. Who knows. maybe something will come of it. But I doubt it. There are going to be lots of team that will make offers. "Will give you (Nash, Nene, David Lee, Eric Gordon, Josh Smith, etc)." But the Suns will say politely, we do not want those players (even for free).
