Not according to any numbers I've seen. Where are you coming up with that?

Edit: Just saw your other post. Don't forget the minimum-contract holds, which knock off another $2 million or so.
The cap holds are only $470K each and with Frye signed we have 9 players under contract, so only three holds.

To clarify:

+ 56.1M projected salary cap
- 43.1M committed salaries (all free agents renounced)
- 5.2M Channing Frye (could be up to $6M)
- 1.4M 3 cap holds

= 6.4M cap space

I don't think I'm missing anything above. Of course none of this will matter if we can get a TPE from an Amare trade.

How is putting Amare Stoudemire and Moses Malone in the same sentence not funny? :)

For some reason that makes me think of those stupid elephant jokes that went around a hundred years ago when I was a teenager. What does Amare Stoudemire have in common with Moses Malone - neither one can rebound except for Moses (what does Tarzan's Jane have in common with the elephant - nothing except they're both purple).

I don't know why everyone is so hot on the TPE. IMO, unless you go into it with a possible/probable target in mind it's just pure show. You get the TPE and then when no one of interest becomes available you shrug your shoulders and say, gee, at least we tried. We've already seen them do this a few times. Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on me - but fool me thrice and I must be a Suns fan.

We knock Amare so often for his rebounds but it's in relation to his status as a star and a so called max player. Actually, his rebounding average puts him probably just above average for his position. There are a lot of forwards and centers that average fewer rebounds per game than he does.

Steve

The problem with Amare is consistency. He is either feast of famine. His average is only as high as it is because it's common for him to followup up a 3 rebound game with a 18 rebound game. That is simply unacceptable for a max contract player.

Having said that, I would take him over Warrick's consistently sucky play. A front court of Lopez/Warrick or Lopez/Frye makes me want to puke.

It won't take a TPE, remember the Suns can wait to have Frye ink his deal until after they sign someone and hit the cap, MLE.

I don't see anything wrong with your numbers, so I'm not sure why mine came out differently before, several times. But in any case, I hope you're right. Maybe the Suns will spend the money constructively. Barbosa for an unwanted player on a larger deal could be intriguing.

How about defense? The Gasol pick and roll and Amare overplaying it still flashes in my head. This dude sucks on defense and rebounding and with virtually no passing game its an all or nothing crapshoot with him strictly on point scoring.

I'd rate him as a slightly better than average rebounder and at best, a slightly below average defender. His overall defense gets a little boost from the fact that he does rebound above average (not much, but it's there). He is one of the league's best at drawing fouls and has a decent mid-range game and every offensive move you could want from your big man other than a back to the basket game (and who needs that from their big man?).

The days of well rounded basketball players being the norm will never come again. These guys are much better athletes than ever before but substandard coaching at the earlier levels has really hurt the development of today's player. There are exceptions but they are few and far between. Amare is just a product/symptom of his times and even with his obvious blemishes he rates as one of the best in today's game because the rest of them have similar flaws.

Suns gave 18mil/4y to Warrick. Sarver is a great owner and good at finding bargains.

Jul 02, 2010 11:09 AM EST

The Suns have agreed to terms on a four-year, $18 million deal with free agent forward Hakim Warrick, sources tell Marc Spears of Yahoo!

Warrick played with the Bucks and Bulls during the 09-10 season.

The signing likely signals the end of Amar'e Stoudemire's tenure with the Suns.

Dumb. There was no rush to consummate a deal with Warrick. Limits flexibility with a Amare S&T or a barbosa deal.

I think I'm going to need to refill my prescription for Prozac. I keep waiting for some good news, but it doesn't appear to be happening. Even though it is early and things could still happen, I'm not holding out much hope for a good outcome.

I agree Warrick looks like a bargain. It sounds like the Suns could not work out a sign and trade for Amare.

Why? This is no indication really because they could use the MLE on Warrick. They should still have Amare's rights.

Still our roster is TERRIBLE.

Lose Amare and Amundson and gain Warrick and two 2nd round picks? ROFL

On top of it giving Frye 6M$ per season..

Wow!!!! Did I want Amare gone? NO! At worst I was hoping for a S&T for maybe Lee/Boozer/Scola. I understand a bit where Sarver and Gentry are coming from though. With the way Nash and Dragic play the point, the 7 seconds or even the 12 seconds or less team that we have now and the spreading offense that we have will be here for several years to come. With that Frye and Warrick make sense. It's funny how people are bashing Warrick, when a lot of people on here have been clamoring for him (the same way they were for Stromile Swift). Yes, it's a couple years later that we got him (same with Stromile). Lets all hope that Warrick plays like we know he can, especially with a guy like Nash, and not the shell of what he once was like Stromile was when we signed him.

This does have me a little perplexed though. We could still do a S&T with Amare, just not for a big. Maybe to New York for Chandler.....Chicago for Deng......Houston for Budinger and Brooks....Jersey for one or more of Favors, Harris, Lee, T Will....OKC for Harden and Green....Toronto for Hedo and Belinelli. Something along those line? Possibility? Yes. Probability......next to nil unfortunately

I think--but hope I'm wrong--that agreeing to terms with Warrick means no sign and trade with Amare is possible. We could have retained Amare's Bird rights for a sign and trade and signed Frye with the MLE, but we'd have to renounce Amare's rights to be far enough under the cap to sign anybody else as a free agent--in this case, Warrick. So, instead of a possible trade exception and draft picks (or Scola or anybody else through sign and trade), we renounce Stoudemire's rights on July 8 and sign Hakim Warrick.

Like I said, I hope I'm wrong. Maybe somebody who understands the NBA salary cap better than me can chime in.

I like where the Suns are at the moment. A sign and trade with Amare may still be in the works. If not, Warrick was a good snag. Nash will make him look better just like Frye. Now the Suns have time to explore more moves.

Warrick is a good signing. It is market value and he is a good fit. Overpaying for Frye really hurts but the worst thing is the lack of direction. Making long term investments into role players for a team that will be stuck in mediocrity just doesn't sit well with me.

They just want to make the playoffs and make money somehow. That is the only motivation for those signings.

c'mon man, most of us wanted warrick as depth. or as our pf when we were still running the silly dantoni smallball. no one wanted him as our starting pf or as a part of our pf-by-committee with frye.

if this truly signifies the end of amare with no other moves this franchise is a joke. it will NOT make the playoffs next year unless either lopez or clark make some incredibly quantum leaps in ability. i'm calling that shot right now.

Then we'll get a lottery pick, and isn't that what everyone wants anyway??
