Seriously guys, think about this...and Skelton knows this too...if this guy beats out Skelton, then Skelton has BIG TIME problems. If Skelton goes in and does the job he will be comfortable, just like one of the coaches told him. If he sucks hind tit he has competition.

Do you really expect Skelton to perform competently though?

It's bad enough that he's being thrust into the starting job as a rookie, but now he's going to press because he'll think that two mistakes will get him yanked for a guy that couldn't make an NFL roster...

Trust me the kid is jacked up enough without hearing that he's "in a competition".

If I'm Mike B., I'm going over to Whiz's seat to turn the hearter up to "3".

I've had enough of this crap...

Never let the guy feel to comfortable.
Yet we bitch because none of our QBs have looked comfortable in the pocket (such as it is) this year.

I think there's a happy medium. Name a starter and express confidence in that player's ability to hang on to it by not mentioning it again until you have to.

JMHO

BTW, I also think this thread is over-thought and overreacted.

Our QBs this season are DeWreck Anderson, Max Hall, John Skelton and Richard Bartel and the defending NFC West Champions are 3-9 getting hammered by teams that couldn't even score against the team they played the week before and you say we're overreacting?

there is no competition,...the coaches just let skelton know that if this guy comes in and outplays you, he is getting the job.
Honestly, if this guy CAN come in and outplay skelton in this offense, then we just need to cut skelton right then.

Let me ask you a yes or no question oaken. Please don't qualify your answer.

Do you trust Whiz's ability to correctly access which QB is better?

I think that a great way to motivate and teach a young QB is to let him start but then pull him out for a hurry up "package." Maybe Bartel will be the package.

:sarcasm:

You are asking about a coach who thought Brian St.Pierre and Max Hall could be starting QBs for the Cardinals?

My answer is NO.

I know that. But considering the circumstances of this season we should be excused for overreacting to anything concerning this sad sack situation.

No, not at all,...not in this world or the next, not in some parralell world where folks live in four dimensions and eat rainbow candy washed down with unicorn milk,...not even in my wildest perverted fantasy is this HC qualified to assess the quality of an NFL Quarterback.

This is nonsense. To say that a 5th round draft choice who has not had but one limited opportunity to play has to compete with someone that no one really knows that much about and will be cut if he doesn't excel in one game is totally ridiculous.

The season is lost. Is Bartel the QB of the future? Give Skelton the opportunity to play and MAKE rookie mistakes as long as he shows that he has great skill and can improve.

Anderson will start and Bartel will be second. Otherwise Skel would have been named starter right from the get go.

I'm with Donald and Mitch on this. Competition is great and players should earn their starting spots but this is a stupid way to handle a rookie QB being thrust in to a starting spot. It's not like Skelton is a bonus baby being handed a starting job before the ink is dry on his contract. Stop with the stupid mind games already.

Yep.

or that could just give the Bidwills the ammo to pull the plug

They have the ammo already question is will they bite the bullet financially. I guess they could say that he was fired with cause ala Kiffin if he shows extreme delusional behavior.

If Bartel ends up beating him out for the starting job I will become an incarnation of Salome and ask for Whiz head on a platter

ain't gonna happen

I love salome, especially when it has deer meat mixed in with the pork. :D
