Another thing to remember is how Ayton hurt this team 2 years ago with his PED suspension. That's another reason I don't blame the Suns for playing hardball with the max and any potential escalators. If that happens again then its 50 games and there is no way you want a player like that as a centerpiece on a contender.

Luka and Ayton aren’t playing for the same extensions. Luka made all NBA that puts him in a different category

Ayton wants those built into his new contract and Suns want a flat max, but if I’m the Suns and you make all NBA that’s great for the team that means you’ve turned into the player we wanted you to be.

Sarver is going to Sarver

I've read the Suns want to sign Ayton to the max without the bonuses. However, if he earns the bonuses the Suns have one heck of a player. That shouldn't be a major sticking point.

Best point I've heard about not paying Ayton the rookie max.

It could be the Suns are using a similar situation with John Collins to lower the numbers on Ayton's contract.

Collins signed for 5 years/ $125 million this year.

And I heard this morning that Sarver now won't go higher than 4 years, $110 Million.

I don't know that the whole truth will ever come out, but I do know it looks very bad for the Suns and Sarver, and it pretty much destroys all good will that Monty, James Jones and CP3 worked so hard to build up in the calendar year starting with the Bubble.

Whatever happens with Ayton now, this team has a major PR problem, and if it isn't resolved by the start of the season, this team will have a dark cloud over it for pretty much the entire season. After that, it is anyone's guess as to when...or if...this franchise recovers from that.

He is getting the max. They know it. Ayton knows it. I would be shocked if Ayton's team relents. He is going to get his max then when this contract is up is going to get his max then too. If not by the Suns by someone else. That's barring catastrophic injury or completely regressing.

I'm looking for Robert Sarver's phone number.

Some interesting comments from Monty about Ayton's contract extension talks.

It sounds like the contract extension talks information for Deandre Ayton didn't come from the Suns front office.

They are very good at not leaking information.

It 100% came from Ayton's agent.

If true, that's just dumb. If a player earns those bonuses, the team should be more than happy to open the pocketbook.

This is how you piss off good players

Or it could be negotiating tactics. Michael Porter Jr.'s contract was not all guaranteed.

I don't know what's going on but I believe it would be better to let Ayton walk for nothing than to have his contract upgraded to the super max. I just think the odds are overwhelmingly against you to win it all with a super max on your books. Maybe for a generational great such as prime Lebron but not for your average superstar. Regardless, since all it would do is open us up to the possibility of a super max, if that's the holdup we need to give in.

But more and more sources, probably working from the original story) are wording it as such that Sarver isn't willing to give DA the max. If that's the case, I think we're playing with fire. So obviously I hope that isn't the case and DA signs his max deal here before October 18th.

On the suface it looks that way.

I'm inclined to pay Ayton the max but I will give James Jones the benefit of the doubt for now. This stuff shouldn't have been made public.

This is a bad look going into the season. Anyone who says otherwise is living in Pollyannaland.

From a clearly frustrated and disgruntled Ayton's agent, basically as a last resort to try to get Sarver to come to his senses. (Good luck with that.)

Meanwhile, I heard the Monty quotes on 98.7 FM. He doesn't sound particularly pleased, either.

This thing could end up derailing the season (not to mention the franchise) before it begins.

And how you make other good players not even want to consider playing for you.

Ayton isn't eligible for a SuperMax. He hasn't made an All-Star Team, let alone an All-NBA team. If his current trajectory continues, however, he will do so in the next season or two. Another reason not to screw around with this extension. Once SGA and MPJ got their max extensions, this really became a no-brainer.

The timing isn't good for sure. Too bad it is playing out in the media. I wonder if this has impacted negotiations with Mikal Bridges... I would think so.

I'm still wondering what CP3 and especially Booker are thinking...
