Hahaha Mitch I know you do a lot of research and studying on the draft, but the only time to be this definitive is AFTER the picks have actually taken place.

There are a ton of scenarios where one or both players would be available at the corresponding pick, or even that the Cardinals would trade up with Denver to get the #2 pick. Not to mention from everything I have read neither Buffalo or Cinncinati is very interested in Gabbert for whatever reason.

And I have been doing my research as well;)

It's not necessarily research to think that EVERY team ahead of the Cardinals has a QB conundrum, AF.

In my opinion, it would be preposterous to trade up for a QB that Whiz isn't even going to play for the next two years and possibly more. We all know whatever veteran Whiz signs is going to be the starter, and even Whiz has stated straightforwardly that he does not want the "expectations" that come with drafting a QB early in the draft.

All that and it is still possible that Whiz, like I and others on the board, actually like John Skelton's prospects down the line.

I will guarantee you...(1) the Cardinals are not trading up; (2) Gabbert will not be available wheh we pick at #5; (3) the player we take will be a defensive player or one of the vaunted WRs.

Whiz has stated emphatically the he want a player at #5 who can make an immediate impact.

I will also guarantee you that Brooks Reed will not be on the board at #38 and that it is a pipe dream to think he will be.

There you go.

Want to bet a Cardinals t-shirt on all of it? I get one of these wrong and you win. What do you say?

I would say the odds are with you so it wouldn't be a smart bet on my part. I wasn't saying you are wrong and it won't happen.....I just question how definitive you were in your response. To me thats a sure way to look silly at least half the time.

I would also caution against listening to anything Wiz or any HC or front office man is saying right now. And lets play hypothetical and say the Cardinals DO want Gabbert. Don't you think they would do everything to throw everyone off the scent - especially being in the precarious spot of #5 with a couple QB needy teams in front of them.

I'm looking at the actions. The ENTIRE management team went to meet Gabbert for Dinner and work out. I know many said "oh well we were on our way back and Mike flew by there....." but doesn't that sound like the move of a HC who wants his owner to buy in on paying millions to another Top 10 QB? YOu don't hear of Jerry Richardson or Mike Brown making these visits even if its "on the way".....BTW the funniest part about all that, Missouri is about 800 miles out of the way. I am pretty sure if the interest was only cursory, they wouldn't have been dragging Mr. B for a hand shake and a smile type meeting. Conversely what OTHER prosect has Mr. B ever met?

And what about Gabberts profile would Wiz not like? Hes a football diehard who has worked his butt off - neglecting most everything else - and also has the physical attributes of a Top QB pick. He's also a absolute gym rat, well liked by his teammates, and very cerebral. And with all those tremedous gifts, he still works like hes 5'4 Max Hall. I would venture to say hes the Anti Matt Leinart.

So you are right. Maybe Cinnci or Buffalo or another team that does trade up sees all those same things and makes this all moot. But I'll tell you how I have my mock going as of right now and I'll explain the picks...

1. Cam Newton - Carolina - Carolina needs not only a QB but a face of the franchise. The beloved Southern QB in Cam Newton makes this pick a no brainer.
2. Marcel Dareus - Denver - Denver needs defensive help. They get the bet dlineman.
3. Von Miller - Buffalo - Gailey wanted the rough and tumble runner in Newton who can also throw through a blizzard, but with him gone instead goes with the pass rushing demon.
4. AJ Green - Cinnci - This is a wild card no doubt, but Mike Brown NEVER gives in to being held hostage and I bet he thinks he can convince Palmer to relax if he switchs out Ocho for this soon to be star....

Or I could seem them going Fairley too. But I don't think Gabbert is the pick here for a bunch of reason, most of all which is there has been tepid response from the Bengals about him from the local beat writers in Ohio.

In fact see how many Mocks you can find, with Gabbert going to Cinnci.

As for Reed, he has a low first round grade and the things with good teams like GB and New England is ....well they can truly draft BPA. We have no clue who that might be as someone drops and frankly I am not sure OLB is a priority at all for the Packers.

And I have watched Reed play up close for the past 4 years. He's a great player, but I am not sure he is the first round lock you make him out to be. The transition to OLB won't be easy, and is a big reason literally dozens of players fall into that 2nd or 3rd round range, as they are making the position switch.

So could you end up being right? Sure.

I just take exception with you saying theres "no chance"....in fact I don't see it playing out your way at all.

But it could. And my willing to say that is the difference in our two posts :)

I will make one bet with you though. There is not a SNOW BALL'S CHANCE IN HELL that the Cardinals will draft a WR at #5. I can't believe you or anyone who avidly watches the NFL seriously see that as a possibility.

Now see you got me being all definitive ;)

I don't think it matters if we take a QB at #5 or not: I think we'll likely still go after Bulger (or another vet) when FA kicks in...and we'll go after that vet with the idea that he's the starter in 2011.

But if you were a vet like Alex Smith or Marc Bulger, would you come here knowing that you 1) had less competitive roster situations in 2011 and 2) are going to have a #5 overall pick breathing down your neck? Of course not! Why would they?

There are 2 legitimate starting QBs on the free agent market and 2 legitimate QB prospects in the draft. There are 6 or 8 teams with immediate needs at the quarterback position. To think that you're going to be able to acquire 2 of the 4 starting quarterback options in this market is folly.

IMO, any talk of Gabbert being an option is to get Buffalo or Cincy to trade out of the Top 5 so that we can take Von Miller at #5 when two QBs go in the Top 4.

Well I doubt Whiz wouldn't play Gabbert for 2 or more years. He put Skelton and Max Hall in this year so he will play rookies. Bulger is the FA and gets hurt Gabby might just go in. Brodie Croyle is the FA signed and stinks up the joint then Gabby might just play.

Your memory and research is exceptional but I don't remember Whiz stating he doens't want the expectations that come with drafting a QB early.

All that and it is still possible that Whiz, like I and others on the board, actually like John Skelton's prospects down the line.

I think he does as well but he didn't appear over joyed with Skeltons performance. Whiz has stated that they need to acquire a QB this year so he isn't sold on Skelton.

I will guarantee you...(1) the Cardinals are not trading up; (2) Gabbert will not be available wheh we pick at #5; (3) the player we take will be a defensive player or one of the vaunted WRs.

Smart money says we won't trade up but I wouldn't bet more then a dollar on that. AZfinest covers this perfectly so I won't go into it much. I do agree that Gabbert won't be there at 5 because someone will trade up to get him.

Whiz has stated emphatically the he want a player at #5 who can make an immediate impact.

This is very true and not consistent with his rookies not starting right away. Smoke screen. :)

I will also guarantee you that Brooks Reed will not be on the board at #38 and that it is a pipe dream to think he will be.

Again I think your right but never say never.

Bulger might if he doesn't care much about playing past 2011. A chance to pick up one more nice payday before retiring.

That's the other thing. If the Cards are going to guarantee Blaine Gabbert $30 million, are they really going to guarantee another $12-15 million for Marc Bulger?

Also, do you really want a QB who doesn't feel like he has a future after one year? You're not making a very convincing case for Bulger. :D

You also have to think the other way with Bulger in that he'd want to go out with a bang instead of a whimper and would give you a solid season.

The Cards got Anderson for $3.25 million guaranteed. Bulger signed with the Ravens for $3.5 million. Why do you think they'd have to guarantee Bulger almost Warner money? Bulger hasn't had a decent season in 4 years and didn't play at all last year. Will he be that much in demand?

If the Cardinals draft Gabbert at #5...you do everything you can to make him the starter asap.

The market sets the rate. There wasn't close to the amount of desperation at the QB position last year as there is this year.

Anderson was brought in to be the #2. When he reached PT benchmarks, the worst quarterback in the league in 2009 ended up making $8 million. Bulger won't be the #2 for someone; he'll be their presumptive starter.

A two-year deal for $25 million with $12 guaranteed? No one is saying that Bulger wants to "go out with a bang" or only has a year left.

I sure seem to remember rumors about Bulger not really having a strong desire to keep playing.

If Bulger really doesn't have that much interest in playing why wouldn't he want to retire after one more big pay day and put up some decent numbers on the way out?

Of course I don't think Bulger has even one year left. $12 million guaranteed for a guy who hasn't had a decent season since 2006. What is this Major League Baseball where utility infielders batting .225 make $5 million?

Sure, that's what you TRY to do with all of your first round picks. But the reality is that he's probably not the best option -- which is why I think the Cards will still try and sign a vet to start in 2011 regardless of whether they draft a QB at #5 or not.

Money talks. Plus, I don't think there will be all that many teams clamoring for Bulger, and guys like he and Hasselbeck know that they don't have that many years left in them anyways. A 2 year deal with the potential for another payday after the Cards are done with them is probably attractive.

Bulger is 34 yrs old and must know that he has 2 maybe 3 seasons as a starter left. That fits in well with want we need to develop Skelton and Gabbert.

He wants to go to a team with a good running game and defense. Well Whiz will have to do a wonderful sales job to convince Bulger that is what we will be.

It will be interesting to see what transpires with the draft taking place before FA. Will there be a big demand of vet QB's with the number of rookie QB's that will be drafted this year.

McNabb goes to the Vikings. They won't need to give up much for him.

VY to the Dolphins since he is the perfect QB for the wild cat.

#7 is Shanahans reclamation project plus he has Grossman. :)

Broncos are fine with Orton as the starter and continuing the development of Tebow.

Bengals are going to draft a QB in rd 2 as their starter.

Panthers draft Cam.

Seahawks will trade for Kolb.

49ers start Alex Smith this year and draft a QB in rd2 or 3.

Bills like Fitzpatrick so they wait to pick up a QB in rd2 to develop.

Bulger will beggin us to come on board since all the jobs will be filled in the draft. ;)

Jeff Risdon says he's 95% sure the first 5 picks are

Newton
Dareus
Miller
Green
Gabbert

Says he's about 80% sure the next two picks are

Quinn
Peterson

Then stuff gets crazy and no one can predict it, and anybody that says they can is lying.

Which probably can't happen this season regardless of how good he is, unless a CBA is in place ASAP. People need to realize that the loss of an offseason will kill the idea of any rookie starting for their team. It isn't rocket science, folks.

I'm one hundred percent sure you are having trouble telling the difference from what you WANT to happen and what WILL happen. ;)

I actually love the idea of all three of those guys at #5 being available because those are my top 3 choices, and that NEVER happens. Love Quinn, love Peterson, and am starting to buy into Gabbert.

Guess we'll see what happens, although I am confused why so many posters are so absolutely positive that with arguably the best QB available at #5, and a team needing a QB more then any other Cardinal team ever has - why the team will defintely go defense.

More fodder that Cinnci won't be drafting Gabbert

Because the top-end QB class this year sucks, and people are pimping a QB that had a 6.71 YPA and only 16 TD passes in a pass-happy offense in his last year as 'The Guy'. No thank you!!!

If Newton or Gabbert are there at 5, I think the Cards have to take them. I have come around to hope that Gabbert is the guy I would like to see in Cardinal red.

With the new CBA there will probably be a rookie wage scale and it might not be as big a risk in years past. Just my 2 cents worth, which I know isn't worth much :)
