I guess we'll have to see. Last year I felt they overachieved. This year they are doing the same.

I'll be surprised if Newcastle qualifies for the Europa league or better this year.

Last year they didn't overachieve--they were fighting against falling into the relegation zone for a long time. That is not overachieving for Newcastle United.

They won't make the Europa this season. They've been crushed by injuries--another Pardew problem--Ashley won't invest in January, and we lose Tiote, Cisse, and Abeid to the African Cup of Nations for possibly a month.

Yeah, Pards has hurt the squad through injury mismanagement. The most glaring one was young firecracker Rolando Aarons. The physio was off duty, and Aarons wasn't supposed to return for the cup clash with Man City. Pards cheated and said he slipped him in when he wasn't supposed to. Yeah, great, we beat City on the back of an Aarons' goal (we lost to Tottenham to leave the cup), but Aarons only played a handful of minutes after and has been out for months since. Absolutely idiotic.

Unacceptable result. Carver made the same ridiculous decision to start Gouffran, who once again contributed nothing and disappeared into obscurity. The Riviere selection was a good one, and the team came out in cracking form, leading to a 2-1 halftime lead. Okay, we had an own goal, but nobody's fault but Dummett's--then again, Haidara should be at Left Back over Dummett, so another selection failure that cost us.

Then, whatever failures Pardew had in motivating the team at half time seem to have continued with Carver, when the team came out flatter than a bottle of Coke left open for a week. I mean, they struck the post or crossbar 4 times, AND scored two goals. We should have lost. Then in the last 10 minutes we nick a goal to go up 3-2. We should have held that at all costs. Instead we coughed up the lead, again, like a bunch of sissies.

So, yeah, sorry Carver. You had your shot to make a case for becoming the next manager. You absolutely flubbed it. A 3-3 draw is a terrible result here, no matter the tough situation you found yourself in. Instead of a caretaker role for the rest of the season, I predict we'll go for a new manager after the Leicester FA Cup tie.

Carver's just another Ashley muppet who can't be trusted around this team. This should be his last game in charge. He actually claimed that he fielded the best team possible. His excuses are laughable, lame, and just as bad as Pardew's.

Ugh. Out of the FA Cup in an ugly fashion, yet again. Fairly safe from relegation, needing only 13 points to reach the magic 40, and we have absolutely nothing to play for. We're not reaching the CL or Europa League without a massive boost in the transfer window, and we'll probably sell to weaken the team anyway. Nothing left to root for now but landing a good manager (head coach, more like) :(

Say what you want about Pardew--and I think he's not a good tactical coach--but the man has class. He could have lambasted Mike Ashley with no consequences, and nobody could have blamed him for it. Yet he left with class, and I'll salute him for it.

The man has class.... are you kidding me.

The man who called another manager a c***, tried to punch another, pushed a fourth official, headbutted an opposition player to name but a few. You don't think there was some money and agreement involved in the deal that let him get out. Pardew is the most classless manager I can think of in the league at the moment. He thinks he is king dick... He isn't.

This anecdote sums him up perfectly....

“When the gaffer sat down with his backroom team, deciding on his order, he asked fitness coach Tony Strudwick what he was getting – and told him he’d take it if it looked good.

“When the meals arrived, Pards said to Tony, ‘Yours looks better, I’m having that,’ and swapped plates.

“I told him you can’t just take someone else’s dinner. Pards retorted, ‘When you’re the king, you can do anything’.”

Sorry, I should have rephrased that--he left with class. I don't know about everything you said, but you're right about a lot of it lol

Wow, a really clever surprise corner puts Chelsea up very much against the run of play at the half. I expected nothing out of this game--nothing at all--but we came out strong and took the game to Chelsea. Struck the post/crossbar corner even. I've gone from not expecting anything to feeling hard done by lol A brilliant individual play by Willian, finished off very well.

I'll have to hope for an equalizer in the 2nd half, but there's not much hope there. We're terrible at halftime adjustments, and Chelsea are, well, not :)

Okay Carver, do not DARE start Dummet at LB (CB is fine) or put Gouffran in the starting lineup. Show some frickin' sense, if you want the damn job.

Edit: Well, he got it half-right. Dummett's at CB with Haidara at LB, which is the best we can do at those positions right now. Unfortunately, he still has Gouffran in the lineup rather than Ameobi. Neither are top choice, but with injuries, Ameobi should be in the lineup instead of useless Gouffran, every time.

Newcastle were clearly cheated out of a draw by a horrific non-penalty call in injury time. Announcers and the studio agreed it was a clear hand ball with the ref right on top of the play. A real shame--the ref had a great game, but one idiotic gaffe like that earns him consideration for exclusion from the next round of fixtures.

Strangely enough, this game went a weird way. Southampton, clearly a better team, suffered from fatigue and injuries (though our injuries are just as bad), and we absolutely bossed the game--outshot them by 3-1 and had the lion's share of possession. Hard to blame Carver for this one, since he had the team ready and raring to go.

Sadly, the usually smart decision--Dummett at CB--backfired. He was lazy and lacking and in large part to blame for the 2nd goal. His selection turned out to be a bad decision, although Will-o might not have been any better.

Gouffran, always lazy and lacking in any kind of contribution not only got a goal (okay, a lucky one he had little to do with, but still a goal) and played with energy and strength. Yeah, he missed on a clear header, which is emblematic of his usual problems, but he played well on the main.

Gutted by the horrific ref disaster to cheat us of a penalty. We played well and deserved the point, and were cheated out of it. But Southampton's a top team, and they tend to snatch points out of bad games. Credit to them.

This is why Carver won't, and shouldn't, get the job. Invites pressure all game, gets lucky we don't concede. We get a goal, can't put the game away, give up the late equalizer. Points dropped. I'm sorry, Mr. Geordie, but you're not the man for the job.

A disgraceful coaching performance, and a lackluster playing performance. Carver starts a lineup heavy on offense, but sets them up in a defensive posture, allowing Crystal Palace to boss the ball. We squeak in a goal on a magnificent moment of brilliance between Sissokho and Janmaat, and Janmaat and Cisse. 2nd half? Let Crystal Palace do what they want.

Here's where it gets gutless, and I mean absolutely gutless. As soon as Palace level the game, boom, star striker Cisse out, defensive midfielder Abeid in. Playing for the point? Even worse, soon, our OTHER striker, Perez, is replaced with a THIRD FRICKING CENTER BACK.

Pathetic. I almost wished we'd have lost, Carver became such a chicken. t's not like we were against Man City or Chelsea here. With a coach as spineless as this against Crystal Frickin' Palace, we're not going to do much the rest of the season.

Carver's selections have been a shambles. Not a good lineup to run out against Man City.

Oh look, keeping the tiny offensive-minded midfielder with no offensive talent in the lineup led to him giving up a penalty in the first minute of the game. BANG UP IDEA KEEPING ANITA IN THE LINEUP OVER ABEID, YOU EFFING MORON CARVER!!!

Carver, prepare your resume, because you'll be looking for a job shortly. Even Jabba the Ashley can't justify keeping you on in a muppet--er, head coaching role--at the end of the season.

Carver out BEFORE the end of the season :(

Oh, and some of those players should be benched, no matter that we only have 4 healthy defenders, and no matter if they're stars or not. Sissokho, Williamson, I'm looking at you.

Cisse--well done, man, well done. You played your heart out throughout that entire debacle, and almost scored when given less than scraps to go on. Hold your head high, Cisse.

To be fair, you didn't have a chance after Anita screwed up. Shocked that Cisse didn't score.

Let's be realistic. With Carver and his woeful selection and tactics, we didn't have a chance before Anita screwed up.

I'm not shocked Cisse didn't score. He only sniffed service twice, and those were two half-chances. He almost scored a spectacular goal though.

Yeah, he's such a good striker you kind of expect those to always go in. Would have been a heck of an amazing volley, though.

Man, I still remember that side-footed volley v Chelsea. WOW!

That goal never gets old.

That goal never gets old.

It reminded me of the Tim Cahill strike during the WC. I liked James Rodriguez's shot too, but I was shocked this wasn't goal of the tournament.

Much better selection from Carver today, with Abeid and Obertan in for useless Anita and Gouffran. I don't really like dropping Perez, who has a touch of class, but we can give Riviere a chance. A win v Villa is a MUST toady.

Well, it wasn't pretty, and it certainly wasn't convincing, but Janmaat and Cisse's combined moment of brilliance took the three points for us. I will take it.
