Okay, cool. I hope I can watch it, if my schedule allows. It's home and home, away goals having more weight than regular goals, right? Penalties after extra time in game 2 if it's still drawn with equal away goals?

It is a home and away series with Goal differential as the decider if each team wins a game. Not sure if away goals have more weight or not.

I read up on it. Goal differential settles it, otherwise you go to extra time then penalties. Away goals, unlike in other competitions, means nothing.

REALLY frustrated that it's not televised over here. I looked and couldn't find it.

Neither could I. Maybe later in the week they will have it being on BEIN network Satruday

Benitez stays! The Rafalution continues :)

Ashley wisely stated that every penny of the Premier League money and the transfer money would be made available. Reports say he was blown away by how prepared and in control Rafa seems, and wanted to do what it took to keep him on. Now I'm keen to see what business Rafa does in the summer window.

That is good news. They have some work to do to add some players. The support is there!

This is the big weekend. Sunday specifically for Newcastle. Should be interesting to see how they fair at St James vs a spurs side that are known for their road woes at times. I hear yedlin will be out which is unfortunate. It would have been nice to see him have a shot to stick it to Poch who could use yeddy right about now.

What interests me with this matchup is that neither team spent money in the transfer market. I have a feeling the supporters of one of these sides will be in a full panic for transfers after this match. Newcastle has been outspent by Huddersfield town and Brighton. Wtf???

Don't even get me effing started, man! We have a net outlay of 17 million. 17 effing million! Rafa is SUPPOSED to have every penny to spend, but the rumor is that Ashley has been 'scared' of the prices in the market. It's called the market setting itself, you effing muppet! You're supposed to be a businessman! Word is that Rafa is committed because he loves everything from the team to the fans, but that he's hugely disillusioned with the rest of the management. We missed out on early transfers from haggling over pennies on the pound, and it has severely cost us.

That said, we've made what seem like some quality additions. Lejune looks like a great find as a huge, ball-moving CB. Manquillo has looked really good, which is a relief, given Yedlin's short-term injury. Murphy should be a real threat on the wing and, once settled, Merino looks the real deal. Spurs have horrendous injury problems and haven't strengthened either (weakened, rather), to the point where Sissokho might be playing a wing back role! We crushed them at SJP the last game of the season a while back, and tend to do well against them. My gut says we have no chance, but we really do have a shot at a result of some kind. I'd kill for a point, honestly. After Spurs, we don't have a top-6 finishing team until November!

Everything is there for Newcastle. They just need a signing to get their fans amped up about. Yeah they will have to overpay. But so does everyone else. That is the market today bottom line.

Yeah the spurs transfer window has been very disappointing compared to the other top England clubs. They are banking on their current roster but as you pointed out they sold walker to a rival. They have had the opportunity to get players but they do not want to pay either. Or they are still waiting on something. It could be a disappointing year for spurs if a key player or two are not fit.

Ugh, and Jabba the Ashley opens his stupid, fat gob today to defend himself and his indefensible actions. TWO DAYS before we open the season. He couldn't have spoken sooner in the summer or just held his tongue? Idiot! He swears he's let Rafa have every single penny, but there's nothing much there. Uh, hey, Jabba, we MADE over 30 million LAST summer in player sales, you refused to buy in the winter window, and we've had a net spend this summer of only 17 million. THAT DOESN'T ADD UP, YOU EFFING MUPPET!!! I get that payments might be tiered and paid out at intervals, but that goes both ways. With all the TV money and profit from player sales, we damn well have a metric crap ton of money in the bank.

Giving Rafa every penny to spend indeed. If we don't bring a striker--two is what we really need--and a creative CM in before the window closes, we'll be in a relegation fight, and Jabba the Ashley will be proven a liar once again.

Cripes! It's like when I chose to be a Cards fan in '88. I must be a masochist :(

Overall I am disappointed in a lot of the clubs here. Other than Manchester United who are on another level so that's probably not fair....it seems like all of these clubs seem to be very Careful about the market. I've read different things but you see big tele deals and stadiums being built as well as not many empty seats. It's very difficult to get a premier match ticket in many parts unless you want to pay a fortune. It's hard to imagine why these clubs are not willing to spend like the other top clubs in the world are. But they all claim to be losing money.

Well, that's a nightmare start to the season. Strangely enough, though, I'm going to take a ton of positives from this loss.

First off, Spurs had nothing in that game. NOTHING. Dummett off to injury, Lejune off to injury (more on that tackle in a bit), and Spurs had NOTHING. One of the top teams in the league, facing a promoted side with 1/2 of its defense subbed out within the first quarter of the game, and they had NOTHING.

If not for an infinitesimal offsides call--a correct call--Gayle earns a clear penalty, and Newcastle are ahead. If not for it being one of the top players, Spurs are playing with ten men. Kane should have been sent off ten times out of ten. Scissors tackle from behind. Like the announcers said, if that's Shelvey tackling Kane, he gets sent off without a moment's hesitation. On top of that, Lejune looked like real quality, and that dirty ass tackle takes him out due to injury. So, it could have been Newcastle up 1-0 with Spurs playing with 10 men, and that probably would have been that.

But...BUT...to hearken back to that Shelvey anecdote, the lad absolutely lost his head to get sent off. Let's be honest--he's a real quality player, but he's got two very bad negative qualities--he's dirty, and he can be stupid. I hate the dirty, and loathe the stupid. If you're going to be dirty, at least be smart about it, though. Ugh. Killed the game, and killed us for three more games, because who else do we have at creative midfield? Diame? Merino? Thanks a lot for killing Rafa's attempts to build a quality squad, Jabba the Ashley. Way to live up to your word--NOT.

Yeah, when you go down to 10 men against Spurs, especially with 1/2 of your defense out, you're going to lose. You should lose big, which Newcastle didn't do, and you should fall to pieces, which they didn't do either, which is even more credit to the side Rafa has put together. Fair play to Spurs for the 2-0 win. Aside from what should have been a Kane red (which, because he's a star, I wouldn't expect to happen unless he literally kills someone), absolute fair play to Spurs. They weren't great, but they ground Newcastle down when they had the numerical advantage, and they got the result.

So, Spurs had nothing in the game, at all, and I had every confidence in Newcastle getting a result until the Shelvey red. Rafa had them playing tight and smart tactically, trying to hit on the break. Hell, Newcastle had chances down 1-0, and even down 2-0, so I have no fear when playing lesser opponents, or even playing top teams at times.

A nightmare start. Hopefully the injuries aren't too bad. Hopefully Yedlin is passed fit this week. Hopefully someone steps in for Shelvey for the two league games he's out. Hopefully Shelvey gets a severe talking to and makes it right going forward. And hopefully this wakes Jabba the Ashley up to the realities of what Rafa and this squad need before the window slams shut.

Still and all, I can't help but take some real positives from this game. Newcastle don't play another side from last year's top 6 until November, so Rafa should rake in some points between now and then.

For me that was a disappointment of a match. Dull is the best way to describe for me. Perhaps to be expected, but Neither side looked like they had a goal in them until Shelvey got sent off and then you knew it was going to finish the way that it did. But still disappointing because it may have opened up late if level. And yes perhaps Newcastle missed out on a result because spurs looked unsure in their final third. They can be had on the counter when they struggle to finish.

I thought this would be a struggle for spurs. Not the easiest tasking to open at st James. look at all of the other difficult and sloppy matches to start the league. Perhaps it's nerves. For me the Newcastle players gave effort and the injuries are a shame. It was physical and There were late tackles. Kane's was stupid and later Ritchie's on Ali from behind was stupid as well. But the Shelvey stomp takes the cake and will always be a red even if Kane does it too.

Yes right or wrong there are a lot of poorly articulated excuses from Ashley. But I'll play devils advocate. if his goal is indeed to stay and be mid table he may have to put on a shirt and tie himself to the goal posts. At the end of the day I hope Newcastle do well. They have a lot of great momentum. No shame in losing to spurs aside from Shelvey...

Yeah, Ritchie's was stupid too. Ali is an ass, who clearly goes out there to wind people up. Well, you sometimes don't get carded for winding up, but you do get sent off for stomping on someone lol So, yeah, Ali didn't cover himself in glory there, but his tactics worked to perfection, so fair play to him.

Ali got sent off in a match last year for a post whistle skirmish if I recall

Joselu in on the cheap. Not a dynamite signing, but we could use a big holding striker, and he's been hot in the preseason. From a numbers perspective it makes sense too, because we desperately needed a striker.
