I like this signing, too. CB depth and Return man

Darrell Hunter
Height: 5-11
Weight: 206
40-yard dash: 4.28
Overall grade: 5.3
Position rank: 21

CB, Miami (OH)
War Room analysis
Strengths: Has blazing speed, good height and an excellent build. Closes well on the ball. Shows good range in zone coverage and enough speed to recover from mistakes. Shows good awareness and ball skills. Has improved playmaking ability. Fights for the ball, and shows good leaping ability and hands. Can contribute on special teams.

Weaknesses: Must improve footwork. Does not move fluidly, and looks stiff at times. Could be exposed by fast-paced, complex NFL offenses. Must add bulk and strength. Must become more aggressive against the run and improve tackling skills. Is inconsistent in coverage, and gets caught peeking into the backfield.

Bottom line: Hunter has the physical attributes to be a good cornerback, and he surprises opponents with his speed and ball skills. But he doesn’t have good technique and lacks the mechanics to excel at the next level. He has experience as a kick returner, which will increase his value. He is a late sixth-round selection.

Dan Pompei analysis
Is a size/speed prospect. Has a good build, and runs well. Lacks instincts and awareness. Doesn't play the ball well. Had a bad Senior Bowl.

The Cardinals have already signed

CB Darrell Hunter, Miami (Ohio)

QB Micheal Spurlock, Mississippi

DE A.J. Schable, South Dakota

As undrafted free agents

Add Greg Lee WR from Pittsburgh to that list per Ben Maller

Pitt receiver Greg Lee, whose junior season was marred by drops and a lack of productivity, will have to make an NFL team the hard way via a free-agent tryout with the Arizona Cardinals. Thirty-three receivers were taken in the draft. Lee had hoped to be taken on the first day of the draft, in the first three rounds. "I'm very disappointed," Lee said last night. Lee, who will be reunited with Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona, said he does not regret his decision to come out early.

From BRS - (Note - Don't expect PFW's Nawrocki to get any Christmas cards from Hunter. See Nawrocki's write up midway down the following):

Darrell Hunter, Miami (O.)
Ht - 5117
Wt - 206
40 - 4.45
BP - 8 (???)
10 - 1.58
20 - 2.63
VJ - 36
BJ - 10-3
SS - 4.14
LS - --
3C - --
WUN - 16

BRS: *May not have be the entire package right now, but his deficiencies appear to be the kind that can be "coached out" of him, and with his size/speed ratio, he'd be a great first day pickup for a team who can afford to hold open a roster position, keep the seat warm & wait a year or two for him to blossom.

Senior Bowl Practice Notes - GBN - Hunter, on the other hand, lacked Hill’s natural fluidity; he also looks a little thick for a CB, but the speedy Hunter – he reportedly runs in the sub-4.35 range – stuck with the receiver all morning; in particular, Hunter had Oklahoma’s Wilson blanketed on a deep post off play action in the 11-on-11 action.

PFW (Nawrocki): *Classic underachiever who lacks the focus, dedication, competitiveness and toughness to become the shutdown corner his natural ability could allow him to be...a lot of his flaws cannot be corrected...inconsistency could get a team beat. Will probably be overdrafted due to his measurables...but it will take a heart transplant for him to brcome a player...(some teams hope they will get the chance to play against him)...has size, smooth movement skills, foot quickness, agility and pure speed to lock down receivers...very natural athlete with rare measurables...but he's non-competitive...does not play to timed speed...lacks passion for the game...does not play with urgency...thinks he is better than he is and talks too much...lazy and immature...does not like to work...medically cleared to play in Senior Bowl but chose not to...marginal instincts and ball skills...struggles trying to locate ball...soft tackler...inconsistant...beaten like a drum by Martin Nance repeatedly in practice...very limited production in pass-happy conference.

ESPN Scouts Inc. -
Pluses: *Impressive measurables. Adequate height - well-built. Very good top-end speed. Good closing burst when the ball is in the air. Adequate-to-good awareness and ball skills. Improved his playmaking skills. Good range in zone coverage - speed helps him make up for some mistakes. He has the size/speed ratio to match up on the perimeter if he continues to improve his recognition skills and consistency. Some experience returning kicks and flashes explosiveness in that area.

Minuses: *Still must improve his overall consistency in coverage. Gets caught peeking in the backfield at times. Footwork is just decent and he has a tendency to open up too quickly. Fast but lacks a bit of fluidity in his hips and will lose more in transition than he should. Good size but lacks great strength and aggressiveness in run support. Must fill harder and improve his tackling skills.

In a Nutshell: *Flying under the radar right now and not likely to get picked on much, but he racked up six interceptions over the course of the last two seasons and is known as the fastest player in his program's history. Should solidify a spot late on Day-1.

Sporting News War Room - Blazing speed, good height and an excellent build. Closes well on airborne passes. Good range in zone coverage and enough catch-up speed to recover from mistakes. Good awareness, ball skills and improved playmaking ability. Fights for the ball. But must improve footwork. Does not move fluidly, and looks stiff at times. Could be exposed by fast-paced, complex NFL offenses. Must add bulk and strength. Must become more aggressive against the run and improve tackling skills. Can be inconsistent in coverage, and gets caught peeking into the backfield. Has the physical attributes to be a good NFL CB . Will surprise opponents his speed and ball skills. Experience as a kick returner, which will increase his value. Projects as a late-Round 3 pick but could move up.

Another potential Cardinal, per draft crazy @ KFFL. This guys been on the mark so far.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Safety | Senior | Penn St. Chris Harrell
Height: 6-0 3/8 | Weight: 209 | 40-Time: 4.74

Official Bio

Strengths:
Very tough and physical...Big hitter who excels versus the run...Playmaker with a knack for being around the action...Smart and instinctive...Has a lot of special teams potential...A hard worker and team leader with excellent intangibles.

Weaknesses:
Does not have elite timed speed...Is not very quick or agile...Lacks great range...Struggles in coverage...Can be too aggressive at times...Doesn't intercept many passes...Has durability and health issues that will need to be checked into.

Notes:
Suffered a neck injury in spring practice and missed the 2004 season...Good college player but is limited as a pro prospect...Does not have the physical tools and measurables you look for but could make it as a backup and special teamer.

War Room analysis
Strengths: Is a hard-working, high-intensity strong safety who is comfortable playing between the tackles. Can get off blocks and get to the ball carrier. Is intelligent; reads plays quickly to compensate for a lack of elite speed and quickness. Is good in the middle of the field and matches up well when covering tight ends. Can be a force on special teams.

Weaknesses: Lacks adequate measurables, especially speed and agility. Doesn’t make smooth cuts in transition and loses ground on receivers because of poor hip rotation. A serious neck injury ended his 2004 season and raises durability concerns.

Bottom line: Harrell lacks the prototypical athletic ability. He is an accomplished run defender and solid tackler, which make him attractive as a special teams player. However, his limited coverage ability could make him a late-round selection or free agent.

I have a hard time believing Parham and Phillips are still unsigned. Probably getting quite a few phone calls and waiting on the best offer.

Perhaps Blackstock and Brown can convince Parham to go to AZ.

Per the war room video the Cards almost drafted Hunter in round 7.

He should make the squad as a cornerback and could play some free safety or push someone else to that position.

From KFFL: Joe Flanagan, of BTI Sports Advisors, has confirmed to KFFL Miami (Ohio) CB Darrell Hunter ran a time of 4.28 and 4.36 seconds at his team's Pro Day workout Thursday, March 23. :hairraise

review of McCareins

per rival.com's Frank Coyle:

Pros: McCareins has quick footwork with excellent ball reactions, leaping and ball skills that allows him to break up numerous passes and make many big plays. He displays fine ball skills that enabled him to lead the nation in interceptions as a senior. He can physical in press coverage and likes to gamble to make plays. He is confident in his athletic ability to cover any receiver. In run support, he is a sure tackler who gets off blockers and can come up and stop the runner. He has the good natural cover instincts and developed anticipation skills that NFL corners must have to succeed. Over his career, he has also returned kicks and lined up at wide receiver, showing playmaking ability in those roles. He has good recovery speed, quickness and leaping skills to possibly compete for a starting job in time, but he should be a valuable role player in the dime packages.
Cons: Missed the 2003 season with academic problems.
Numbers: McCareins (5-11¼, 193) ran his 40s in 4.57 and 4.60 seconds at Princeton’s pro day. He also ran the short shuttle in 4.22, the long shuttle in 10.93 and the three-cone drill in 6.50. In addition, he had a 32.5-inch vertical jump a 9-foot-7 broad jump and 18 lifts.
Skinny: He has a fine upside if he develops within a system and is a quick study to pick up a new defensive scheme. He is a developing cover man with natural athleticism and fine functional strength to continue to progress as a pro. He is a nickel corner with some development and excellent late pick or high-priority free agent. One of the best small-college prospects.

What is with all the WRs? You'd think we had enough for camp already.

I'd rather see more DBs personally.

Maybe they're trying to find a return man. What ever happened to Dan Sheldon?

Damarius Bilbo Grade: 3.29
Position: WR
Class: Sr
School: Georgia Tech
Conference: Atlantic Coast
Ht., Wt.: 6-2, 214
40 Time: 4.68
Grading System

BIO: Former quarterback who moved to receiver as a sophomore and posted career-best totals of 36/488/2 last season.

POSITIVES: Big strong athlete with a developing game. Displays a good sense of timing, improved route-running and comes back to the ball out of breaks. Boxes out opponents with his large frame and extends for the reception, plucking the ball from the air. Nasty blocker who gets results downfield.

NEGATIVES: Not quick releasing off the line and takes a while to get it going. Must improve his footwork running routes.

ANALYSIS: A prospect who improved by leaps and bounds last year, Bilbo is a developmental receiver who will offer quarterbacks an enticing target at the next level.

PROJECTION: Early Seventh Round
