Read & React: Very good nose for the ball playing near the line or in space. Plays faster than his timed speed indicates because of his football IQ. Aware and reads misdirection on the edge. Gets his hands up to block passes near the line.

Run defense: Takes good angles to the ball and is a reliable tackler in the open. Stands his ground very well against tackles on either side of the line considering he is undersized. Explodes into double teams. Able to punch and disengage to chase down run plays run to his side, but will be engulfed regularly by NFL offensive tackles. Beats cut blocks with his hands, recovers quickly to chase down the ball.

Pass defense: Displays the speed needed to cover tight ends and running backs downfield and in the flat. Attacks plays in front of him, takes good angles and wraps securely. Aware of screens and can take out a running back before quarterback can throw the ball. Better receivers and tight ends will separate from him using their length. Must improve the fluidity in his backpedal and drop to get into position in coverage. Inexperienced recognizing routes and will need to prove he can make the interception.

Tackling: Always hustles to the ball whether the play is on his side or he needs to chase down the line or downfield. Uses his long arms to wrap up securely, can be explosive enough to knock the ball loose. Doesn't have the size or strength to make a lot of arm tackles. Former special teams ace with a future there because of his speed and willingness to throw his body into the fray.

Pass Rush/Blitz: Relentless pass rusher. Often double-teamed and works through blocks and traffic until the ball is away. Explodes from three-point stance or when standing up, although he will be the last guy off the ball at times. Gets the corner against slower tackles and tight ends, and can push them into the pocket using his lack of height to get under their pads. Strong hands to rip off blocks and force fumbles. Stays balanced after a spin or outside-in move. Nice backfield awareness; stays home on misdirection and can disrupt passing lanes with good vertical and arm length if unable to reach the quarterback. Explodes into running back blocks.

Intangibles: Facing a nine-month rehab, at minimum, after tearing ligaments in his knee at the Senior Bowl. Team captain. Looked up to by younger teammates and respected by all players and coaches. Leader by nature, growing up in Navy household and in junior ROTC while in high school. Pushes his teammates to match his standards in the classroom, weight room and practice field.

Sapp must be a train wreck for the Cards to take a currently injured guy over him.

This guy would have been a 1st or 2nd rounder had he not torn his ACL at the senior bowl. Great pickup...

Schoefield is a great talent. If he didn't get hurt he would've been a late 1st, early 2nd round choice.

He could be a big time pass rusher.

I don't know if it's the best value, and he's a bit of a projection, but if he pans out we have a starter at one of the OLB spots. He needs to rehab and get bigger, and with Lott around that's a possibility.

I had a hunch...

Guy, once he's healed up, could be a BEAST! At this point, you're dealing w/ lots of "red" flags ie; injuries, academics, character. It's a good roll of the dice. Interesting we've passed on Sapp twice now, and no one else has snagged him.

Mike Mayock:

This is a really interesting pick by the Cardinals. He tore his ACL at the Senior Bowl after winning the MVP at the East-West game. This shows how much the Cardinals love his upside, because he probably won't be able to play this season. He's an explosive kid off the edge that will be a designated pass rusher for the Cardinals. It's a very similar pick to what the Patriots did a year ago with WR Brandon Tate, who was a first-round talent that the Pats got in the third round.

Let him study the game hard this season in the film room and see what he can do next year. But one wonders how confident the staff is in Cody Brown

Was this to early? As several have pointed out (cardsfnmd) the Cards didn't have the roster spot open this year for an OLB. Several others (Buckybird) are not satisfied with our pass rushers at this point. If Baggs, Cody, Washington etc don't pan out we already have a potential pass rusher lined up for next year. A need for next year alreay filled.

It seems that the FO is pretty happy with our current talent level.

Tough to not add a player for this year but In Whis I trust.

Has some decent bloodlines...

cousin, Bobby Engram, was a star receiver at Penn State and played in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears ... another cousin, Vonnie Holiday, played football at North Carolina and later in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs

I love the pick. We get a very talented OLB for the future. Mortenson says that some teams had him rated behind Brandon Graham before the knee injury. Also sounds like he's an extremely hard worker who could overcome the injury. Risky pick, but it could pay off very, very nicely.

I like the pick and it's smart. We still get a developmental rusher, and we don't clog up the pass rush rotation since he'll be on IR.

Schofield is beast but the problem is he got a bad injury that will likely put him out for a year. That may impact him quite a bit as it might lessen his explosiveness down the line if he is back healthy i think its a decent pick.
