I still have not bought my flat-screen tv yet. A friend says I should wait it out and buy one at the end of this year, or early next year. He also said I should buy at Costco because if anything happens to the tv down the road, they will take back the tv with no questions.

Your friend has good advice, especially the Costco suggestion. Costco has the most liberal policy, I wish that I would have purchased my TV there.

we bought at costco because it was a great value and we've heard the same about the service there

as for Fox - I have a little $20 deal kind of nestled off the actual TV - I get fox perfectly, but CBS will occasionally flake out - by far my weakest signal, but still usually pretty good - I live out on the westside though, so that could be a difference in how the signal hits

I was able to test the signal strength for each channel using my TV and tweak it a bit - if you can do that, I'd suggest it as it really helped

Just bought the Samsung 5053 - 50" Plasma
Boy what a difference :D

Bought it from Target online and got the 3 year warranty for 79 more bucks.

Wish I would have been able to do this sooner.

I had a good experience with Ultimate Electronics. My Mits DLP had a weird error message. Instead of messing around with a technician coming out to my house they just replaced the TV. Here is the best part...they did it in 2 days!!!!

Does anyone own a LCD TV but does not have digital cable? I asked because I wanted to know how the picture quality is.

Also, a friend does not want to buy an expensive LCD/Plasma/DLP tv so he wants to buy a CRT widescreen TV. Anyone have any suggestions on a good CRT for about $500.00 or so?

I have Direct TV and I still don't get local channels in HD, does anyone know why? They gave me some BS answer about a new Satellite going up last september but nothing. Whats up with that?

Their new SAT is an MPEG 4 SAT. They can compress the signal better and provide more bandwidth. There new HD tuners have MPEG4 capabilities so you can get local channels with that version. If you have the older HD receiver, they are not capable of the new compression so they do not offer local stations in HD. If they did, they would eat up the available bandwidth for the older system. DTV has not been exactly advertising it either because they have been rolling out the new receivers by region. I don't think it's a nationwide roll out yet.

Also, if you notice most of their HD receiver deals are for the older receivers. The price on the new MPEG 4 is higher. If you called them for a deal or bargain you can bet it was for the older HD receiver. I am sure DTV wants to get rid of those before pushing the MPEG 4 receivers. It's available in AZ because I have one of the new ones. Unfortunately, unless you were educated about what was going on, you wouldn't have known what to ask for.

I don't know if this has been discussed, but do I need a high definition computer to make this TV thread high definition?

If you have Direct TV, September 5th should be a circled date, if DTV stays on schedule.

Lots of new HD channels that day.

Nope.:bang: It's very frustrating. I will go into a store like Best Buy and think I have my mind made up and then someone will tell me about a better tv. To complicate things even further, I have been told to buy a set that has 1080p. I went to Best Buy the other day and the Phillips lcd's looked very nice.

If you plan on getting HD-DVD or BluRay (PS3) in the future, you will want 1080p. If you don't plan on getting either for the next 2 or 3 years, save your money and get a TV without it. It's that simple.

I don't plan on buying another set for a while so I think I should look past two or three years. To make things more confusing, I was told I should seriously look at the LG 42LB5D.

Lefty that will never change. You will never get the latest and greatest or if you do it will only be that way for a couple months. Buying an HDTV is sort of like getting married. If you wait until your ready it will never happen.
