Pit bulls from Vick's dogfighting ring go to Utah sanctuary
The Associated Press
Jan. 2, 2008 01:00 PM

RICHMOND, Va. - Twenty-two of the 47 surviving pit bulls seized from suspended NFL star Michael Vick's dogfighting operation headed to a new home in Utah on Wednesday.

The animals left Richmond International Airport aboard a chartered plane en route to Best Friends Animal Society, a no-kill sanctuary in Kanab, Utah.

The move completes the process of relocating the 47 animals to eight rescue organizations across the country. Some dogs will remain in the permanent care of the sanctuaries; others will be trained for possible adoption by the public.

The organizations were recommended by the dogs' court-appointed guardian, animal law expert Rebecca Huss, and approved by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson last month.

Forty-eight pit bulls were seized from the Surry County property, but one was euthanized for medical reasons.

Vick is serving a 23-month sentence for a dogfighting conspiracy. The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback and three co-defendants raised pit bulls and trained them for fighting behind his home. Several dogs that did not perform well were executed.

John Polis, spokesman for the 33-acre Utah sanctuary, said caretakers will observe the animals for at least six months and try to correct any behavioral problems.

Due to halfway house overcrowding, Vick will be released to his home on July 20, 2009.

He has been.

Ah, no. I don't know what the NFL rules are, but you shouldn't get credit for a suspention while you're IN PRISON! A suspension should be punitive, something to make you serve because you've done something wrong. Allowing him to waltz out of prison and directly back into the NFL would show that the NFL has no desire to punish him for what he's done to the game. I don't think Goodell will allow him just to walk back into a camp. I hope he doesn't, anyway.

I bet if he doesn't the Players Union will fight in his behalf.

Jamal Lewis served a four-game suspension as a result of his four-month prison sentance for the cocaine deal.

I would imagine Vick would get a minimum of four games.

I don't think that he has been "suspended" while incarcerated. I think that Stout is correct in assuming that Vick will be suspended at least a year from the NFL.

He was. He is currently suspended indefinitely.

Aug 27 2007.

The NFL has suspended Falcons quarterback Michael Vick indefinitely without pay following his admission of guilt in a dogfighting scheme.

Friday afternoon, a letter to Vick from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said, in part:

"Your admitted conduct was not only illegal, but also cruel and reprehensible" and regardless whether he personally placed bets, "your actions in funding the betting and your association with illegal gambling both violate the terms of your NFL player contract and expose you to corrupting influences in derogation of one of the most fundamental responsibilities of an NFL player."

I'm with Stout on this one. I don't think that the NFL is going to let him play immediately.

In the meantime, if anyone wants to shoot zoo animals like rhinos from their computer, there are ranches in texas devoted to such things.

It's hypocrisy and a fair amount of racism.

Witchhunt ???

I'd pay to see him dropped into pit of attack dogs, if he made it out then I might consider he had paid his dues. Heck I might be willing to push him in myself.

It's ironic to me that people have more regard for pets than human life.

I wasn't a fan of the sentence either, but why do you have to bring race into it? You sound absolutely ridiculous.

Vick broke state and federal law, then essentially spit in the court's face by violating his pretrial and still got significantly less time than the judge could have given him through the guidelines of his charges.

As far as the NFL suspension goes, Goodell is attempting to restore some class and dignity to the league and why anyone blames him is beyond me. These players get paid MILLIONS to play a childrens' game. The least they can do is behave in accordance with the law. The NFL is and should continue to be a PRIVILEGE. Just because you run a 4.50 40 doesn't entitle you to squat.

For once, when something happens to a black person can people not cry racism??? I guess it was those racist black man hating pitbulls who showed up on Mike's doorstep luring him into fighting them amongst each other huh. Horrible post IMO.
