Hey Joe,

Any way you could put the years remaining on the contract on your spreadsheet, would be helpful in determining cap hits of players. Awesome job though, another reason I love this board, posters like you (and many others) going the extra mile.

Warners numbers are in, he got 2 mill in base and 2 mill in bonus. Still dont know Hambricks, Zellners, or Griffiths bonus amount yet so I just left ? for now.

Okeafer - 5 years at 3.5 mill the first 2 years and 4.5 the last 3 years with a 4.5 mill signing bonus. Very cap friendly deal for the later years if it doesnt work out or he gets injured.

Zellner - 2 years - 800K each year, again just like Hambrick I dont know his bonus yet.

Griffith - 2 years - $1,175,000 each year, dont know his Bonus yet

Spreadsheet updated.

DEAD CAP SPACE/Misc. $7,272,250

Ouch! Someone please tell me that we will actually be able to use this money next year?!

Minus estimated rookie cap: $4,000,000

TOTAL ESTIMATED CAP SPACE: $5,464,000

So, we still have 5 mil avaliable? Or does that 5 mil include the rookie cap?

Once again, thanks Joe. I apreciate the work put in.

Yes we will be able to use this money next year, but the 7+ mill also includes incentives that were achieved last season which get counted on this seasons cap, so it looks more inflated because of that.

We actually have 9 1/2 mill, but I budgeted for the estimated rookie cap, hence the estimated 5 1/2 mill left to spend on FA's.

The dead money is only for this year. But, if the Cards cut anyone that has a bonus after June 1st, it will create dead money for 2006. Also, if any player that has bonus clauses and actually make them, that money will also be put against 2006 cap.

I guess once June 1st rolls around, we will have to start a 2006 dead pool.

Joe or Steve who are the persons on the list. I know Starks is but who are the rest to make up the 7 million??

It would be cool to see the list and there costs.

First it just isnt dead cap from players who were cut after June 1st last year and guys cut or traded this year so far, it is also an estimate ( a worse case scenerio estimate at that) of incentives and bonuses that were reached by players during the season, that sort of info is rarely released so it is hard to figure out, so I just did an estimate based on the cap info the Cards released on how much they had to spend on FA's.

Anyways Here are the players that were cut after june 1st and the guys we have cut this year or traded, I dont have their costs anymore though, I get rid of past spreadsheets when I make the new ones, thats my mistake and I will keep them for next year for if anyone has any questions again about it.

Fisher, Dexter Jackson, Bell, Bush, Lucas, Tanner, Dennis Johnson, Pete Kendall, Starks, Shaun King, Karl Williams, those are the bigger ones but there are a few smaller ones that are slipping my mind right now.

I have changed the Deadcap/Misc amount becuase I included a 2 mill. buffer for incentives or bonuses that were earned that we just dont know about or could ever find out about. I was being on the side of caution and putting a worst case scenerio cap number.

But I found an article taht made me change my mind and here is just the part that applies to our cap but read the whole thing about a loop hole that Minny has taken advantage of and a look at some bargian RFA.

http://nfl.com/news/story/8279387

This year, only 12 teams took a hit against the salary cap for incentives earned from the 2004 season. The Steelers won 15 games and took the biggest shot to the cap with $5.4 million in charges -- that's the price of winning, I suppose. Meanwhile, three teams (Buffalo, Arizona and Cincinnati) had no ill effects from bonuses earned that had not counted during the season, effectively giving them a "balanced budget."

So I took away 2 mill buffer I was using from the deadcap/misc fund. and added it back to the cap space left fund.

Thanks Joeshmo, I had read that article and thought that what Ant had said earlier was wrong. And that would have made our cap for the insentives less. Good work as always.

What Min used in 2004 to create $7M of extra cap space in 2005 was called the "Philly Loophole" as they were the 1st team that popularized it. Orignally when that loophole was first published, I thought the NFL would clamp down on it and review contracts extras that exist only to move money to future years. But, with 17 teams now taking advantage of the loophole it must be considered part of the salary cap game. I mean, one RFA type low paid player has a likely-to-be-earned incentive of $7M. If that doesn't standout, nothing will.

The last 2 years, the Cards could have used this loophole but didn't. At least they did rework some deals to more bonus into current years to same some money for this year.

I really wish we would have done a better job over the last two years with the loophole, but oh well. We could have enough cap space right now for James, Hartwell, and Boldin. Were we 9+ million under last year and another 8-9 the year before if I am not mistaken ??

Two years ago the remaining cap space was used to extent LJ and Raynoch and to remove some future bonuses on Leonard Davis' contract. They tried the same this october, but failed because the couldn't reach an agreement with Wilson and because the NFL annulled both Zellner and Hambrick's contracts.

I don't think the Cards will sign all three. I hope they sign Boldin and either James or Hartwell to a reasonable contract. There are still 200+ FAs left still and I think many of them can improve this team. It would be nice to pick up 2-3 tier two guys -- like Rick DeMulling or Chris Hovan or Renaldo Hill.

Here's a pretty good breakdown of the FAs and who's still available.

Steve,

Do happen to know if the signing bonuses for Hambrick, Zellner and Griffith have been released yet. If they have do you know the amounts?

Would be greatly appreciated.

Cardinals | Hambrick Contract Breakdown - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 15 Mar 2005 12:02:15 -0800

Updating previous reports, the two-year deal RB Troy Hambrick signed with the Arizona Cardinals has base salaries of $540,000 (2005) and $800,000 (2006).

Wasn't Hambrick's contract reported to be a two-year $1.6M deal. that would make his SB $260,000

I know the base salaries, but have never seen the total amount of the contract. Do you happen to have a link of were it was mentioned or did you here it on the radio or something. Not that I dont believe you just want to be sure before I add it to the spreadsheet. It sounds about right though.
