I'd rather see us trade out of the first round completely than take a QB that early. And I don't want to see us trade out of the first round. Just say no to Geno and company.

Steve

That's kind of my lean right now too. I just haven't seen Geno enough to have an opinion but the little I have seen screams system QB to me.

He does have a pretty throwing motion but it seems awfully slow on the release and he seems to never look off his target. Just seemed like in college his target was open alot.

But I admit I haven't seen much of him

None to bright? Where is that coming from? Spread QB's seem to be doing just fine in the NFL.

Coming from the same type of sources that say he has "a great head on his shoulders"

It is what I have read/heard about the guy, so take for what it is worth, just as any source.

Not high on the kid at all, JMHO.

Right. Same guys who said Leinart was NFL ready.

Questioned all the sources you want to justify your position on the topic, but it is a lame tactic and proves nothing. I don't know when it started on this board, but it is LAME ARSE.

I am not going to defend where and what information I get unless you are prepared to do the same.

It is just spinning wheels for the sake of it.

I don't like the guy at the seventh pick and you do. Great. end of story, IMO.

I am interested enough to read the thread, thus my mind is not made up.

I wasn't too high on Dion Jordan 2 weeks ago, but the more I read, and learn the more he seems like a good player to me.

Those are negatives I have seen as well. Kiper also said he loses accuracy from time to time.

Not mad in the least. I am not the one who brought up the topic, just responding to it. Guess it is how I type or something.......

BTW - is that how you spell looeez ?

The #1 concern with Geno Smith is can he translate to the NFL, and much like a college DE whom has to learn to play OLB, a spread QB has to do much of the same. Any questioning in intelligence or the ability to read defenses is a big red flag for those types of QB.

Not to mention he is not getting past the Raiders.

As stated above, I would not be particularly happy with him as the pick at #7, but I would certainly not be spitting mad.

I'd be happier with Smith at #7 then I was with last year's horrible 1st round pick to say the least.

If throwing for a 71% completion rate is his "losing accuracy from time to time," I can live with that.

I guess.

When most of your passes are 5 yard, quick throws to a predesignated receiver that accuracy is a little bloated in regards to what he will be asked to do in the NFL.

do u have some sort of graph or statistic that proves "most" of his passes were inside 5 yards? you admitted earlier you dont know much about him?

1. KC - Luke Joeckel

2. JAX - Gus Bradley recently supported his QB by saying Gabbert would be the #1 QB in this draft. Likely pick is a defensive player

3. OAK - Carson Palmer will reportedly restructure his contract with Pryor being their QB of the future. Likely pick a DL

4. PHI - Vick has been restructured and Foles will be given the chance to compete for the starting job. Likely guess would be OT or CB (Milliner)

5. DET - Already have a franchise QB

6. CLE - Weeden had a decent second half of the season but was reportedly on the trade block. Probably the most likely landing spot for Geno to the first 6 picks ahead of us

If he drops to #7...?

Oakland is insane if they believe Pryor is their QOF. Palmer is a never was who is a has been. Then again Oakland, unless they change their ways, makes very strange picks.

Cleveland should take him.

Arizona should be so lucky.

Buffalo will if he drops

He could fall down to the Jets and they would be doing the happy dance.

He averaged 8.12 YPA. Luck averaged 8.7 YPA. Not a lot of difference there.

NFL.com compared him to Aaron Brooks. they also said he got progressively worse as the season went on and tended to lock onto guys, sort of sounds like they were saying defenses adjusted and he got confused and just locked on expecting the guy to be wide open like he was the first 5 games.

Totally different offenses though. Stanford ran a running offense with very little speed at WR and most of the throws were to TE's. WVU runs a spread with very good speed all over the field.

The future of the NFL seems to be going in that direction. Spreading it out. RBs are not a premium. Evolve or die.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel asked personnel executives from five teams to evaluate prospects at the combine. Here's what 2 had to say about Geno, which gives you a nice divergence of opinion.

"He'd be the only (quarterback) I'd consider," one scout said. "He's really poised. Really good vision. He's not one of those system guys who just chucks it to the first guy. He can see the field and read defenses. He's athletic. He's gotten a lot better, too, and should get a lot better in the pros."

Another scout compared him to Akili Smith, a draft bust from 1999. "That will end the conservation," that scout said.

Opinions vary but Mayock & Kiper both have him rated a 20-32 guy. #7 overall is a reach (IMO), but he won't be there at #38 overall.

Nope.

Just the usual spread offense that I watch in college but Sanders struck that down anyway.

I certainly don't know much about Geno Smith. Saw him play in a whopping 2 games last year, and he ran what I deem is "a standard college spread offense" as far as I saw. Again, JMHO.

Very true. It will be very interesting to see how that works going forward.

Just for shizz and giggles, the West Coast Offense requires 65% + completion avg. So does the new NFL Spread. I believe he is athletic enough to run the "pistol".

Eugene Smith was recruited, as a high schooler and offered by

Alabama
West Virginia
Boston College
Clemson
LSU
Michigan
South Florida

At the time it was rumored that WVU paid the most. Hard to believe they outpaid Alabama so it must be false.

I would suggest that the knock on "all" QBs is that they do not go through progressions and lock on, which in most part is because very few if any college defenses use sophisticated NFL packages. They usually don't have to go past the 2nd read. I watched many of his games, being on the East Coast and also a Dana Halgorsen fan, and Eugene Smith looked very sophisticated in that system. Not a dink and dunk or a chucker.

Agereed.

I think he could run the pistol.....I just don't think Arians will run it, LOL.

Not saying he is right in that mindset, either, but Arians came out and said he will not run an offense that will put the QB in harms way.

Why do people hope he DROPS to us? He more likely has to elevate his draft status 10-20 spots to even be considered at 7.

Stat don't always tell the story. I've said all along that the guy Smith reminds me of is Tim Couch and his style offense they ran at Kentucky. I hope the Cards don't amke the same mistake.

This excerpt is from Couch's wikipedia page:

Couch's career totals at Kentucky included completing 795 of 1,184 passes (.671 completion rate) for 8,435 yards (including 4,275 passing yards during the 1998 season alone) and 74 touchdowns (including a 97-yard touchdown pass to Craig Yeast against Florida on September 26, 1998). Couch still holds the NCAA record for completion percentage in one game (minimum of 40 completions) at 83.0% vs. Vanderbilt (44 of 53) in 1998 and for completions per game (36.4, 400 in 11 games) that same season. He also left Kentucky holding NCAA records for most completions in a season (400 in 1998), most completions in a two-year period (763 in 1997-1998), most completions per game in a two-year period (34.7, 1997–1998) and career completion percentage (67.1%). His 1998 records of 4,151 offensive yards in a season, 377.4 offensive yards per game and 4,275 passing yards, stood as Southeastern Conference records for years after his departure.
