Big deal for Josh Allen. Six years, $258 million, $150 million guaranteed. Kyler will probably get that or more. Seems like it's the norm for these rookie deals to get extended as soon as possible. Gonna have to start drafting better, because we won't have much left for FAs.

Quarterback salaries are deep into ridiculous territory.

4 years ago the highest paid QB was on $24,000,000 and the salary cap was $155,000,000. So 15.5%.

Its now $182,000,000 and the highest paid QB is on nearly double 5 years ago at $45 mil. Nearly 25% on 1 player.

Even if it was a normal cap year say at $200,000,000 it would still be 22.5%.

Its getting out of hand. Yes, QBs are important but they always have been.

I don't even think he needs to make the jump. If he replicates last season alone, his camp will be in position to ask for the extension.
This, because finding just a good franchise QB alone is a difficult task. Kyler will get paid by the Cards

Another reason our retention of KK and Keim this offseason was so egregious. Wasting the final stages of low-cap hit of the rookie deal is just dumb.

His camp will ask for an extension next season regardless.
The Ringer NFL show didn’t have Kyler in their Top 10 QBs and didn’t even think about including him (his name specifically came up at the end). If Kyler can’t lead the Cards anywhere this season, it’s speculative to think he could lead them anywhere ever.

Somewhat unrelated, but glad Benjamin Solak left The Draft Network. Extremely obnoxious.

Changing coaches as he enters his third year would have been even worse in taking advantage of a young QB entering his third year were familiarity is key :)

Except i would trade Kyler and 2 1st rounders for Josh right now and the Bills would just laugh. Im not saying Kyler is not good, but he is not Josh good yet.

There should be a rule that a cap hit for a player can be no more than 15-20% of the cap. All they are doing is taking $ from other players and putting the team in a hole to put pieces around them

there is no cap or limiting of potential of someone's financial earnings nor should their be.

If that's what the market dictates let them get their money

Does anyone know of a 1st rd QB in recent history who played out his rookie contract, including the fifth year option without being extended until after the fifth year?

Except it's artificial. It's driven primarily in recent years by disproportionate emphasis on the quarterback, driven primarily by Mahomes mania. Just 2 seasons ago there was 1 QB on $30m per year. Last year there were only 2. Russ Wilson and Dak on $31m per year. Next year there will be 9 over $30m and 4 over $40m. That's nut's. Were seeing full 50% rises in QB salaries over 2 years.

Russ Wilson is a great example. Coming off 2 super bowls and being one of the best in the league he signed a new deal in 2015 for $22m per year. That deal kicked in for the 2016 season when the cap was $155m, so even in year one he was only eating up 14% of the cap. His 2020 deal pays him $35m per year which was 17.6% (more this year with the reduced cap). Still comparatively good because when Wilson signed for $35m he didn't know things were going to get stupid. But why is Wilson suddenly worth 3.6% more of the cap? He's not got better, he was great then and he's great now. There aren't less QB's around, if anything there are more QB's who could start in the league now than ever.

The point is going to come where it ruins the league. It can't not. There's only so much money to go around and the time will come when other players get to a a new deal and there's nothing in the pot. It will tear locker rooms apart. Literally every time a QB signs some huge new deal it's taking money away from another player with a contract coming up. When that was a QB going from $20m to $25 mil it was no big deal, but it's not that any more.

Josh Allen is not worth $43m after 1 decent year. That absolute bananas.

He had a nice year no doubt, certainly comparatively. But then he also had a good OC and they gave him Stefon Diggs, Cole Beasley and drafted Gabriel Davis. It's funny how QB's perform better when they have better receivers. How long until receivers start asking for $30m+ because of that? If you're Stefon Diggs why wouldn't you say "I make your $43m quarterback look good, without me he's crap. Pay up".

Lotta whining about other peoples’ money. The market could re-adjust; the rookie QB contract is still the most valuable in sports. Some team is going to figure out that a mobile QB could be a pretty fungible asset and just cycle through them every four years.

some team is going to figure out that they could build a really good roster around a jimmy G level player on a $25 million salary. That’s basically what the Titans are doing now.

These massive QB deals are undergirded by the assumption that new broadcasting deals will kick in over the next four years and reset the cap market.

Where's the line where you say "I'm not paying you that much of the cap and I'm happy to move on if you want".

There comes a point where it just makes more sense to punt on the draft right? Say Kyler has another promising but not great year. He's statistically solid at 4000/28/12 and 700 running but that special something that drags teams over the line just isn't there. He want's $40+ mil in line with Allen.

What makes more sense? Tying up that much of the cap for 4-5 years on a guy that's maybe had 1 playoff game? Or trading him and using that pick and a bunch more to move up and grab the next "sure thing" in the draft?
