“In Oakland, we had a dumb defensive coordinator and in Arizona, we had a dumb defensive coordinator,” Woodley said. “It was just two dumb guys. They thought we were like Madden players. They’d draw something up and on paper it looked good, but the players still have to go out there and run it. Those guys didn’t really listen to their players. They wanted to do it their way and their way only.”

Woodley blamed Bettcher for the Cardinals' 49-15 loss to the Panthers in the NFC title game.

Woodley was on injured reserve and didn’t play in the game.

“In Arizona, we had one of the best defenses,” he said. “You look at the results that happened in the Carolina game. It wasn’t because we had bad players. No, our defensive coordinator he didn’t have the common sense to talk to his players to make the adjustments. Because he just wanted to do things his way those are the results we got, bottom line.”

Rips two different DCs after two crap seasons.

Methinks the DCs arent the problem.

Except that you can't argue with the results of the Carolina game.

BOTH offense and defense were BAD in that game, but I think the offense was 'badder'.

They were equally inept I'd say. So bad it felt like the 'Same Ol' Cards.' Sad because this organization has tried hard to shed that moniker.

It wasn't just the Carolina game. I think there were instances throughout the year where people were questioning his adjustments and ability. I hope he has taken everything from that first year and used it to better himself. A young D coordinator should be listening to experience, whether it be coaches or players.

Maybe, but as a leader you can't take your direction from everybody under your authority who thinks they know best (especially if the person is an agitator) or you will lose all respect and spin your wheels. Don't know if Woodley is that agitator, but based on his comments he doesn't sound like the kind of guy I would entrust that way. You seek out specific input from people you trust.

Bettcher struggled with in game adjustments all year...that isn't new information. What becomes an issue is if he is not willing to change or listen to his players. We haven't seen enough to determine if that is the case or not, but that is the only worry about a young coordinator.

Didn't we have a top 5 defense and go 13-3? Yeah horrible. For some reason there are people on this board that just love to blame Betcher for everything it just got ridiculous last year at points.

The Carolina was bad everything the whole team came apart.

The thread is about Woodley and how he feels about Bettcher. Why take it so personally?

Lamar Woodley is a guy that probably thought he should have seen the field far more than he did, and if he earned the playing time he would have gotten it. Sour grapes.

Pent up season long frustration, even though he didn't play vs the panthers

That would explain the arguments on the side lines.

Good point. I think Bettcher did a very good job last year but is was a rookie DC and it showed at times. I believe with a year under his belt and now a legit pass rush so he doesn't have to expose the D with an inordinate # of blitzes.

I also think that Woodley is a washed up tool that is blaming others for his inability to play at a decent level.

Except that you can't argue with the results of the Carolina game.

By that logic, Bruce Arians and Harold Goodwin should also be called out by former players because the offensive gameplan was pretty repugnant, as well. However, the rest of the season tells a different story about Bettcher.

I think Bettcher gets way too much flack on this board. Dude had a defense ranked 5th in YPGA and 7th in PPGA with marginal talent at linebacker. To put that in perspective, in 2013, Bowles's first season as DC with the team, his defense was 6th in YPGA and 7th in PPGA. And you can argue Bowles had much more talent on that defense with Dansby, Washington, and Abraham at linebacker.

If Woodley has a problem, he needs to look in the mirror, particularly if he's calling out two different DCs in one breath. Woodley was merely a body out on the field and virtually useless.

...and that logic is still sound. The entire coaching staff deserves criticism for how that Carolina game went down. That was the most ill-prepared team I have seen under Arians and I expected much, MUCH more with a Super Bowl berth on the line. You can be happy about our season and still be sad and frustrated how it ended.

I don't mind some sour grapes, as long as it has validity. That game did.

What does that mean exactly? Does he agree with his comments or not?
