I don't think Kyler considers his completion percentage in the moment, but I feel it is something he has been concerned/protected about since he came into the league. He has never thrown the ball away both in the pocket or outside of it. He takes losses behind the LOS instead of just tossing it out of bounds. Somehow he has been coached/taught to not throw the ball away which the only reason not to is to preserve your comp%.
Is that really the only reason? What if when you go to throw it away you get hit by a defender you lost track of and it leads to a turnover? It's not about his completion percentage, but protecting the ball and at times to the team's detriment.

This could be accurate, but I have never known any coach to coach this behavior. Inside the pocket, potentially yes, but outside the pocket and heading to the sideline...never.

I agree with this. He seems very mindful of them. I think there is a reason he takes a sack instead of throwing the ball away. Two reasons actually. It doesn't hurt his completion % and it increases his pressure rates.

This is honestly hilarious.

It's not about "legacy" it's about stat-padding for the next contract/so he can point the finger elsewhere.

This may be the funniest stan post I've read this season. Well done!

Pardon my ignorance, what does stan post mean exactly?

I could be completely wrong, but when I hear this I always think of the eminem song "Stan", which he raps about this crazy fan named Stan.

Stan is eminem's self-proclaimed "biggest fan" and so fanatically devoted to the rapper that he eventually kills himself just because eminem didn't write back to him in time after Stan reached out to him a couple of times.

So then, fans of players who are over-devoted to the player are therefore referred to as "Stans".

I'm old AF though so I'm probably incorrect.

You guys are beyond help.

The 4d chess you guys go through to discredit a good player is hilarious.

“He plays it safe so he can’t be blamed.”

Who knew K1 was that deep as a villain.

Lotta excuses being made for pocket Kirk Cousins. Throwing short of the sticks on first down, taking sacks/running OOB behind the LOS instead of throwing it away… what are the alternate explanations for these behaviors?

All you offer is head-shaking denial.

He’s right it’s not some 4D chess to get a contract in 2-3 years. Not like NFL GM’s and scouts simply look at ESPN player profile stats to make decisions on quarterbacks.

I personally think it’s a physical thing. His arm doesn’t have the same zip it did a few years ago and so his confidence is lacking.

The turns this thread has taken in 2.5 weeks are crazy.

I don't know which side is right, although I lean toward Kyler not being the main issue, but I do know that all of this losing is taking a serious toll on us as fans.

For clarity sake: Kyler is one of 5 players in the NFL thus far whose average throw goes past the sticks.

His AYTS (Air Yards to the Sticks : This measures average distance past or behind the sticks all throws are) is .2 yards (averaging .2 yards past the sticks).

The only players in the league higher are: Richardson (3.2), Lawrence (1.8), Purdy (1.7) and Love (.9)

Just want to make sure we’re using appropriate critiques (of which there are many).

Basically the fact that Kyler is:

5th in Average Intended Air Yards
6th in Aggressiveness %
5th in Air Yards to Sticks
3rd Lowest Target Separation
4th in Deep Ball Attempted %
6th in Tight Window Attempts %

All lead me to believe that he is not playing to pad his passing percentage stats.

Would be open to changing my opinion if there's any concrete evidence showing an opposing view as opposed to 'feels' and 'vibes' that he his.

Additional stats obtained here:

We’re still in small sample size area here; Kyler is 21st in passing attempts this season despite our struggles to succeed against the scoreboard.

I’m on my phone; maybe I’ll dig into this deeper when I can see all the stats and explanations. Maybe you’re right and he’s changed and he’s actually a top passer in the NfL it’s just we can’t score points because of witchcraft. I’m sure there are also more secular explanations like explosive plays are down across the NFl but we’re only focused on Kyler.

The DVOA boys used to post a stat called ALEX—Air yards LEss eXpected. It tracked third down throws in relation to the sticks only. Kyler has 23 third down attempts this season; he has been success on them.

It’s a long year

Completely agree the sample size is small. I also don’t want it to be misconstrued that I think he’s a top passer. None of those stats account for outcomes either. I’m not saying he’s been successful.

My only assertion is that I strongly disagree with the sentiment that he’s been playing safe in order to protect his % stats. Since it seems he’s actually been aggressive.

Again, extremely small sample size, but check his splits on third and 6+ this year and tell me he’s being aggressive.

Kyler’s consistently come up short in the clutch his whole career here. Front runner and compiler, not a winner.

I don’t have the splits. Link?

Ive already given 7 different stats showing the opposite in terms of aggressiveness against his peers.

I have no response to your second paragraph. It’s a complete tangent to the point I, very clearly, was trying to make. Not going to play against the whole switch-a-roo argument tactic, which is frustratingly prevalent on this board, when I was responding to the notion that Kyler was intentionally padding his completion %.

Can’t find a specific split with 6+ (guessing it’s bad or you wouldn’t have brought it up) but found his 3rd down stats with differing splits (125 Passer Rating Overall)

Overall:
17/23 181 YRDS 2 TD 0 INT

3rd + 1-3:
2/4 13 YRDS 0 TD 0 INT 2 First Downs

3rd + 4-7:
10/11 136 YRDS 2 TD 0 INT 8 First Downs

3rd + 8+:
5/8 32 YRDS 0 TD 0 INT 0 First Downs

So bad on 3rd and long. Elite on 3rd and manageable.

Is that what I’m to be taking away here?

Edit: Sorry forgot to give stat link

Edit 2: I did what I said I wasn’t going to do and got side-tracked into an argument for the sake of it aside from my original point.

I’m not arguing Kyler has been good or whatever on 3rd downs.

He’s most certainly not playing to “preserve his stats”
