    Hanna

My two movie-going friends and I saw it today -- now we're all females, but we like action-suspense flicks. We thought this was an entertaining flick and kept the tension up pretty well throughout -- could have used a bit tighter editing through the middle. A few sections were 'coming of...

Paleo Diet: Eat like a predator, not like prey.

This is like the Zone diet mega-simplified and written with a -- gasp -- sense of humor. I buy it about 75%, which is pretty good. Decades ago I discovered that the single best thing I could do for myself was to eat a chunk of protein to start the day. Long before Zone diet or Adkins or...

    Kindle

No headaches at all -- and because of the ability to increase font size, much less eye fatigue for my also aging eyes than paperback books. I also have the 'kindle for pc' software, so I keep my own back-up library.

    83rd Annual Oscars

The King's Speech was an old-style movie, so I was surprised it won, but it really was a beautifully done film -- well-written, brilliantly acted by pretty much everyone -- Colin Firth has been a favorite of mine since his mere character-actor days -- very subtly directed (which is increasingly...

    Kindle

OK, I did find myself fuming a bit at my kindle this past weekend. I was trying to do an exercise involving analyzing plot development in several books I like to see similarities, and not being able to put simple stickies on paper pages was a pain; also, some books do the chapter-jumps and there...

    Credit Card Security Breaches

LVG and conrad, thanks -- that's very sensible info, esp conrad's caution about screwing up my credit. I will work over my computer, change passwords, and notify the other major card I use, and look into the credit/identity monitoring thing -- I think CapOne offers one at a fee, and their fraud...

    Credit Card Security Breaches

About a 4-5 weeks ago I was contacted by Capital One to verify some purchases on my CC. They're slick the way they do it, run a bunch of innocuous ones by you and then slip in the "WTF!?!" one -- I apologized for being so snotty while they asked me about the normal ones (I mean, if they don't...

    Kindle

OK, I was one of those, but have had a kindle for about 4 months and I LUV it. It's a simple, plain-old reading experience! I am reading MORE than before- and not like I ever hesitated to buy books. I... I almost prefer the kindle experience. I never lose my place! Picture books, things like...

    D-Backs sign Micah Owings

You know what I think? If Upton played for any other team, he'd blossom into a stud, if not a true superstar. It's not Upton - it's the organization.

    Opal Apple

Anybody had one of these babies? Big deep golden yellow with a copper-pink blush... I thought they were just fancified Golden Delicious, but in fact they are a cross of GD with Topaz apple, been in the works for 12 years and just commercially released last year. Plant patent means very...

    White Collar (USA)

I am SO happy WC is back on with new episodes again. No question -- much as I like some other shows, this is definitely my favorite series anywhere on TV.

    The Ghost Writer

Had its moments, but I thought it dragged terribly, and was predictable, or maybe telegraphed too much.

    The Vampire Diaries (CW)

OK, glad to see my newest guilty pleasure has a few other adult fans. I watched a rerun a few weeks ago when I came down with a now-going-on-3-weeks chest cold and couldn't get myself off the couch, and then taped and watched a couple episodes, and now... am 100% hooked. The last vampire stuff I...

    10 Westerns you shouldn't miss!

I'd drop DwW into the 10-20 list for sure; didn't see tAoJJ. I'd have to have Tombstone, Unforgiven, Magnificent Seven on my top ten list. And although it wasn't a movie, the miniseries Lonesome Dove is my #1 all-time top Western.

    Black Swan

You hate All That Jazz?! One of my top all-time movies. But anyway, yeah, the blurring and reversal of dreams/reality, the self-destructive obsession with perfection, the inability to connect with or trust a single soul -- made me also think of Juliet of the Spirits.

    Black Swan

Really an outstanding movie, intelligent, and quite a ride. Everyone was excellent, film is visually compelling, very well-paced. It's a dark film psychologically, but I didn't find it depressing or bleak in the slightest. Reminded me just a little bit of Fellini, or maybe All That Jazz in...

    Official Arizona Weather Thread

Been snowing off and on here at Dynamite/Scottsdale area since late morning. Sticks for a couple minutes, but not cold enough to let it accumulate - my porch thermometer says 38 degrees. We had 2" rain in the past 24 hours -- imagine if that had been snow! I covered all my veggies under a...

    Kindle or IPad?

Really? I've had no problem with my leather cover, and love the protection it offers. I'll have to check this out. BTW, I adore my kindle.

    The Tourist

Never been to Venice, but its on my todo list. I adored Florence and was very taken with several smaller cities like Arezzo and Sienna. Rome was too much in too short a time and I was coming down w/a cold, but I'd like to have time to explore. But...how's the flick?

    Documentaries

I almost never go to big-film documentaries anymore, because I don't like the smug or self-important message-shoving they often seem to have. On the other hand, I'm surprised how much I like some of the lesser-known documentaries when I watch them on TV later on. Last night I watched one that...

    Red

OK, finally saw it, and enjoyed it enormously. Heck --worth going just to see Helen Mirren with an Uzi. Her performance made the movie, in fact.

    Best Pumpkin Muffin

Yep, which is why I was going to say probably Starbuck's pumpkin cream cheese muffins. Their Zucchini Walnut muffins are my absolute favorites, although they are only about 2/3rds the size they were a few years ago.
