It's sad when I'm turning to Mr.ORNG for news. Does anyone know if Gordon has passed his physical so the Suns can make additional moves? This is crazy the Suns have to wait on N.O.

Explain... How does their salaries not equal their cap hold?

It is against the CBA to sign contracts that increase more than 4.5% or 7.5% depending on whether or not it is a team's own FA.

Since the Bulls and Knicks have each players early bird rights and are not under the cap the most they can offer is a contract starting at a little over 5mil. However the Gilbert Arenas provision allows teams who have early bird rights to match any amount those players may receive from another team. When they do match they can still only offer the 5mil on the first year plus a raise on the 2nd year. Since the contract total has to match what the other team offers it is the 3rd year that has a massive increase to account for the difference.

The Rockets offered both players a standard contract that averages to about 8mil per, it's only if the Bulls and Knicks match will it change based on the early bird rights.

He's actually not an unreliable source. He told us about the Gordon thing long before it happened and also about Dragic.

I'm sure there are things in the past that he reported as well but I just never followed him then.

I don't see why they would get rid of it. It allows teams to retain players they otherwise wouldn't be able to. The Knicks and Bulls wouldn't even have the option to match and would have lost the players outright.

Does anyone know if Eric Gordon has taken his physical in New Orleans?

It would be nice to know who is signed with the Suns. For example, I have no idea if newcomers Dragic and Beasley have signed their contract. The same with Scola. I know Marshall has signed. Certainly we know who already is under contract except in cases like Lopez who is a RFA who is presumably exploring offers.

This dragging feet thing seems new under the new CBA when decisions have been made, waiting periods have been completed, yet contracts have not been consummated.

Yeah I don't understand the whole physical thing. What if Gordon fails his physical? Does that mean the match is voided? If it doesn't, then why do the Suns have to wait?

I'm frustrated and perplexed why N.O. did not have to give Gordon a physical before they matched. It seems like if they matched, it should be their problem.

I hope he (Mr. ORNG) is not too accurate. Didn't he tweet that the Suns are offering Brown a 5 year contract?

Under the new CBA each franchise can only hand on one 5 year deal for their roster, the rest max out at 4... its hard to imagine the Suns have pegged Brown as their boy to devote to for the long haul.

Apparently the Hornets are taking their sweet **** time getting the physical done

Right now, if you include all the cap holds, the Suns are right at the cap. Yet they were able to make an amnesty claim on Scola, which is only available to teams under the cap. It is possible the Suns have renounced someone's cap hold without making a press release, but that's unknown at this time. Maybe cap holds don't count on amnesty bids.

Phoenix cannot do anything until Gordon passes his physical in New Orleans. This is one of the reasons Beasley and Dragic have not signed yet. To sign these new players, the Suns will have to get rid of the cap holds on Lopez ($7.2) and Brown ($4.2), not to mention Price and Redd ($0.9 million each) which are taking up about $13 million in cap space.

One way for these cap holds to be erased is if the Suns simply renounce the player's rights. Another is if the player signs a new contract, either with the Suns or another team.

I believe we've already renounced all our cap holds except for Lopez. And it looks likely that the Dragic signing will be announced at 12:30 tomorrow.

I don't get it either as I think Gordon had his physical on Monday per one of my earlier links.

Didn't the Suns get an exception with the Nash trade? Maybe there is some sequential order that needs to be followed to keep it or to sign players without being over the CAP.

This new CBA is a puzzler to me.

Whoever wrote this, this isn't quite right. The Suns were able to create cap space for Scola by immediately amnestying Childress, which is allowed under the rules.

From Salary Cap FAQ:

If necessary, teams can create this cap room by waiving non-guaranteed players, but not by making trades. The team must make the cap room available immediately upon being awarded the amnesty claim.
http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q67

The Suns had about $35M in committed salaries for 6 returning players when Scola was claimed. Add to that cap holds for Lopez ($4M), Marshall, who is now signed ($2M), Gordon's offer sheet ($14M) and cap holds for remaining roster spots ($1.5M) and you are at around $56.5M. When Scola was awarded to the Suns, they immediately waived Childress under the amnesty provision, creating an additional $6.5M in cap space.

Without Gordon on the books, the Suns should have approximately $19M to sign remaining players. After Dragic and Beasley sign, they should have around $4.5M left or $8.5M if they renounce Lopez.

If the Suns don't give out any additional multi-year contracts and barring any trades, they should have around $12.5M to pursue free agents next year, although the two first-round picks will cut into that if the Suns keep them.

As long as the Suns don't dump picks to move salary they might be better off trading the picks for young talent. They are terrible at drafting. Maybe if the Suns get a top three draft pick they can keep it.
