Yes he dismantled a playoff team in the east that had zero upside. Now they have multiple assets and a very bright future. Not to mention two more possibly top-7ish picks in a very strong draft plus Ben Simmons.
I don't know if Embiid will stay healthy but they played it the right way sitting him out and putting him on a minutes restriction this year. If he does stay healthy his ceiling doesn't have a ceiling.
I have no problem with the decision to tank for Philly, I have an issue with the way Hinkie did it. He sold his assets for pennies on the dollar and then he ignored every medical evaluation in hopes of finding gold with Noel and Embiid. Maybe he found it in Embiid, there's no doubt he's special, but I'd hate to have my team's future dependent on him.
And they didn't really have him sit out, he re-broke the same foot even after they'd put in a couple of screws. They had no choice. On top of that he has the spinal issue. Without Embiid, this team has a worse future than the one Hinkie dismantled IMO.
The two picks have a lot of value but I'm not much of a fan of Simmons, we'll have to see what he becomes. We were in much worse shape than Philadelphia when we started our rebuild (following the Scola season) and I'd rather have our assets than what they have unless Embiid has a fairly healthy career and even then I don't give them much of an advantage.
I like Saric, I like the possibility of their 2 picks this season but I don't like their future. Low value picks in Okafor and Noel, neither likely to bring much of a return.
I'd instantly change my position though if they got smart there and found a team that would give them superstar value in an Embiid deal. If for example, LA gave them Ingram and 3 firsts or something like that, they could then re-sign Noel and take their time finding buyers for Okafor and Nerlens. In which case, I'd consider their future pretty bright.
